What did we learn

I learned Bullock is Superman in disguise. The defensive line is very good; I suspect our D line coach is a special kind of coach that we haven't seen for a while. And what's this...a cb actually going for the interception???
Raiola wasn't nearly as good under pressure....our receivers couldn't get much separation....we'll need to have a bunch of short passes ready to check down to. Dowdell did a good job. After the initial blast of runs we got a little stale with the run play calling. I also think we have at least four RB's who could start so we should get fresh legs in there and  mix it up...we did some of that and it was successful.
Special teams just looks so much better...it doesn't scare me anymore.
The NCAA should fine the network when they bring in East German refs to enhance the excitement of the game. I'd like to hear those refs go through the second half and explain the calls from their point of view. Maybe they can explain the calls and noncalls. I'm not talking about the obvious targeting calls, they absolutely should be protecting the players in this hostile environment. I'm talking about how they can always find a hold or a little push when they want one to bring back a big play but go Sergeant Schultz when a certain QB needs time to find a receiver.

+1, I was thinking the same thing this morning also. If the final score had been 45-10 we might not have had much fire this week to continue getting better on offense.

If we can find ways to get some of the quicker guys the ball in space downfield (Lloyd & Barney for example), I think it'll be pretty hard for 8 of the 10 remaining teams on our schedule to beat us.

Honestly, I can't recall a team getting away with more blatant holds than CU did in that game.  I'm talking about the type you really can't ignore as a ref, reaching from behind, hands insider the collar of shoulder pads.  It was all game long and across the line, but that Fre LT was out of his depth.  

Learned: The blocking from the WR position really needs a lot of work. That's 2 games it's been poor.  

 
I had this thought for maybe a split second last night and I see it from other teams’ fans, that we haven’t beaten anyone good so we don’t know anything yet. 

But that isn’t true in this case for this team, and only people who don’t follow Nebraska should think we can’t make any conclusions yet.

We were 0-5 in one score games last year and 2-17 the past 3 years. Our schedule this season is not harder than last year. We have 1 turnover in 2 games vs. 3 by our opponents (I believe). We had 2.6 TO per game last season. Ignoring everything else, the turnover margin by itself is reason enough to be extremely optimistic. It’s literally the only thing that had to improve for us to have a winning season, everything else being equal. We don’t know that everything else is equal for our opponents, but we are certainly an improved team in other areas too. And it doesn’t matter that we were facing UTEP/CU, and in fact that helps the argument. We beat a bad team in UTEP’s conference 28-14 last year and it was close to start Q4. We got destroyed by CU last year. We have games we can directly compare to the 2 we’ve played. 

It’s really hard to believe this team isn’t winning at least 8 games if the TO situation stays the same. I’m maybe even being a pessimist with that number.

We would've got two legit PI's in the end zone had their QB thrown the ball in the field of play when Hunter was the receiver. Might have changed the outlook of the game getting the ball on our 1 yard line if their QB had known how to throw a ball.

I thought the coverage was good on the main one I remember. I remember him throwing his hands in the air and watching the reply and it didn’t look like PI. Add to that that on that play I did not see any official make the uncatchable signal, and the one nearest the play did not throw a flag. Let’s not give them TDs they didn’t earn.

I'm going to defend the staff one more time for the 2nd half play calling. And I definitely have no problems calling out our staff - I probably did it way too much last year, actually.

I really think Satterfield struck a good balance in the 2nd half of burning clock and not throwing downfield a bunch. The last thing you want is for the clock to stop because you went with lower percentage throws downfield and then a high octane spread offense from the other team starts scoring quickly and they're back in the game.

CU sold out to stop the run. We tried some plays to get the ball out into the flat and work around the blitz. Those were smart play calls because they're high percentage throws inbounds. The clock keeps running, and you're trying to punish their blitz.

Their defense just did a pretty good job of stopping some of it.

I think we need to get Lloyd, Barney, and Rahmir more involved in the passing game to open it up a bit. But we need to see a couple conference games first to see how we fair against some better defenses first to know for sure.

He didn’t need to do anything spectacular.  He did a few things that worked and they got burned by penalties.  It was frustrating to watch but it worked…..we won.
