Yeah I get the differences - there are probably more of them than similarities, but we naturally tend to draw on shared experiences as humans, and after Franklin got fired and Rhule's name inevitably popped up... it brought back memories of Mike Riley for me. I think it has for several people.
It's about the reaction. Rhule is trending upward but his college resume and NFL stint don't scream next level, which is the message Penn St. is implying. The comparison to Riley isn't because the situations are identical but because both hires would feel underwhelming to a fanbase expecting a leap forward. The disconnect between ambition and the hire is what draws the parallel.
I think Franklin should be happy with his $20k per day severance.Rhule should hire Franklin as an analyst for the rest of the season
Not even close. Rhule would be a much better hire than Mike Riley was to Nebraska.I’m sorry but PSU hiring Rhule would be the equivalent of NU hiring Mike Riley
So who are those guys. @lo country and I thought it would be Chadwell a few years ago but he's not having a very good year this year at Liberty but he was on fire previously at Coastal Carolina. Just about anyone is a roll of the dice because every situation is different. It's time for the next round of elite coaches to be born. Coaching is a young man's game. Technology, NIL, the ability to fundraise and simultaneously recruite while putting forth the right social media image while looking for your next job because you only have 3 years tops to prove your ROI. It's exhausting
Regarding the bold: There AD isn't Steve Peterson by chance?? - Just joking - I know the AD is a friend of Rhule'sRhule would have been offered the job, off the record, already before Franklin was even fired. They likely have some idea who they’ll target. If it’s Rhule, we’ll know pretty soon, he’s not the type of person to flat out lie about something like that on a live press conference. That will be the first question tomorrow
I agree. I didn't intend to imply they'll find someone or aim to find someone with Franklin's accolades or better. That's a huge ask and unrealistic. My point was more about the message Penn St.'s admin is sending and how people may react based on the eventual decision. It has to be a name that fills you with the hope that it can work based on what that person has done, and I think the general consensus among Penn St.'s fandom right now is that they should be aiming for someone perceptibly better than Rhule... and I can't blame them.
Agreed. Part of the reason I find Penn St.'s decision so interesting. I mean, I get it. Three straight losses, two of them against perceptibly bad teams. Plus the James Franklin stereotype that he can't win the big game. It put them in a tough spot administratively. That's fair. But other than Urban Meyer and Nick Saban - and maybe Cignetti - there is basically no one out there that fits that description. *Maybe* Brian Kelly if you squint. I guess technically Kirby Smart but that doesn't even seem like a possibility.
I hate them as a Nebraska fan, but I get their genesis. I think a majority of college football fans and analysts would agree that Penn St. is in a better position to win CFP games and championships than Nebraska right now, and a lot of that is rooted in their success compared to ours in the last decade and their geographic recruiting advantages.I loathe these type of comments from espn and elsewhere, "Rhule, 50, also likes his gig at Nebraska and has lifted the program out of an extended slump. But can he win a national title there? He certainly can at his alma mater." Piss St has TWO titles...Nebraska has FIVE. And if you can win one at a program like Indiana you certainly can at Nebraska. STFU
Agreed, although I wouldn't be surprised if PSU fans are talking themselves into rumors of an Urban Meyer / Saban post-retirement runThe only "gettable" name that would make their fanbase happy is Cignetti.
