Rhule finally feels like the "right coach" for Nebraska

Was not. He was a 3.

And Suh was going to be great wherever he was. And you don’t really have any takes to dislike- so there’s that.

If you want to discount what actually occurred and instead opt to lean into something completely unprovable, by all means.

But I'll just make sure you're factually wrong on the one factual claim you made.

One of my potential concerns with Rhule is that he has not stayed in one spot for an extended period, quickly jumping to the next big offer that came his way. While I like to think head coach at DONU is a dream role, it's hard to feel ultra confident that he would be willing to stay should a different opportunity (specifically Penn State) were to be available. Future worry because I think he's going to enjoy this year a lot, but worth noting nonetheless.

Additionally, a more pressing question is whether he can he find a way to sustain success? With Raiola, Holgo, etc. we have a great opportunity for a special few years, but I would like to see us get back to consistency and winning the games against inferior teams more soundly instead of nailbiters against the bad teams.

While I get this, for him to end up at PSU it means

Franklin would have done amazing at PSU and jumped to the pros or maybe some SEC gig?

And

That Matt would have had to had at least a few 10 win/playoff seasons at NU.

Agreed on part 2 for sure which would be great! Franklin was on the hot seat not too long ago. A dud of a season this year puts him right back on it. But totally get your point and makes sense. I'd just like to see some continuity with success and keep a coach for more than 5 years again.

Rhule was a walk-on at Penn State. The kind of guy who sees the field for a few special teams plays, and that's about it. He was there because his parents moved from NY to State College when he was a teen. He's got some affection for Penn State, but I don't know if it's really THAT strong.

Ugh... um, this thread got interesting up there with the Baylor and Temple records wrt Coach Rhule's influence. When I see that I keep finding myself leaning on the "resources" aspect of it here as compared to other schools out there. I trot that out in discussions highlighting shortcomings in a coach who has transplanted from where ever to here. It is obviously a bit naive to do that... for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that they guy is either improving the program he's been invited into or he is not, "resources" be damned.

That long haul legacy thing that we old timers are embedded in coach wise was only two stars: Dr. Tom and the cigar and whiskey guy. They built the program and the expectations. A pick up bed full of subsequent coaches have not been able to keep it up (although we sure argue a lot about what-ifs with Solich and Bo had they stayed on). We've had old timers (Riley), heroes (Frost), work-a-day hard hitters (Pelini), and self-appointed gods (Callahan). Fizzle fizzle.

Your turn, Matt. Good luck.

He really hasn't had enough success here to worry about losing him. I know seven wins felt great to us, but he was only 3-6 in conference last year. It’s hard to imagine PSU being too interested in that. Just to compare, would we have been interested in Frost had he gone 7-6 at UCF?

He has created a ton of positive vibes though. Not sure if that’s a mask or if it’s precluding good things to come.

We sure jumped at Mike Riley after 7-6 and 5-7 years leading up to his hiring... Sometimes college football decisions don't make sense. I agree with you in that MR would have to do more than he has done but if he puts a couple 10 win season together here, guessing he will get plenty of offers. If they win 10 this year, I don't see him leaving simply because the job will get easier the following season since we will retain the majority of the roster. We are officially the youngest roster in the B1G.

To be clear, the only jumping i did with Mike Riley was to google to see who the heck he was. lol.

He met his wife at Penn State, they still have family in the area from what I understand. Often references his time and growth in State College. During interviews over the past few years, he has been especially careful in how he addresses his alma mater. I don't think he's necessarily pining for the role, but if there was one school that concerned me, it would be PSU. A whole lot of 'ifs' would need to happen for that to occur, but it's just something worth considering. Like I said, I hope Rhule sticks around here for a long while as that would presume that we're enjoying sustained success which has been missing for a decade.

It would also be really helpful if we could maintain continuity with the administration and staff. I haven't done a deep dive on many others, but in reviewing the preseason top 10/25, many have kept their coach, AD, and school president for multiple years. While I don't know think there is a direct correlation between a school president or AD and athletic success, having stability within any organization is crucial for maintaining buy-in from the stakeholders.
