Your 2024 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Honestly more of a PJ Fleck move - he's the only coach I have ever seen kneel it twice to take it into halftime. Generally if you get the ball with close to a minute left you at least run a play to see if you can break something. Not PJ.
Fleck is such a nerd. He might be the most unlikeable coach in college football.

That is low for a goal for takeaways for a defense that wants to  be elite. That's less than 2 a game.  Better than last year but still.  shoot for the stars.  24 is doable.

Eh ... that would be a 50% jump from last year.  That would be significant improvement.

20 would have been tied for 40th last year.  So not elite from that standpoint.  There were only 12 teams with more than 24 last year.   And most of them were not playing a Power 5 schedule.

So 20 is a pretty decent goal in my opinion.  20-24 would be pretty good.

I think if the offense is putting up points, opposing teams will be forced to put the ball up....which hopefully means turning teams over more often.

Yeah, I was going to add that opponents make a difference as well.  Playing teams like Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Iowa doesn't lend itself to getting nearly as many turnovers.

It's in the story, and I forget how far back Sam takes it, but there's only been 3 B1G defenses that have hit that mark, PSU the last two years with Diaz as their DC (he's on a stretch of hitting those numbers for like 5 straight years with Miami the rest of the years) and 2021 Michigan State. That MSU team was such an outlier, though, that you can't really take too much from them. The '09 squad was the last NU team to do it. So while the individual numbers aren't elite, doing them concurrently is.

As much as turnover margin is important, I wouldn't stress over takeaways. There's so much randomness involved in it. Sometimes the things you do that can help your odds of getting turnovers, like playing more zone, aren't necessarily helping you get off of the field.

You want to be aggressive, striking at the ball carriers arms and being able to make plays on the ball in the air and those things, but the best way to impact your turnover margin is to not turn it over because you have infinitely more control over that.

Michigan and Northwestern were exceptional, but Michigan St and Illinois were gunning for our turnover crown.

This year might be the easiest schedule we see in a while.  Hopefully we can take advantage of it.

It coincides well with a freshman QB, but I was thinking about T. Martinez. Dude beat Washington and KSU and OSU in away games. OSU finished 11-2. KSU and Washington weren’t great but those are pretty tough crowds and KSU was 4-0 when we played them.

NU 23rd. 5th in the B1G

Pretty similar to where we've been in the 10 years they've been doing that.

Only Ohio State and USC have more talent than us of the teams on our schedule this year.

Wisconsin, UCLA, Colorado, Purdue and Iowa all between 27 and 39.

UTEP, Illinois, Indiana and Rutgers noticeably down the list.  Northern Iowa not listed.
