The team showed great heart and effort, and very easily could have won this game. I was shocked that they came back after being down 21-0, and it ended up being a great game. The players deserve a lot of credit for playing their hearts out, yet coming up just short.
Thoughts for this team, along with a few disturbing trends:
1) First, when can NU say that this is a “moral victory”??? I damn well guarantee you that not one football player in that locker room who is happy about how this game turned out, nor should they be. This is the freaking Nebraska Cornhuskers, not the Sigh-Clones, we don’t have moral victories, no “good losses,” only wins and losses. Nuff said. You can be proud that the team put out a great effort, but moral victory…..
2) Not playing smart football, from LeKeven trying to play RB, to Taylor darn near fumbling (and throwing) the game away against ISU, to the penalties and mental lapses during earlier games (Pitt for sure) this team doesn’t play smart football, much like the Raiders. Hmmmm…
3) Like I said before, this defensive scheme will never work well against top level teams. cozgroovy has some weird fascination with big LBs (230+) and DEs (270+) which may have worked well in a slower Big 10 conference, but will not work well when they play against teams with speed, Big 12, SEC, ACC, Pac 10, etc. There just are not enough 230 lb LBs who are fast enough to cover RBs or WRs in college football, or 280 lbs pass rushers. NU used to be good with guys like this. They didn’t become GREAT until they started playing smaller, faster LBs (Farley, J Williams, Ortiz, McFarlin, etc) and they had smaller, faster DEs (Alberts, D Jones, Wistrom, etc). They just gave up 400 yds and 34 points to Tech, and that will never bring NU back to the top.
4) The DBs may not have been playing “zone” defense for the most part (per say), but playing 10 yds off the WRs was giving too much cushion for Tech, and it showed. It is pretty similar to playing zone, which has its place, but it didn’t work well, especially early in the game.
5) Its nice to see that finally NU started finishing drives and putting points on the board. That being said, did it really take billy c 16 games to figure out how to use a goal-line offense, and 5 games to figure out to use his “short yardage back” on short yardage situations??? Also, where the hell is the QB sneak when NU needs less than 1 yard???
6) That being said, this offense still has a ways to go. I know that some will not agree and this started being discussed in another thread, but with Taylor playing very Joe Dailey-like, this system is not conducive to college football. Taylor supposedly ran a “very similar” offense in JUCO, yet his first 3 games were awful, he has had 2 huge fumbles in the past 2 games, and his dangerous passes finally caught up to him this week. Yes he has less INTs than JD (which is good) but he also has less TDs, and their yardages and completion % are very similar if you compare the 2 years. And ZT is supposed to be the perfect fit for this offense.
7) Recruiting-I thought that all of the JUCOs brought in last year was a one year deal, just to get NU over the hump. While bringing in a couple of JUCOs a year can be very good, a true national power will not hang their hat on JUCOs to provide their success year after year.
8) This weeks game against Baylor is a true tossup, much like last weeks game was. My heart and head tell me to pick NU, but my gut tells me to pick Baylor. NU hasn’t been on the road this year, and hasn’t played well under billy c. when the have been away. Baylor is a very nice surprise this year too. One thing is for sure, this team seems to be more resilient than last years, and hopefully, one heartbreaking loss won’t destroy their season.
9) And for the “fans”, quit saying, “If it wasn’t for this fumble, if it wasn’t for this penalty, Techs last play was lucky…..” garbage. Tech made the play and won, just like NU did against Pitt and ISU. If you want to take away every mistake and every bad play, then ANY team will never lose. Its football, good plays and bad. Just have to deal with it and come back the next week.
10) Another thing, this staff to too geared towards the NFL, it seems. College football and the NFL are not the same. NFL type players do not always make the best college football players and vice versa. I think that this staff has failed to realize this.
