Starting job up for grabs as QBs test new offense

There is no way Zac Lee doesn't start this year. He was our starter all last year, gutted it out through injury and crappy line play, and he's got the edge in experience over every other guy on our roster. Double-Dog guaranteed that Lee starts.

Wait... what year is this again?
Zac Lee wasn't a freshman all-american.

Brandon kinnie has come out and said that even as late in the season as the B12 CCG, they were still 'running to spots' instead of adjusting to coverage. Hence the tight coverage on the 4th down play at the end. Watsgrove kept it simple by not allowing for much improvisation, it seemed to me. Beck seems to be saying that he's going to make it simple by calling plays and letting Players make plays instead of the plays making plays.

Adding option routes is actualy pretty simple, we used to run them in HS. If the coverage man is on the left, break right...get it? Practice and chemistry is what it takes. Wastgrove didn't improvise plays and didn't allow his players to improvise. That's why it was all or nothing. Beck sounds like he's teaching a system, in which players are allowed to make things happen even if the defense seems positioned to stop it.

The players seem excited that even if a play breaks down they'll still be able to make something happen, like gee imagine, roll out of the pocket or change a route from a hook to a fly? Wow, great athletes using their ability instead of being handcuffed to the drawing on the paper. It allows them to actually compete every single play. And if u say watsgrove allowed that, go rewatch the Texas or Iowa state games. Our kids were not competing. They were just running plays, many of which weren't executed.

sounds like you're putting a lot of chips on TM, to make the read and the throw....i see a lot of incomplete passes here with receiver and qb on different pages...takes a lot of practice and chemistry as well....we'll see.

Agreed. I'm just saying that no matter how much of a stone-cold lock something seems, it isn't.

I remember when it was first rumoured then announced at gametime that Martinez would be our starter and it's funny looking back on it how surprised I was that Zac Lee wasn't starting and that the all too rare Freshman (redshirt) would be our starter. My gut just tells me that Pelini mostly still wants to hitch his wagon to Martinez. I guess we'll find out but for me at least I truly hope this race is indeed 'open' like the coaches are saying it is.

I want true competition under our new system and certainly when it comes down to crunch time for us next season different results. Whether that's Martinez, Carnes, Turner or Spano time will only tell but I just hope this race truly is any man's at this point.

They're designing the new offense FOR guys like Taylor Martinez, Carnes, Turner. Martinez will thrive.
OK - but those guys have some different skillsets between them.

I'll admit, I have no clue what's going on and it will be interesting to watch.
I think that Herc has hit it on the head.

As for the different skillsets of these QBs, of course each player will have their own individual strengths and weaknesses, but it is up to the coaches to call plays accordingly to take advantage of their respective strengths. Hopefully Beck is able to do that, and God willing, he can do it when his starter gets injured during a game, and the backup has to make plays.

EDIT: I hope that Beck can also ready the backup(s) in case they are needed.

I think it would be really interesting if we went with 2 quarterbacks at times this upcoming season. Maybe there's no chance of it happening at all but your post about different skill sets just got me thinking about the possibility.

Beck seems to be implementing some playground ball into his scheme. The QBs rolling out, looking for receivers and the receivers running option routes and/or anything just to get open. This type of offense is hard to plan against for a defense because everything is spur of the moment and nothing is consistent.

In high school, we played a team that was like this every year. The receivers just ran around and the QB would find them and hit them. Our LBers and CBs were going nuts on trying to stay with them.

Relax compadre's. I know how hugely popular conspiracy rumors are here but......Bo likes to win.

Wow, a rational post!

Totally agree, look I have coached football for 10 years now, I pick my starting 11 on defense since I am the DC. Guess who I pick, THE BEST PLAYERS that will give the team the BEST CHANCE TO WIN.

It is ALWAYS that simple, just like at NU

The only time there is a bit of an emotional edge is during a blow out and then there might be a few kids that are hard workers but not that good and they might get more PT then some kids with more talent.

That's a good point. Everyone was clammoring that Martinez just had to be the starter because he was such a rare talent when really, his blazing speed put him ahead of a pedestrian Zac Lee and Cody Green. That's why I believe it's true when the coaches say it's open, we've gone from a pretty lackluster group of QBs to recruiting some really solid young guys. Martinez probably won't be unseated right away, but I do think the competition heats up a lot in the next 9 months

I hope when they say it's "up for grabs" this season, it isn't the same as when they said it was "up for grabs" last season.

I really dont care how well our QBs run the option. If defenses sell out to stop the option, what do we go to???? By mid season last year the zone read was pretty much stop in its tracks whether Martinez was injured or not. I really want a QB in their that can pass effectively. Not saying throw the ball 50 times a game. But have that TRUE dual threat in the QB position is what gonna keep D-coordinators up at night.

If we arent able to pass the ball effectively, then this season will be just like last year, full of hope... lack of success.

Not trying to pick on you HuskerScott but your post is simply not true.

NU had good to great offenses for decades despite having "very" marginal passing qbs (S. Taylor, S. Frost, T. Frazier, E. Crouch, etc). They were still effective passing the ball only due to the defense selling out vs the run which left our wrs wide open everywhere. NOT because they were good to great pocket qbs. Not even close.

Despite your claims, the vast overwhelming percentage of cfb qbs do not excel (at all) at both throwing and passing. They're almost non-existent. M. Vick maybe? Who else?

NU runs the ball effectively coupled with an OC who won't endless "sling the ball around" on 2nd or 3rd & shorts and the passing game will be wide open. We don't need a D. Marino passing threat to succeed at all.

:yeah

If we establish the run and simplify the passing game (audibles from the sideline, having receivers run option routes, calling simple pass plays like screens and bootlegs), we will have plenty of success throwing the ball no matter who is back there.

Watson wanted robots and not players reacting to the situation. Where did this guy get his degree and who taught him how to coach ?
