Turner Gill

Gill is sure to get a warm reception when he starts coming up to Lincoln, but have him start winning a few in a row, and I'm sure everyone's tune will quickly sour.

who the heck is Turner Gill? :bat

;)
Our next head coach
I hope not! I like winning.
Once Bo leaves for Ohio State after winning 2 titles here, Gill will be our head coach, and a damn good one.
Well, we will soon see. I have nothing against Gill as a player, I just don't like him as a coach. I'm bet'n the Big 12 ain't so nice to him.
His first year or two will probably be a little rough. But, Gill knows what it takes to win b/c he's been a winner his entire career as a player & coach. I expect Kansas to be a solid contender in the North division in about 3 maybe 4 years.

Listen, i have nothing against Gill. Infact I wish KU would have hired someone a little easier to hate. But I have to go with dizzturbed on this one. The guy was not knocking your socks off at Buffalo. Granted thats not exactly the powerhouse of MAC schools. But its not like his is now at the powerhouse of BIG12 schools either folks. Turner went 2-10, 5-7, 8-6 & 5-7. 20-30 in 4 years. And lets not overlook the miricle 8-6 season. you say "fro, what do you mean miricle season??!! Gill is a great coach and that was all his work."

To that I say Gill is a deeply religious man, because someone was on Buffalo's side that year.

-2nd win of the year. 30-28 vs. Temple. Bulls get the ball with :38 left when Temple kicks off. Bulls drive and throw a Hail Mary as time expires and IT WORKS. Buffalo wins

-3rd win. 27-24 Army. Down 2 Td's in the 4th, the Bills take advantage of a couple of drive killing fumbles to tie the game and send it to OT where they win

-6th win. 43-40 4OT game over Akron

-7th win. 40-34 Bowling Green. Buffalo come back from down 20 in the 4th to win in double OT

-8th win. And who can forget the shocking win over underfeated Ball State for the MAC Championship. 42-24. Remember how Ball state was ready to put the game away and then on two consecutive drives fumbled inside the Buffalo redzone and the Bulls returned them both for TD's. Ball state went on to fumble 3 more times resulting to 2 more Buffalo scores. FWI Ball state had 4 fumbles on the season before having 5 in one game.

In other words 5 or those 8 wins were of the pretty exciting, evertything had to go right type of win. To get 5 of those in one season is pretty unreal. Thus a Miricle year. That team just just have easily won 5 games and Turner would still be at Buffalo. Good coached teams catch breaks. But not all of them.

FWI also, the combined record of the teams that Buffalo beat that year - 42-56. Take Ball State out and its 30-54.

In other words I would not be surprised that if in 4-5 years, Gill is leaving KU with a .500 or worse record overall. And well below .500 in confernce play

you also failed to mention that the MAC fell off as a whole by quite a bit during Gills time at Buffalo. That MAC was a differnt conference in the early 2000's. Yes he did nicely but the dude still won 5 games a year in the Mac against WEAK competition. No matter how you sugar coat it

So fro, you're telling me you wouldn't want Gill to take the reigns over Pinkel at this point in time? I mean it sounds like you really love this guy.

Sidebar - Not that this matter too much, but TO was this close to giving Gill the job over Pelini a couple years ago. He maybe wouldn't have saved the Huskers as quickly as Pelini, but he would've gotten the job done.

I have no issues with Gill. I just think alot of people are giving way to much credit to a coach that hasnt done much of anything. Maybe I am exposed to way to much love based on where I live, but it seems like its just some think it a given that KU will now challange for the North every year. I thought everyone here thought Mangino was a great coach. He challanged once and his best ever was 2nd best in the division. Gill has one heck of a job ahead of him. Look at it this way. In football KU is no Missouri. And Missouri is no Nebraska. Ku's program is maybe 5th best in this division. Their fan support is posibly the worst, right along with Colorado. They are playing from behind the 8 ball in so many areas. I am just saying that IMO its not going to be any better than it ever was with Mangino and I seriously doubt they ever get another 1 year wonder like they did in 07. And just so we are clear. I thought Mangino was a hell of a coach. I just think KU might win 6-7 games each year. I dont see them being a challenger for anything other than 3 or 4th place

If Gill really catches fire and does some great things I will be more than happy to eat my words. (because I am man like that. Not because one ounce of my soul will be happy for KU. ;) ) But if he is average at best, you know who you heard it from.

I agree with you for the most part, fro. I think Gill did some 'good not great' things at Buffalo, but I also think that his potential has earned him the right to get a head coaching job at a bigger division 1 school. With better talent, I think he could be a good coach but I don't think he's going to consistently challenge for a North title. 7-8 wins is about what I expect from him each year. Because honestly, Missouri and Nebraska have won the last four Big 12 North titles. I see no reason that any other Big 12 school is even close to getting a North title.

But who really knows how this might turn out? Who would have thought that Dan Hawkins would suck so bad going from Boise State to Colorado? Sometimes, good coaches at lower levels turn out to be busts at higher levels, while average coaches at lower levels turn out to be great coaches at higher levels. It will be interesting to see what Gill can do, as long as he does it while still losing to Nebraska. :koolaid2:

I gotta agree with Fro on this one. Gill did have a miracle season, and how did he follow it up? He went 5-7. If you really get down to the brass tax of it all and compare what Gill did at Buffalo to what Solich has done at Ohio, it becomes clear that Solich has done a better job. I don't see anyone beating down his door to become their next coach. Then, you combine this with the fact that KU will never be totally behind him. KU has been and will always be a basketball school. They can't even muster up a fraction of the money they're trying to get to do their stadium expansion. I don't think it really would have mattered who they brought in as their coach because the next football coach at KU was doomed from the word go. I wish him all the luck, but I just don't see KU as being a contender anytime soon in the North.

I agree with you both for the most part, fro pretty much completely. I just have a couple of things to say to Enhance. I think one of Hawkins mistakes was recruiting his son, and I think KSU could be a north challenger.
