Outside of a handful of returners, special teams players rarely are stars. But part of Reads job is to instill pride and purpose in the players usually reserves who make up the different units. That builds team-wide buy-in, creates defined roles and turns a player who could walk into a diner unnoticed into an expert at one position.
I love a coach who is serious about special teams, and Riley certainly seems so. The best NFL coaches do. "All three phases" of the game.

Listen to the interview that comes with the article, Read talks about STs as an opportunity to get more guys involved in the team and on the field. Like that mentality also.

(He also mentions the lack of LB depth and how maybe that means you use less LBs on special teams than you'd like).

The immediate improvement on special teams was one of the few things I gave Bo credit for. The year prior, the special teams was a disaster. After one season it was really an entirely different looking group.

I don't think it was anything fancy or overly creative, it was simply an area that needed some attention.

Of course, Pierson El helped make it look even better. Pierson El has a rare talent.

Now combine that young mans talent with a coach whose sole focus is special teams execution, holy moly this should be good to watch.

I'm sure Read is really thankful for Pierson El being on the roster. If not, he will be.

“This guy’s really good,” Riley said. “It’s comforting for me to know that I have one guy that that’s what he’s doing. That’s where he’s spending his energy, his time, his preparation. That’s where his mark on this team is with those special teams.”

I like that BP got involved in ST. I agree with the idea that a head coach who gets involved in coaching ST shows his team that it matters. Urban Meyer helps coach special teams at tOSU. If you just leave it to an assistant and aren't involved as a head coach, that sends a message that they don't matter.
