Tech afterthought

The team showed great heart and effort, and very easily could have won this game. I was shocked that they came back after being down 21-0, and it ended up being a great game. The players deserve a lot of credit for playing their hearts out, yet coming up just short.

Thoughts for this team, along with a few disturbing trends:

1) First, when can NU say that this is a “moral victory”??? I damn well guarantee you that not one football player in that locker room who is happy about how this game turned out, nor should they be. This is the freaking Nebraska Cornhuskers, not the Sigh-Clones, we don’t have moral victories, no “good losses,” only wins and losses. Nuff said. You can be proud that the team put out a great effort, but moral victory…..

2) Not playing smart football, from LeKeven trying to play RB, to Taylor darn near fumbling (and throwing) the game away against ISU, to the penalties and mental lapses during earlier games (Pitt for sure) this team doesn’t play smart football, much like the Raiders. Hmmmm…

3) Like I said before, this defensive scheme will never work well against top level teams. cozgroovy has some weird fascination with big LBs (230+) and DEs (270+) which may have worked well in a slower Big 10 conference, but will not work well when they play against teams with speed, Big 12, SEC, ACC, Pac 10, etc. There just are not enough 230 lb LBs who are fast enough to cover RBs or WRs in college football, or 280 lbs pass rushers. NU used to be good with guys like this. They didn’t become GREAT until they started playing smaller, faster LBs (Farley, J Williams, Ortiz, McFarlin, etc) and they had smaller, faster DEs (Alberts, D Jones, Wistrom, etc). They just gave up 400 yds and 34 points to Tech, and that will never bring NU back to the top.

4) The DBs may not have been playing “zone” defense for the most part (per say), but playing 10 yds off the WRs was giving too much cushion for Tech, and it showed. It is pretty similar to playing zone, which has its place, but it didn’t work well, especially early in the game.

5) Its nice to see that finally NU started finishing drives and putting points on the board. That being said, did it really take billy c 16 games to figure out how to use a goal-line offense, and 5 games to figure out to use his “short yardage back” on short yardage situations??? Also, where the hell is the QB sneak when NU needs less than 1 yard???

6) That being said, this offense still has a ways to go. I know that some will not agree and this started being discussed in another thread, but with Taylor playing very Joe Dailey-like, this system is not conducive to college football. Taylor supposedly ran a “very similar” offense in JUCO, yet his first 3 games were awful, he has had 2 huge fumbles in the past 2 games, and his dangerous passes finally caught up to him this week. Yes he has less INTs than JD (which is good) but he also has less TDs, and their yardages and completion % are very similar if you compare the 2 years. And ZT is supposed to be the perfect fit for this offense.

7) Recruiting-I thought that all of the JUCOs brought in last year was a one year deal, just to get NU over the hump. While bringing in a couple of JUCOs a year can be very good, a true national power will not hang their hat on JUCOs to provide their success year after year.

8) This weeks game against Baylor is a true tossup, much like last weeks game was. My heart and head tell me to pick NU, but my gut tells me to pick Baylor. NU hasn’t been on the road this year, and hasn’t played well under billy c. when the have been away. Baylor is a very nice surprise this year too. One thing is for sure, this team seems to be more resilient than last years, and hopefully, one heartbreaking loss won’t destroy their season.

9) And for the “fans”, quit saying, “If it wasn’t for this fumble, if it wasn’t for this penalty, Techs last play was lucky…..” garbage. Tech made the play and won, just like NU did against Pitt and ISU. If you want to take away every mistake and every bad play, then ANY team will never lose. Its football, good plays and bad. Just have to deal with it and come back the next week.

10) Another thing, this staff to too geared towards the NFL, it seems. College football and the NFL are not the same. NFL type players do not always make the best college football players and vice versa. I think that this staff has failed to realize this.

Shenannigans.

Tech was absolutely stifled after the last half the second quarter. Yea, we should have changed to the 3-4 sooner. I'll give you that, but the rest of it, sorry bud.

Oh and space that stuff out man. I went crosseyed at least three times trying to read all that.

