tackling

How can a defensive guru put a team on the field that is so poor at tackling?: Do they not start with the fundamentals? Do they not do tackling drills? At times this season our D looks like neighborhood children trying to tackle dad in the backyard. If that's not bad enough it spills over to special teams which are gawd awful on both kickoff and punt coverage. This is just one thing to build on..

I am more upset with the offensive line today. Poor showing against a mediocre defense. Turnovers and dropped passes also killed us. They should have scored two more touchdowns.

Sad but true. It's hard to tackle when you can't get off your block, are being pushed backwards, and also letting the opponent take it to you instead of you taking it to him. David and Dennard are the only guys on defense who can consistently tackle well. We really miss Gomes.

it is hard to block 8 people with 5 lineman...blame the scheme and play calling

I think a lot of college coaches skip the fundamentals because they are more interested in "gee whiz" schemes and doctoral thesis type strategies. The only flaw in this is the bottom line is none of this works if your X can't tackle their O. Same with blocking.

Vince Lombardi would start every season of training camp with the basics, and I means BASICS. How basic? Vince held out a football, and said, "This...is a football..." Then the coaches would go through how to carry it, how to snap it, how to take the snap, and build on the basics. Same with tackling. Same with blocking. Same with running with the ball.

Now, if we have a player who doesn't wrap up, or carries a ball like a loaf of bread, or throws a pass underhanded, "That's just how he does that."

True, but what does it mater when your defense doesn't help you out. Team game folks! this one is on the team as a whole.

Respectful request - can we stop with the defensive guru stuff? We all know Bo is a respected defensive coach, and he has the hardware to prove it, but even the best of coaches have rough years. Urban Meyer, anyone? His last year at Florida wasn't exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread. Today's game is filled with so much parity that all coaches are going to struggle at some point. Why do we have to slight Bo in this way?

Tackling has been an issue all season, especially tackling for losses. Almost every time we have a guy in the backfield, we either take a bad angle at him or we don't wrap him up. We've seen that this coaching staff, mainly the retained coaches, can produce very good tacklers. I thought our '09 and '10 defenses were very good tacklers for the most part. This comes down to the players not getting it and not executing, which will eventually happen with time and experience. In one of our games this year, Carl Pelini could be seen on the sidelines saying "I don't know what to tell you anymore." They're telling the kids what to do and how to do it, and they're not doing it.

Don't forget, though. A defensive line that was going to be a strong suit is suddenly very thin because of injuries (most notably Crick and Rome), our secondary is littered with young guys who have had little experience and we lost good defensive players to the NFL. Every team is going to have a drop off after something like that, especially a team like ours that can't recruit the same kind of kids LSU or Bama can.

I don't think players automatically get better as time goes on. Case in point, has Tiger Woods a better golfer now than he was three years ago?

Tackling will improve when improvements are made, not because time passes.
