Turner Gill

Jayhawk: Where's your posts Dude? Please chime in.

I for one think the Gill hire is intriguing. He has brought in a real-good coaching staff, and I expect him to recruit well in Texas. Keep in mind that he was coaching perhaps the worst program in the universe, and probably had an ultra difficult time recruiting players there. So it's possible he did about as well as any coach could do there.

Bill Snyder took over a KState team that WAS labelled the worst in D1. By his fifth year, he was 9-2-1 and finished the season ranked in the top 20. Gill is no Snyder, and he's coaching at a school that barely even cares about its football program. Kansas can whine and complain all they want about the Gill hire, but they were not ever going to get a top notch coach to come in there.

TRAITOR - and he should be treated as such. I don't blame him for capitalizing on opportunity, but this is FOOTBALL. This ain't a tea party or class reunion so there's no reason to sugar-coat and pretend that everyone's friends when they take the field.

Let's repay KU for that whooping from 2 years back in Lawrence EVERY time we play Turner. Worst decision he's EVER made...

In the Big 12 North starting this year there is NU! And everyone else fighting for 2nd. Mark it.

Wasn't Gill considered one of our best recruiters?

I think he'll do much better than Manginer on motivational aspects alone..(The players going through brick walls thing).

It will be interesting to see how well he recruits his home state.

I will admit I don't know much about Buffalo, but I suspect that KSU has a much nicer stadium (I've seen it) than what BU has. And KSU facilities likely have been much better than what Buffalo's ever had. And the MAC is barely Division I. Buffalo is the bottom of the pit. There can't be a worst job. It's way too soon to judge whether Gill is as good or not as good as Bill Snyder. Wait four or five years. So respectfully you might be comparing apples to oranges.

Yes, the Saturdays we play KU will be war. But otherwise, I don't consider Gill a traitor -- I respectfully don't agree with nillie. Be happy for him that he landed a coaching job in a major conference at a school that made it to a BCS bowl just few years ago. KU made it to the top 10 in 1995 and even in 1968. I see this as a decent job. KU has shown a lot more in football than NU has ever shown in men's basketball.

The last time Nebraska's men's basketball team won the Big 8 tournament was when? The last time KU won any kind of conference title in football was when? In 1994, NU's mens basketball team won the Big 8 tournament getting an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In 1968, KU tied for the conference title in football. People can crow all they want about KU's season in 2007, but the fact still remains that they didn't play either Texas or Oklahoma and didn't even win the North. Why the BCS picked them over Mizzou is still a mystery. Were you ever at Bill Snyder stadium in 1988? It paled in comparison to what it is now. It didn't even have lights until 1983.

Gill is going to be able to recruit to KU better than anyone probably ever has. He has surrounded himself with some decent assistants and received his tutelage from possibly the greatest football teacher ever (T.O.). I don't see how KU doesn't improve in it's near future. I'm not expecting NCs, but I believe they will constantly be a contender in the North. The previous posters are correct that when Coach Pelini(s) bolt for their respective "dream job(s)", Gill will be right in line to take over and will coach Nebraska throughout the rest of his career. Hopefully, he will receive kind treatment and will want to come back to Nebraska in the next 5-10 years.

once a husker always a husker. he will always be welcomed here, but his team wont be. i live in kansas and i dont think kansas fans realize it yet in what they are getting in gill. he screams the nebraska tradition by the way he carries himself on and off the feild. mangino on the other hand was a good in game coach but was not liked well by his players. hated by the media and by the end of last year the fans started to really see what he was made up of. gill is twice the man mangino is, was, and ever will be.(insert your fat joke here)
I know an active Jayhawk alum and he doesn't seem too thrilled about Turner's hire. I just remind him it was BUFFALO.

There's no doubt Gill & his new staff will bring in some great recruits in the years to come. He was always strong in that area as an assistant under TO, and now he has another strong recruiter in OC Chuck Long (see: Sooners, Oklahoma circa 2000), who has solid recruiting ties across Big 12 country. IMO Long is Gill's best hire (DC Carl Torbush a close 2nd) because of his recruiting & his experience as a successful OC with the Sooners, plus he has head coaching experience (San Diego St) that will definitely benefit the players' development in this program.

Obviously it's hard to see exactly where Kansas football will be in the future. But, they have the kind of coaching staff that can produce solid teams every year. Honestly I think 3 years from now the Jayhawks will be the consistent runner up to Nebraska & a great rival that could give us quite a bit of trouble.

Btw, I think Gill has done everything right so far as KU's HC, including his emphasis on team.

Can we please get all these Pelini threads combined into one, it's junkin up the board.
Seems to me this is a Turner Gill thread. If we lump every thread that mentions BP or CP together we will have one huge thread that is second only to 'Last Post Wins.'

So fro, you're telling me you wouldn't want Gill to take the reigns over Pinkel at this point in time? I mean it sounds like you really love this guy.

Sidebar - Not that this matter too much, but TO was this close to giving Gill the job over Pelini a couple years ago. He maybe wouldn't have saved the Huskers as quickly as Pelini, but he would've gotten the job done.
I have no issues with Gill. I just think alot of people are giving way to much credit to a coach that hasnt done much of anything. Maybe I am exposed to way to much love based on where I live, but it seems like its just some think it a given that KU will now challange for the North every year. I thought everyone here thought Mangino was a great coach. He challanged once and his best ever was 2nd best in the division. Gill has one heck of a job ahead of him. Look at it this way. In football KU is no Missouri. And Missouri is no Nebraska. Ku's program is maybe 5th best in this division. Their fan support is posibly the worst, right along with Colorado. They are playing from behind the 8 ball in so many areas. I am just saying that IMO its not going to be any better than it ever was with Mangino and I seriously doubt they ever get another 1 year wonder like they did in 07. And just so we are clear. I thought Mangino was a hell of a coach. I just think KU might win 6-7 games each year. I dont see them being a challenger for anything other than 3 or 4th place

If Gill really catches fire and does some great things I will be more than happy to eat my words. (because I am man like that. Not because one ounce of my soul will be happy for KU. ;) ) But if he is average at best, you know who you heard it from.
I have to agree with you 'fro.' Kansas has been and always will be a basketball school. Man-g did a great ob with what he had. I think Gill can possibly br as good but with all the basketball tradition at Kansas I don't think he will get a lot of help from the administration. His record there will probably not be indicative of his skill as a head coach.

Pretty strong words 'nillie.' How do you see Gill as a traitor? The people who have a right to be unhappy are the people at UaB. They are the one's he left and he had a great following there. Gill made a career decission and in his place I'd bet you would have done the same. He and TO have remained close over the years and I would also bet that TO advised him to take the job.