Did they use it at all against Tech, because I remember seeing 3 LBs in there most of the game. Yeah, I dont care for the bend but dont break, because at some point, its gonna break.

Actually, I was never a big fan of Pelini's schemes, either. I thought that with the zone defenses he used, and the types of blitzes he ran, it reminded me of the 80's Husker D's, different formations and plays, but kind of sit in a zone and react. They didnt seem to attack like the great Ds of the 90's. But he did get pretty decent results in 03, and the kids like to play for him, so I had to kind of bit my tounge about it.

Better than Cosgrove?

It's so cliche, but you don't stop TT, weather might be able to, but you only hope to contain them..

Did we let up any big plays? No I know that had to be a goal.

FF makes some great observations and valid points, but IMO saying something like"well it looks like BC finally figured out that.." or "when will he realize that..." is pretty arrogant on the part of those saying it. The man's been a part of every level of football, his entire staff has more years coaching football than many of us probably have watching it.

For us to say we know what he should do and wait for him to realize it is pretty arrogant. I'm as guilty as anyone of second guessing the coaches and players, but when they make any kind of decision I really believe that they're not just flipping a coin or being stubborn. Whatever the down and distance is, the plays being called are being called for a reason. We're not in practice and we don't know how the players on the field have executed during the week. Play calling is a lot more complicated in real life than it is on playstation so saying we should just run qb sneaks or an iso in goal line or short yardage is oversimplifying the game and overestimating our intellingence. If we really knew that much then why aren't we all coaches?

One of the worst posts i have seen from former in a a while. First of all, name me a team, any team, that has "stopped" tech. Not even the national championship sooners could dominate the game defensively. All you can do is let them rack up their yards, create a few turnovers, and stop them in the redzone when the field shrinks. We accomplished two of the three. Second of all, the offense has gotten signifacantly better than in the begginning of the year, and remember, Everyone has a year's worth of film to look at now. Last year, no one had any film. Callahan continues to slip in more wrinkles, and most of them work, from the fake to Glenn up the middle toss to Lucky on the outside to the numerous crossing routes we have been using to free guys up in man coverage, it is obvious that Callahan is learning and progressing, even as Taylor has as a quarterback, and the defense has as a unit with heart. You are willing to give all of the blame to Cally and the coaching staff when the team gives up last year in TT, and none of the praise when they go down 21 to the same team, and fight back only to be robbed by one man's momentary lack of sanity. Yes, you can put this game on one play when the play is so outstandingly stupid that it can be compared to a Leon Lett play. You cant coach that, and you dont even think to remind someone, because it's like telling someone to put on a uniform before a game. You intercept the ball with little time left on the clock when your up, you fall down. I dont care if your Deion fricken Sanders, you fall down. Period. As far as your obsession with weight, who has more sacks? This year's team or the much "smaller, faster" team of 03? Who had our sacks on Saturday? Moore (270 lbs), Carriker (280 lbs), Ruud (230lbs). Who leads the team and is up there nationally in sacks? Carriker. The reason that we were able to get away with smaller defenses in the past is that we had great corners and could blitz 7 or 8 on every play, not to mention NFL calliber rush ends and linebackers. Once again, we have 2 of the 3. I disagree with you post in the strongest terms.

Just when you think something positive is coming, he ALWAYS manages to throw in a backhanded insult and negative against the team. I won't even try decoding this garbage post because it's a waste of time. I believe everyone has already made it clear to Formerfan that his negativity towards the huskers after this game has shown his true colors and made him arrogant. This guy continues to live in the past and is stuck in a time warp that is never ending.

Stick to your sooner boomer team former and let us deal with our own teams problems.

Again thank you for the comments related to the loss, it is nice to know there are Husker fans who still understand that loosing is NOT OK.

FF is still pulling your chains! When will you guys realize he isn't serious and is just messing with you?
Nobody takes this much time and thought to screw around with you. At least anyone normal. He's legit with his denouncement of the staff. He is going to pick at everything, but makes some valid points... :thumbs <_< :smokin :bounce :box :rollin :clap :wasted :bat :sarcasm :yeah :dumdum dedhoarse :bang
