Rhule to Penn State?

Brian Hartline.

LSU, Florida, Auburn, and FSU would surely take big proven names. The big proven names would leave a vacuum to be filled by smaller school, big coaches ( Bob Chesney, Jason Candle, Jason Eck)

Huskers get Hartline!

He's done well at OSU. I wonder if he has coat strings to bring some of their players with him??

No. They don't need a builder unless we look at what they may lose to the Portal and in recruits during this time period. The argument probably will be that Rhule is a builder, just think what he can do as a maintainer once he gets all of his chess pieces on the board.

Yeah, the portal will probably be pretty rough on them this year, but I assume they would still have plenty of talent around. As to the second part, if you are PSU can you really fire Franklin to go with a 'just think what he can do' sort of guy? If anything, they may have to settle on Rhule-as others have said there are a lot of big openings this year.

Let's get the drama over.
I agree. But unsure if a contract extension is warranted. I mean we could still go 6-7 on the season….. Maybe the extension comes with some caveats regarding staff changes, NIL, W-L, incentives etc. I like Rhule. Think he’s a great CEO, but if not for the PSU rumors would anyone in their right mind offer a slightly above (for today) .500 coach an extension….. Who hasn’t beat a ranked team yet while at NU. I’d offer him more NIL $ before I’d do an extension.

I understand how the extensions work and all of that. However doesn’t giving MR x amount millions more dollars seem counterproductive to getting more money for NIL?

I'd rather it goes towards the things Rhule said he needs to compete against -NIL, Facilities, - I'll add- better assistant coaches. As you note, he is a great CEO and spokesperson, but man - he's earning millions while still putting an average, at best, team on the field. Why is that coaches aren't forced to earn that extension with improved performance is beyond me. Objectively, the Offense is slightly better and the D is better in the pass game but the run game sucks. The most improved is ST. Make Rhule hire better OL, RB, coaches first. As you note, Rhule still hasn't beaten anyone of note except Cincinnati apparently. Based on recent performances, Cinci would probably win the rematch and outside of the underthrown ball, would have won the first game.

I will add to Rhule's benefit - he has raised the bar on recruiting and I suspect the 2026-27 classes will be very good classes.

The athletic department has money coming out of they eyeballs from B1G TV deals. They can only use a set amount of that in rev share, they can't pay any NIL. So an extra $1M/year for Rhule doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

If you want to lock down a coach, this is the year to do it. We are signaling stability with recruits/transfers when there are so many other big programs in chaos.

And it if doesn't work out, in 2-3 years we pay another buyout and start over. That's the way of college football.

I agree and hope a contract extension doesn't happen mid season. If we can take Rhule at his word, I think that is what he would rather have right now as well - more money to pay players so he can get the best available. Once that happens, it benefits him, and/or the next guy if he eventually moves on.
