What Did We Learn - Ohio State Edition

The team definitely fought back after falling behind on the road vs the #4 ranked team.

Good Lord, that opening sequence from the botched KR, putting the ball on the ground on the first play of the game, then taking a sack on 3rd down deep inside your own territory,  to then shanking a punt for 30 something yards...I was expecting all game to be like that. But the defense came out and took a stand. Idk, but the mentality of the team felt different today.

The team fought hard today. If we play like this vs UCLA, we win by 2+ scores. I think Lincoln will bring it and so will this team.

I learned that no matter what the circumstance is, we have perfected the art of losing one score games. If there is a way to lose a one score game, we will dig deep and find a way to get the job done. This has become our IDENTITY.

We had a chance to beat a top 5 team on the road, win a one score game, and get bowl eligible and we blew it. What more motivation does this team need. One stop, one good play on offense and we can’t get that done. 10 years of this pain and despair. Will we ever get over this hump?

I know, I should be happy the game was close and we had a chance. That is exactly what we keep telling ourselves year in year out.

We are wasting a good defense and if I’m Dylan I’m questioning if this staff is capable of giving him the tools and coaching he needs

yeah, he is Adrian Martinez 2.0.  Good player and tries hard, but he is not money on the big stage.

Pros

no quit in the team today

Cons

I don't think they will win another game this year and will have another 5-7 record.
Dylan is a freshman! He used his legs today and that’s a plus. He needs to grow in making better decisions but he will continue to grow as a qb.

This program is no closer to winning big time games today that it was 10-15 years ago.  Fact.  We are no closer.  This is a sub par team that looks sub par against better teams.  Ohio St did not show me much today either.  They are not Urban Meyer like Ohio St teams that would have flat out rolled this team today.  The $20 million NIL roster, looks rather blah to me.  If that is what $20 mil gets you for a roster, we better spend $40 mil.

Raiola has to have more time and a better line to make those throws.  I honestly think that a true dual threat QB is the only way to go in this age of college football.  If we can't get an NFL caliber O-line and NFL caliber Wr's then you have to have a dual threat QB.  Simple.

I hope you all watch football games other than Big Red.  The athletes and speed on other teams is a remarkable.  Not talking about the Big 10.  SEC is so far above other conferences in speed and caliber of players.  We live in a fantasy world here. Reality is were still not close to greatness and toughness yet to really compete with big timers.

I learned that this team has resilience and heart lurking inside, something one could rarely say for a decade now.

i learned that we can absolutely end the regular season 9-3 if we show up like we did today.

Raiola isn’t perfect, he certainly missed a couple back breaker throws, but the dude is an absolute gamer and we are fortunate as hell to hopefully have 2-3 more seasons with him under center.  He’s learning first hand that you need to capitalize on your opportunities when they present themselves- the decision when to loft, inconsistent footwork and setting your foundation are all learning opportunities- it remains to be seen if we have the coaches in place to work on this properly.

I didn’t learn anything in regards to our OC. The only thing he is consistent and successful with is incompetence. The screen calls are an abject failure- whether the wide outs/TEs are incapable of blocking or the coaches are incapable of coaching them up- it’s a play concept that should be completely thrown out of our game plan. We are constantly putting this offense in 2nd and long, often behind the chains, it’s an absolute momentum drain and puts raiola in a tough situation.

we continue to miss use our skill players. Slants were there to be had. The drive we finally had something cooking, satt thinks it’s a great time to bring in HH- it’s pretty clear we have an OC who overthinks the offensive play call- when you mix this with a team who still can’t execute basic offensive concept you get let down losses like today and almost every Saturday for 20 games now.  The drive where we marched down field was mixed with great runs and motion plays with our speed guys-- why is this not a more consistent part of our gameplan?

I’d love to know what exactly we are doing with kick off returns. At this point I’m not sure why we are not just fair catching every time and getting the ball at the 25. We are lucky the defense bailed us out again- this is now back 2 back weeks of us screwing up royally to start the game. You don’t see this level of incompetence with freshman high schoolers.

We are literally are trying to beat teams that’s start with the letter i. Why do we carry what SEC football looks like?

No personal offense with this response- but you made me chuckle saying in 2 posts that we "live in a fantasy world here" and then go on to say we need a true dual threat qb as if we are openly turning down guys like lamar jackson, jayden daniels, etc.  We did the running qb thing for 13 of the past 14 years and only once did said qb play in every game with out an injury.  I think you need to go and rewatch the last 15 years of this progrum- perhaps you're just a bit heated at a close loss today, but you seem to forget the turnover machine and revolving door of poor qb play we've had to witness across 4 staffs.

You say we live in a fantasy world and yet insinuate that the top qb recruit in the nation is not good enough for us.  You say we lack the toughness and greatness to really compete with the big timers when we literally just ended a game an hour ago where we could've, maybe even should've, knocked off the #4 team, at their house, after they came off a bye and crushing loss to oregon that was a 50/50 game.

There are logical takes on this board and then there are takes like yours that define fantasy world.

Its a tough loss- but lets not get carried away.  If you're really that heated over this progrum than perhaps you should find better outlets and ways to spend your saturdays

We're a 5-3 team and generally we play like a 5-3 team.  Today we played better than that against the #4 team in the country, and in their house.  What I get out of today's game is that we have 2 more wins in us plus the bowl game.  Not bad for Coach Rhule's 2nd year.
I hope so, but we were 5-3 last year, too.  UCLA might be the only team we are favored to beat the rest of the way.  USC should beat us and we always struggle with Wisconsin and Iowa.  We win next week and I can see 7-5.  We lose next week and I can see 5-7.
