What Did We Learn - Bowl Edition

Back to back bowls
2 7 win seasons
Fired some guys and hired some guys
Allegedly have money to now be competitive in the NIL space
Watched a lot of football this season like most of y'all and we are a long ways off (or $28 million roster) from being competitive
Simply put, a season that showed a revolving door of issues and concerns.

AA was a huge bright spot
Pay Ekeler. Dude earned his money and then some.

Hoping we crush the portal.

Sad but true. I haven’t seen any of the coaches in the playoffs wearing their hat backwards.

Can we please quit blaming stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with anything? There is plenty to complain about without making stuff up.

Snow made a comment in a presser about needing Rhule to "put his hat backwards" and coach the DL. So Rhule did just that. The players were probably eating that up for the last two weeks. It wasn't him trying to make a fashion statement.

If Rhule wore a suit and tie, we still lose, and everyone complains he looks silly all dressed up.

Oregon has a freshmen running back scoring and a freshman DB with 2 ints and a fumble recovery. Whatever we end up doing, recruiting or portal, there needs to be instant production.

The type of players we need have been training in offseason camps for 10+ years and playing for high school teams that mimic Junior colleges. There are no freshmen anymore.

Oregon shows you can do a lot with great D play. Their Offense didn't light up their game but they'll win with 16 points. Miami beat A&M with D.

Yep.

I saw a problem also with our intensity level on defense this season. For me that starts with coaching.

We took a big hit on intensity level after White left.

The hat is just another symbol of a program that worries about everything but football.

And then puts a team on the field that cant tackle. Its in the name of the activity....tackle football.

At some point it seems like the kids could do better by themselves - after school sandlot style without any coaches mucking them up.

I feel bad for the new staff hires. Maybe they can mutiny, and get control of this drifting ship.

For me, I don't feel like Nebraska can fire Rhule, because they extended him. They aren't going to pay him $60 million to walk away after next season. The disappointing thing about Nebraska Football isn't just how they play now - they have regressed each and every season under Rhule, ending as a much worse team than they started - but the obvious reality that this isn't going to work and we have to suffer through at least two more seasons of this. That's on the AD for extending a coach before the games got difficult.

I am glad that Nebraska has taken advantage of easier schedules and they successfully dodged Tennessee because they're scared to play teams with a pulse - look what happens when they do - but they can't dodge conference games. They are in for a humbling experience next season unless they dramatically upgrade the roster while simultaneously finding new identities on both offense and defense.

There are so many issues with the Matt Rhule experiment at Nebraska that it's hard to list them, but the most glaring is player development which was supposed to be his entire schtick. Instead, he's recruited around 70 high school football players and a whopping 5 or 6 have become acceptable contributors. That's abysmal.
Please, please begin to understand that contract extensions like this are standard and required. It’s not a misstep, it’s just the cost of the big business cfb has become.

The program costs of not extending a coach can be just as detrimental, if not moreso, than the back end $$ to buyout a contract. The only people that don’t understand this are the ones who have prematurely decided a coaching change is required. Once again, hindsight is wonderful. Hiring the absolute right guy to get us to the promised land is the only way to avoid a big buyout when things don’t work out. Don’t extend a coach before you know he isn’t the right guy and he won’t be here to prove he was the right guy. Wouldn’t it be extremely easy if we only knew the future. It’s only somebody else’s money ffs.

All of which has exactly zero to do with actually winning football games.

Like I said, there's plenty to complain about that actually does have something to do with winning games. Trying to make such a big deal of all that other stuff is just looking for things to complain about.

I don't think it was as simple as that. Dannen extended Rhule in part because of him being one of the prime candidates to take the Penn State job. That's where Dannen got played, presumably by Rhule's agent. Who floated the idea of Rhule taking the vacancy in Happy Valley? The national media and Rhule's agent. I seriously doubt Rhule was ever in the running for the job. And what if he indeed left and took the Penn State job? I actually think he would have done us a massive favor, given his record here and the recent firings in the coaching staff. Plus, Penn State would have had to pay us a massive buyout.
