Watson haters.......Cool down and lets remember some things

Here's the thing . . . you don't give passes to someone who has had the reins of the offense for years. I did the same thing with Callahan. I made excuses . . . said the talent isn't there, etc. etc. The reality of the situation is you either get it done or you do not get it done. Watson is not getting it done. Time to clean house on the offensive side of the ball. No excuses.

I don't know what needs to be done with the OC position. BUT - there are plenty of other teams in the Big 12 that could probably complain about not having "the talent" on offense. Yet, those teams find a way to score (and not just fieldgoals either). You cannot tell me that Baylor, Kansas State, and Iowa State have more gifted athletes in their programs than we do. Nothing against those programs, each one of them put up more than a fight against us this year and Iowa State put us in our place. The numbers do not lie:

Baylor is the only school below us two very significant statistical categories. No dout had Griffin not been injured this season they would have taken us in that category too. By the way, these numbers count all the fun we had pushing around the Sun Belt teams.

This is only the 3rd year he's been the OC for the Huskers. Prior to 07, BC called all the plays. Watson was just OC by way of a title.

I know. That's why I only give him half credit for last years relative success on offense. Those players were products of Callahan's offense, which (sadly) is better than Watson's.

So Im gona piss some fans off here but

Im sick of the constant attacks on Watson,

First of all do we remember how it was our offense last year that carried us?

second do we remember how Saban (yes the coach who managed to take the Crimson tide back to the promise land in just 3 years) went directly after Watson for his offensive coordinator and offered double his salary.

third, Tom Osborne recommended to Pelini to keep only Watson and Gilmore from the Callahan coaching staff

fourth, Osborne and Pelini have both been nothing but supportive and encouraging of Watson

and fifth he can recruit (and if we do get rid of him there goes Gabbert, and maybe our hopes for Andrew Green next year)

Our two biggest problems this year were depth at the offensive line and experience and depth at the Quarterback position.

Lee would probably not have been the starter if Witt never transfered, and Green would have recieved a red shirt. Were forgetting how hard it is to start as a freshman, especially for an offense whose play book is about a half a foot thick.

People have forgotten how much depth we have lost at the QB position this year, Witt transfered, Spano was sidelined to ACL problems and that left us with a QB who only had 2 pass attempts all of last season, a QB fresh outa highschool, and LB converted to QB because we were so lacking in depth and he played the position in highschool.

Throw on top of that a battered offensive line (Burkes was a huge loss) of Callahan's last and lowly rated recruits, who give our QBs little protection, and you have a major problem.

People seem to be forgetting how our offensive line has been the root of most of our offensive failure. Helu has been battered from the process (and also probably because we over rode him), Lee (who can't make decent decisions to begin with) has no time, and our backs have no holes. We are such a one dimensional offense it ridiculous!

But Cotton is already bringing in the big boys, we have Arod coming this next year and Moore the year after that

So don't do for Watson's throat just yet, give him another year or 2 before we do anything, this year was a hard deck to play with.

If we continually suck on offense the next few years, the Il change my mind

Watson's career average when he is in charge, now posted for the third time:

Average Total Offense: 62nd, 374 ypg

Average Scoring Offense: 59th, 27.2 ppg

There are 120 FBS teams, Watson has consistently been middle of the road with above that level talent.

I'm sorry, your argument no longer holds water with me. Carlfense makes a good point, and these numbers back it up. 2007 was Callahan calling plays and his players, 2008 was Callahan's players and offense modified.

Is this output what you're willing to put up with at Nebraska? As Carlfense pointed out: Did we have the worst players in the Big 12? No. That falls on the coaches.

We're at a crossroads, and the program cannot afford to be taking even one step back, let alone so many that it kept us from a BCS bowl, a possible national championship game appearance, and a return to the national conversation. I am fully on board with sh#t canning Watson after a little research I did, the other stats in this tread, and these two quotes.

It is time we start thinking about being Nebraska again, not how to get back to it.

I don't think opening up the offense would have gotten us ANY more yards per game. If anything, power running was the only aspect that worked. I understand exactly what you are trying to say . . . but I can't agree with it. Do you think opening up the offense against Texas would have gotten us more yards? All it would have gotten us is about 5 more turnovers.

What? Can you get into a little more detail on how opening up our offense, passing more and averaging 60 yards more per game equates to another four losses?

Because I agree that the way we utilized our O got us this record - three losses by a combined four points, and another loss where a competent O might have been able to keep up with Tech.

Yep. 5 more turnovers and a couple fluky completions. Also, we would have had the pleasure of racking up yardage underneath in the 4th quarter as the game entered garbage time. I think we would have seen garbage time yardage accumulation in more than just one game, too.

knapplc, if we shut down our O against Iowa State, we win that game handily.

If we don't use our gameplan, no way we even hang with Oklahoma. KU, KSU, CU, all of them aren't gimmies. OK, 4 may have been an exaggeration, but it's a random speculatory number anyway. In any case, the point is Watson's gameplan for most of this season has directly resulted in two things: low yardage, and wins.

You are assuming that some other offensive scheme would have given us more yardage as well as the wins. With this team? I don't believe that at all.

Points scored per game certainly does. Most generally yards equal points.
