Freshman QB Tebow shines as perfect fit for Meyer's offense
Freshman Tim Tebow looked like a perfect fit for coach Urban Meyer's spread-option offense.
Tebow completed 15 of 21 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown, seemed more comfortable than starter Chris Leak and led the Orange team to a 24-6 victory over the Blue team in Florida's annual spring game Saturday.
Tebow also gained 2 yards on 11 carries and was sacked three times, but he was handcuffed by a non-contact jersey that allowed the defense to tackle him with a single touch. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound left-hander probably would have racked up big rushing yards if not for the rules, which Meyer implemented during spring practice to keep his only two scholarship quarterbacks safe.
Leak was 17-of-33 passing for 145 yards and an interception for the Blue squad. He ran four times for 9 yards and was sacked once.
Meyer maintained there was no quarterback controversy, but said Tebow can determine how much he plays this fall by how well he performs in practices and games.
"That's a great water-cooler story," Meyer said. "That's a great discussion over coffee in the morning. Chris Leak is our quarterback, and Tim Tebow is going to be a guy that's going to play. We're going to let him grow as a quarterback. There is no quarterback controversy."
Tebow struggled some early in the spring, but looked as confident as ever Saturday in front of 45,000 fans at Florida Field. It started with the "Circle of Life," a pre-game ritual that pits teammates against each other in a battle of strength and toughness. Tebow stepped to the middle of the circle in hopes of competing, but Meyer pulled him back.
"He wanted a little piece of somebody," Meyer said.
It would have been his only contact of the day. Nonetheless, Tebow settled for getting the best of the Blue team on the field.
He completed his first five passes and directed three 11-play drives in the opening half. The first ended with a field goal, the second a punt and the third a 16-yard TD pass to Kenneth Tookes on fourth down. But the touchdown probably should have been disallowed.
Tebow clearly was across the line of scrimmage when he released the ball.
"Did 45,000 [people] see that?" Meyer said. "I think it was fourth down, right? I was looking up at the score and I hadn't seen a score yet. I was worried that 45,000 needed to see a touchdown. I'm glad to see Tim step up and make that play. It was a good play."
Tebow had several other solid passes that weren't debatable.
He hooked up with David Nelson on a screen pass that went for 29 yards in the third quarter, then found Cornelius Ingram for a 16-yard gain that set up DeShawn Wynn's 1-yard TD plunge and pushed the lead to 17-0.
"The more you get a feel for it, the more comfortable you are and the more the game slows down for you," said Tebow, who enrolled in January. "I think that's just kind of how it was."
Leak drove the Blue team 65 yards for a score on the ensuing possession, capped by Anthony Gay's 2-yard TD run.
But Tebow answered, completing a perfect sideline pass to Nelson for 55 yards. Markus Manson scored from 2 yards out to make it 24-6 with a few minutes remaining.
Nelson finished with three catches for 90 yards for the Orange team. Ingram, a former quarterback who has emerged as a play-making receiver, had seven receptions for 58 yards. Manson ran 10 times for 96 yards.
Leak had four of Florida's five starting offensive linemen, but was hindered by dropped passes and little production from the running game. Louis Murphy led the Blue squad with seven catches for 79 yards.
"His side was not making plays," Meyer said.
Thirteen potential starters were held out of the game.
Linebackers Brandon Siler and Earl Everett, receivers Dallas Baker and Jemalle Cornelius, safety Reggie Nelson, cornerback Avery Atkins and defensive lineman Jarvis Moss sat out for precautionary reasons.
Defensive linemen Ray McDonald (knee) and Marcus Thomas (hernia), running back Kestahn Moore (back), receiver Andre Caldwell (leg), guard Jim Tartt (shoulder) and linebacker Jon Demps (knee) missed the game because of injuries.
With so many starters on the sidelines, the focus was clearly on Tebow and Leak.
"Since the first day, coach Meyer said I'm his quarterback," Leak said. "I have all the confidence that this is my team. I'm the captain of this team."
