Grantland: Ranking College Football’s New Head Coaching Hires

How do you rate the quality of a hire before any of them have coached a game at their new gigs?
Well, you get a list, and then based off of subjective criteria, sliding scales, and what will piss off the most passionate fanbases to drive hits, you rank them from first to last.

Nick Saban did nothing more noteworthy prior to going to LSU than Riley did at Corvallis. Saban went on to win the National Championship in his fourth year at LSU.
Saban had Michigan State headed decidedly upwards - first 10 win season in 30 years - while Oregon State has been trending downwards for the last nine years.

Also, Saban was 10 years younger then than Riley is now which was part of their ranking.
Mike Riley ≠ Nick Saban. I wish people would quit comparing the two. When Pelini was hired we compared him to Stoops which is a bit more accurate.

Big Game is in trouble down in Norman right now. Jay Norvell and Josh Heupel fired. Next step is head coaching change.

How do you know? Niether one is done yet.

Lost Letterman graded our hire as a C+ which was 12th out of the 14 hires on their list.

ESPN's Big Ten Blog rated us a C+ which was 9th out of 11 rated in their article (Insider).

Nobody knows the future of anything. However, you can take a look at the last decade and a half and make a reasonable determination.
Could he be the next Saban or Meyer? Sure. But it's far, far, far more likely, based on history, that this hire is going to be more like the dozens of forgettable hires that take place each year.

Nobody is saying Riley is a 1:1 comparison to Nick Saban. It's simply the most common name people are familiar with. I'm not going to go do the research to find a coach who exactly fits Riley's profile who had more success than at their previous school when Saban exists and everyone knows his name.

It's the Godwin's Law principle. Use the most-commonly known example so everyone's on the same page.

I like how Lost Letterman stated that OSU came out ahead by getting rid of Riley and hiring Andersen from Wisconsin. That's a pretty interesting take on things.

Yes, or as the Picker in the Tulsa World calls him, MidGame Bob, he was lucky he won that nc way back in 2000 wt Heupel. Without Heupel then, there would not have been a NC, or Big Game Bob and wt the reason seasons (which were Bo like) Bob would be on the way out. Yet, he has enough grace points wt the NC and the many CC to stay on probably as long as he wants. But my sooner fan friends here in Tulsa are getting very restless - seems very NU like prior to the Bo firing. I think Big Game Bob got to comfortable and it shows. :spooners

this is perhaps our redeeming point - we have a new coaching staff who I believe will be very hungry for success and to enjoy the kind of success they were not capable of at Ore State.

Remember when all the sports writers were saying what a great get he was...

Maybe because he was pretty much the first hire...but when more started getting jobs he fell and fell

I can't say I care what some hacks on some sportsrag think of the hire. I'm a big fan of Mike Riley and think he's exactly what this program needed.

He's an offensive mind, for an offense sorely in need of some direction and an identity. He's great at player development and has a great history of developing quarterbacks...and player development under the prior staff was spotty at best and terrible when it came to QBs. He's a solid recruiter, who I expect to step up his game now that he has a job at a school worth recruiting to.

But beyond all the things he adds on the field, far more important are what he bring in terms of character, integrity, leadership, etc. Most of the problems I saw with the team had far less to do with X's and O's and far more to deal with lacking and dysfunctional coaching and leadership from Team Pelini. The hire of Coach Riley will lead to immediate and dramatic improvement in that regard.

So I couldn't care less what some sportshacks think. Riley was not only a great hire, but is exactly what the program needed to cure what has ailed us.

I think MR could be a great hire, but only time will tell. I like his demeanor I like his hires for coaches. There is a lot of hand ringing about there not being some sort of splash hire at spots, but I will take proven experience. The only thing you can do is wait and see.

If MR were even 5 years younger everyone would think it was a pretty solid hire. He was getting stale at OSU this should be a good move for him and for NU. If it is not than we start over.
