But, he’s probably going to expect to be the starter. Which means we tell TJ he’s not.

If you can get someone better than what you've got now, you take him every ******* time. If your backup who might become your starter one day doesn't like it and leaves next year, oh well - deal with it if and when it becomes a problem. Don't handicap yourself this year trying to fix something that may not even be a problem next year.

I've been seeing some people (not as much on here) do some WILD mental gymnastics lately trying to make a case that you should deliberately take weaker players for the sake of keeping your backup happy.

It would definitely be preferable to keep him. I wouldn't make too many concessions to keep him, though.
