Portal QBs

Does NDSU's Cole Payton (formerly of Omaha Westside) have a year of eligibility left? Would be a nice band-aid if we could get him.

Oklahoma is a playoff team. Oklahmoa State hired a new coach, and 14 of their 18 commits (including all of the higher-rated ones) are just following their coach. They also have 61 outgoing players in the portal. As far as I can tell, none of USF's commits were starters at their previous schools
I stand by what I said. We needed to start off hot and we started off the opposite of that with embarrassing optics around the program again. Rhule said we have the money to get who we need and we have a GM being paid good money to not blow this. Not saying they won’t turn it around and I hope they do, but losing out on SDSU guys and our top qb pick amongst others wasn’t the hot start Rhule and this fan base needs.

Blame the agent (and maybe our staff for not getting an actual signature) - I think he got $2 million from Kentucky because they whiffed on Leavitt which is double what we were offering. This is bad all around on our part, but it would also be bad to throw $2 million at Minchey IMO. We should not have put all of our eggs in one basket, but we have other needs to address with that money as well. And Kentucky was reportedly offering Leavitt $5-7 million, so they would probably continue to up the bid. For what it's worth, I think it's a mistake on Kentucky's part - maybe Minchey is just incredible, but their roster also has big holes and throwing money at an unproven QB doesn't fix those.

All that being said, our staff has absolutely failed to execute a reasonable plan at the QB spot.
The way I understand it, our staff kept asking for the signed paperwork and he kept delaying it. Also, he never gave our staff a chance to counter offer. Not sure what else our staff could have done.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I have to wonder if they could've read the room better and realized he didn't want to come here and was using us to get a better offer. I don't have a problem with the strategy in general (find a cheaper QB you think you can work with and build the rest of the roster), but it is a bad look when the QB bails and there aren't a lot of great options.

Iowa State better do well. They only had 18 left on their roster. They may have to play D-1 8-man FB next year! 🤣
What is more funny is PSU loading their roster with ISU level players. Remind me again how Iowa St made the playoffs this year. Are they going to magically do better in a tougher conference in Happy Valley.

This sport has become epically stupid.

Your #1 QB option told you he was coming. He even went in the portal saying "don't contact me" because he was coming here. He commits like he said he was going to for a while.

We always knew we wanted to take 2 QBs. So, the staff would start working on a QB that would be willing to come in and be a backup. Tough get in the portal. But, that would probably be someone at a lower level with multiple years available.

Your #1 QB keeps telling you he's sending in the paperwork. He said that as late as yesterday morning.....then he flipped without saying anything.

I put way more blame on Minchey and his agent than I do our staff. Our staff did their work before the portal even opened and went out and got the guy they wanted. Pretty hard when the kid and agent don't have enough respect for others to be honest about what's going on.

I agree with most of your post. I think it would have been bad to toss 2 mil to Minchey and Kentucky is willing to take that risk. With that said, I still have a problem automatically assuming Nebraska and the staff "dropped the ball". Prior to the portal officially opening, we felt good about Minchey. Basically on day day, Minchey agrees in principle to play for Nebraska for 1 mil (assuming reports are correct). At this point Nebraska is in great shape...we didn't overpay for a possible quality kid and NOW we have our guy. I am sure that we have other irons in the fire, but they are probably back up guys. How is it our fault when the agent and kid only committed as a bargaining chip for another program and pulls away without letting us counter? What are the coaches supposed to do???? Not much they can do if someone "breaks" an agreement. Now we will pursue the best guy available that fits our system and wants to play for Nebraska for the $$ we offer.

Until the ink dries the twitter stuff is just rumor. Did the guy actually commit here or just leak twitter rumors to get more money.

I bet some of you guys click on links randomly and think there are actually single women looking for you nearby if you fill in your information in the site.

The internet is a cesspool. Sports rumor clickbait posts can make you mad at coaches when you're not even in the room.

College sports is broken. We now have 18-20 year olds making more with one year contracts than coaches on staffs.

Weird how people want to blame the coach/program/school because a commit had no integrity, within a system that has no rules, borders or limits.

CFB is a joke right now. There’s something very wrong when billionaires can throw bags at 18-22 year olds and that is what influences the sport. I don’t even care anymore. Hope everyone involved loses their a$$ and that Minchey breaks his leg.

I think everyone in college football is getting the same vibe: whether or not you think NIL and the portal is destroying college football, the model as currently rendered is problematic and unsustainable. I don't think it will look like this in 5 years.

I don't know if Chiles is good, but we are blinded by watching him against NU, which was his worst game of the year throwing the ball.

Against Indiana Chiles went 27/33 for 243 yards and 1 TD 0 INT. Rushed 8 times for 48 yards (includes 3 sacks) with a long of 64 yards.

And looking at all of 2025 Chiles had a QBR of 66.9. Dylan was at 62.5. Iamaleava (a favorite of a few vocal people on this board) was at 60.8.
