What Did We Learn - Bowl Edition

I mean .... I don't think Rhule was Penn State's first choice.

But they ended up hiring a mediocre coach from Iowa State. Let's not act like it was completely out of the realm of possibilities that they were at least somewhat interested in Rhule.
Matt Campbell is ten times the coach Matt Rhule is. Not saying Penn state struck gold but Matt campbell’s Iowa state would torch Rhule’s huskers any day of the week.

The guy that is 10 times the coach that Rhule is has won nine games twice in three times as many years in a weaker conference.

Cool story.

i am learning there is a large group of husker fans actually cheering for the huskers to lose a lot next year so matt Rhule can be fired. and here i am hoping he and his new assistants can turn things around. what a poor fan i am for hoping things improve.
next year’s schedule will be brutal I don’t think Rhule needs any of us cheering for him to be fired he’ll get that done all on his own. He’s had 3yrs to build a roster and develop talent to fill in as players leave but here we sit going into year 4 and he has to overhaul at a minimum 2/3 of the defense and 1/2 the offense it’s almost like a rebuild again so forgive me if I’m pessimistic he can do it when he failed miserably the first time around.

One of those teams in that weaker conference you mention embarrassed us last night. Keep convincing yourself that Rhule will turn things around. It is always fun watching you be wrong. Actually, that has been the one fun thing this season for me.

But who? We are the most failed school at hiring coaches in the last 22 years. The most failed school in hiring football coaches. Even as a fan base I think our expectations are somewhat ridiculous thinking we can fire another guy and "hire" the right guy next time. We have not hired the right guy yet. The question is " why can't we attract that right guy to come here and coach"? At this point, its a program failure from top to bottom. Said this when Alberts left for Texas A/M, this might be the hardest job in America right now and even he knew right away that Rhule was not the guy. He left before he was fired and took the money, which no one can really blame him for. Trev realized he couldn't get the guy he wanted, and settled for Rhule. So what is missing? Money? Recruiting base? Big 10 conference? Take tradition out of this and were bottom of the Big 10 pack on the field. Alabama thinks it failed hiring Deboer, but they have won 9 and 11 games in two years.

It's easier to convince yourself that I'm wrong all the time when you make up stuff that I say. Such as where I've said that Rhule will turn things around.

My off-season grocery list.

OC, done with DH. We ran the ball well using a quick count. It worked. We stop doing it. Our dropback pass game is crap. HH was wasted as a talent. Actually, all of our TE's were as the season went on.

I hope the new coaches turn around our D. Our DL have super lazy hands. Size isn't nearly the problem as technique. I got to coach with a high-level DL coach who has coached at every level, including the NFL. I learned from him how significant the use of hands is; we don't use them.

A defense that actually wants turnovers.

TACKLING!

S&C, is it better?

NIL additions that are thought out, and use the money well.

Just will throw out 2 wins vs Top 25 teams against 16 wins vs Top 25
1-2 head to head

So does one also disqualify two of the three seasons Rhule led teams to at least 9 wins since they came in the American Conference, or is the American not weaker than the Big XII?????/

So if he's beating all those Top 25 teams but not getting a lot of wins overall, he must be losing to more than his share of bad teams.

1-2 head to head

Campbell beat Rhule the first two years after Rhule took over a program coming off the closest thing to the death penalty. Doesn't seem like that much of an apples-to-apples comparision.

I was comparing Campbell's nine seasons at Iowa State to Rhule's three here. I never said anything about Rhule's wins at other places.

It's weird how Holgerson gets no credit for Emmett Johnson's meteoric rise. He never had a single 100+ yard game until Holgerson started calling plays.

Since then he's had 9 100+ games, 3 150+ games and a 200+ game.

It's pretty funny it took hiring an "air raid" coach to finally get anything out of our running game.

PaulCrewe, if I learned something over the years is that arguing with Mavric is like arguing with your wife, you can never win because it is always your fault and you are wrong. So, I do what I do with my wife, make my point and then let him have the last word. He is incapable of admitting fault…just like a wife.

I hate Iowa State with a passion but you're wrong about Campbell being a mediocre coach. Ames is one of the hardest places in the country to recruit players and win at. What he did with that doormat of a program is nothing short of miraculous. I'm not saying he is necessarily going to be better than James Franklin but he could coach/develop circles around Matt Rhule.

Rhule’s contract extension would have felt REALLY painful if he wouldn’t have made the firings that he did.

We’re basically rebuilding the program without the extreme turmoil of firing the head coach.

Rob Aurich has an incredibly difficult task ahead of him. But if he somehow succeeds, we could take the next step, which would be to start getting nine win seasons.

Then after reaching that milestone, the next one is getting to the 10 win mark.

Several people in the thread are acting like we’re just going to fire Rhule and then land the next Curt Cignetti and be in the playoff in two years. It’s not going to happen.
