Prince Amukamara

Yes, and I think I understand what you're saying as well. I'll just counter that Beck was not ready. Tebow had a whole season running it the way he did, and Beck had two games and a 1-of-8 track record. Playing Tebow was the same as playing to win, and playing Beck was not, IMO.

With regard to Prince, I think burning the redshirt was the right thing to do. Get him some experience at the end of this one, and hopefully we'll be seeing him more from now on. Maybe they're bringing him along slowly, rather than throwing him into the fire at DB in a game that very much mattered. Special teams today, tomorrow, the world! Or something. We shall see.

Not sure if you guys are aware but most schools use backups and defensive starters but not freshman for special teams unless the freshman are getting playing time elsewhere.

Special teams is for athletic starters and a reward for players who practice hard but won't see playing time. Like junior walk-ons or 2nd string linebackers/tight ends and receivers.

I guess that means its a reward for freshman that practice hard. :thumbs

Honestly, I don't know why people get so up tight about it. Are they so afraid that we'll won't recruit another player in that position in the next 4 years that you have to tuck them away?
But if a recruit sees how someone at his position is misused then he likely won't come here.

I submit that the misuse of Bobby Newcome by Coach Solich turned many possible recruits off to Nebraska and started the spiral.
Every freshman wants to get on the field. Ask any freshman if they want to redshirt and they will tell you no. Why? Because they want to play.
Dave H, this is scary, we agree on something.

well 10 if we are lucky. I hope you are right about him playing. We just don't see much of it in the past.
I hope so too, but if he's gonna be valuable he's gotta get out there in some capacity. It seems sometimes people, no necessarily you, would rather see someone "burn" a redshirt catching a touchdown pass or something. How reasonable is that?
I agree. The only reason to use a RS is if he can contribute every game with an impact or he can play every game for experience. If a guy plays 3 plays a game because he runs fast and can go deep then that is wasting his redshirt even if he catches a few touchdowns.
So you're almost damned if you do, damned if you don't then right? I mean no one has a crystal ball as to see what he's going to do in the future. So really, how can it be a waste if it's done with good intentions?

Maybe not with Prince particularly, but if you want to provide real competition to a flailing defense don't you have to get some of the younger kids involved? Wouldn't that involve "burning" red shirt seasons?
I think playing during some series that are important but not critical like they used Hule today and Castille are good examples. Then if we are in a blowout game either way they can play more during those times. They just can't play in a 'few games' and special teams. I guarantee we have someone who can do that. It's not burning if you get valuable experience. Beck was an example of 'burning' since it's easy to remember.
This is terrible, I keep watching the replay, and I can't find 'Hule.' Must be a redshirt Senior trying to light the fuse sticking out of his cleats while standing next to the coaches. ;)

I said like "junior walk-ons" Way to add to the post.

You are Foppa must be the same person. His only contribution is that I mis-typed "Helu"

Good luck in life boys.

Beck was a totally different situation. It was at the end of the season and we were in a close game. The coaches thought he would be the best QB to put in to give us a chance to win.

Putting Prince in to play special teams is asinine, unless they are planning on using him a fair amount the rest of the year. If they only use him on special teams for the rest of the year, I'll be a bit pissed.. and I'm sure he will too.
I have to agree...........if your going to use the kid make sure you use him for more things than special teams. I think you saw yesterday though that a lot of guys that don't normally see the field this season were on it!

A player is much better in his 5th year than in his 4th. When you wate a Redshirt so a Kid can play only on Special Teams it doesn't help him as much as having an extra year. I tell all my Kids that go on to play in College to Redshirt unless they are the Starter.
