What Did We Learn? - Michigan

Pretty clear the majority on this board are incapable of taking off the scarlet shaded glasses. Moral victories abound here and many casuals here wanna just selectively overlook the fact we got punched in the mouth at home to a 2nd tier, at best, big ten team this year.
If Michigan gets past USC, they will likely be a playoff team, despite being in that second tier you mentioned.

Maybe I’m reading the board differently, but I think most agree that we did not perform well in several key areas. We are not an elite team at this point. However, we do have some bright spots and should learn a lot from yesterday. Not many teams on our schedule have a front seven comparable to Michigan. If we can clean up the obvious issues, we should be in a good position come November.

Was more so referencing all the posters portraying Dylan R as having the ability to walk on water. Glossing over his meh first quarter that led to us being down 10 and playing catch up the entire game and rather highlighting the yardage and stats.

I feel deflated after yesterday. We upgraded the WR room and OL- both groups looked horrendous yesterday. We knew Michigan was going to be heavy run yet somehow appeared surprised and in very bad positions run defense wise.

Many of the issues I highlighted above were present against Cincinnati. Our offensive drives stalled and we couldn’t stop a thing on the ground. Not feeling too great about the next 2 months when we show up rather flat at our conference home opener on national tv.

I haven’t really posted in this thread because I was so disgusted and disappointed with Saturday. So disappointing that both our lines got manhandled so badly.

But, after over a day of thinking about it, nobody predicted us to go undefeated this year. And, it’s possible Michigan’s OL and DL are the best we see all year.

Other that RB, we were equal or better than Michigan at about every other position. I friggen hate it that we lost this game and this is not a moral victory. But, I’m still looking forward to the rest of the year.

It’s just so damn frustrating that we are still struggling so much in the trenches.

You do realize the first drive of the game happened in the first quarter don’t you?

We upgraded the WR room and OL- both groups looked horrendous yesterday.
How specifically did the WR room look “horrendous”?

I agree we need some bigger backs. Dowdell was a thumper in short yardage. Unsure how much KY paid and if we even countered. Ives is the biggest we have at 215 then Mozee at 210 (biggest who have gotten touches). EJ is listed as 200lbs. Some of the freshman appear to be bigger. Several times this year we have been denied points because of an inability to get those tough yards. I'm a run the damn ball guy. Number of attempts doesn't necessarily mean "committed" to the run. I think after sacks we had 47 total yards....That's not going to cut it.
Ives runs like a baby Giraffe trying to find his legs.

Game wasn't as close if you take out a 75 yard and 35 yard run. Is this how that works?

My assertion here is that if you look up the stats on hail mary success rates from that distance, it's ridiculously low. So comparing that to what the scouting report showed in terms of our defense being leaky against the run, I just wasn't surprised we gave up the 75 yard TD run.

So, I was surprised at the hail mary TD success, and not surprised at all by their 75 yard run. That's just my subjective take, that's how I'd recap the game.

Vegas had us losing by 3 points and it's scary how often they get it right. The game played out pretty much like it was "supposed to."

Fortunately, losing this one does nothing whatsoever to hurt Rhule's rebuild. If we tighten up our run defense and stay healthy, there's enough talent on this team to actually go 9-3 this year.

Which would be amazing progress.

...but our run D in its current state is awful.

After sobering up a bit, I think it's all far worse than the score. We looked outright atrocious against the run and on o-line Saturday. Bad line play is what brings losing seasons.

I didn't think the WR room looked bad. I thought they looked fine.

Still seems like the group struggles to create separation. Barney had a great day, what does it look like without the Hail Mary?

We’re great at scheming up yards, we’re still meh when it comes to converting those into points in the redzone. Left a lot off the board early and then had to play catch up literally the whole game.

Way more concerned about the d2 caliber o line coach and how we’re gonna scheme up a run defense. Just frustrated that we brought in some solid WR talent and, much like the whiffs on the o line, waiting to see said talent infusion make a noticeable difference

Dane Key and Nyziah Hunter have a combined 423 yards receiving with 4 touchdowns. They are pretty noticeable to me. You can also add in freshman Cortez Mills Jr who has 128 yards and 1 TD. There is nothing wrong with our receiving core and no reason to act like the damn sky is falling. Most of us knew we were going to have some line issues on the defense- that was the difference in this game. Most teams not named Ohio State or Michigan have a little rebuilding time after sending their interior d line to the NFL.

Meh- you take out the 2 cupcake games and just look at how we’ve done against power 5 competition and those stats you outlined shrink dramatically to 17 catches for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns from key and hunter combined.

And to be clear, I’m not acting like the sky is falling. I’m just tired of the same ole song and dance. Haven’t beaten a ranked team since 2016, 2nd longest such streak in FBS. Our defensive run game goes well beyond the D line- countless missed tackles from linebackers and secondary in the 4th quarter on 3rd down that could’ve ended the drive and per usual, we didn’t.

Let’s hope Michigan is on the high end of their expectations and I’ll feel better about this a month from now. That said, we missed a golden opportunity to really springboard this program on Saturday

I would bet that when the "Did we really get beat that bad?" graphic is released, this will be one of the games on the left where the team that won is actually less successful overall than the team that lost.
