What did we learn Rutgers edition

1. Alabama

4. Tennessee - still on but ARK just went up.

10. Michigan

11. USC

All lose to teams on Rutgers’ level, one of them by a team who lost to Rutgers just last week. A win today by our Huskers is a good thing! Go to bed happy, please!

I think there are several legit things for fans to be annoyed about, but the “Rutgers is a bad team” comment(s) are silly.

First down success wasn’t there today

This is what I'm saying.

I still really think a big part of our problem is the big sets. I don't know why you wouldn't want to spread it out a bit more and train Raiola to read for some quick outside hitters.

What we're doing takes a long time to develop. When a guy is open, Raiola does hit him - almost in uncanny fashion.

But it's just so damn hard to run inside against the blitz in this big formations.

We must be making some decent play calls on 3rd & 4th downs...

I know how much you love this narrative. And for the record I smiled from ear to ear on Bonner's touchdown run. I have actually been swayed mostly into your camp lately.

But I do think there's room for more creativity in the 1st & 2nd down runs. Tosses, counters, misdirections...and that's just for the run plays. Throw in a play action pass when it seems really likely we're going to run on 1st down. Teams are selling out for the run against us even this season.

Still - I find it almost impossible to complain about anything when we're 5-1. I just like the analysis on the board. The glass half empty take would be that there are many tough games in the back half of the season and if we don't improve we won't win very many of them.

I think there's room for voicing that concern while also celebrating being 5-1.

I learned that all those defending Satterfield last week won’t be defending him this week. Move him to analyst, he’s good at play design.
This is really the biggest takeaway over the last 3 weeks. I love the play book we have, but holy s#!t do we not have a rhythm. Like, why would we use the exact same play, "2 back set" with Barney in motion, that was a dud earlier in the game to try and get a 1st down in the 4 minute drill to ice the game?????? Where are screen passes, or drags and slants when you can't hit the long ball and are getting pressured? Why did we just forget about jet sweeps, power plays or anything that's not a zone run?

Basically at this point the whole offensive coaching staff needs to be scrapped. Our receivers are soft and run lazy routes, our running backs lack vision and the ability to make guys miss (outside of Rahmir just being an athlete), Dylan seems to be regressing, TEs have disappeared. The only good thing is honestly the OL, which is just average at best if we're honest.

What I saw from players:

Missed cutbacks where the RB

ended up running into the asses of their linemen.

I saw Raiola get greedy. Something was off in his head, Rhule was on him going into half.

What I see/hypothesize about Satterfield:

Play calling is based on perception of opponent and score of game. Holding back to save plays instead of just ramming it down their throats. Stop getting cute and just execute. The vanilla s#!t because you think the game is won is losers mentality because when you need to get cute to win the game then the psyche of players is tight bootyhole.

I think what is most encouraging is that we found a way to win despite adversity . That felt like a game we would have found a way to lose in the past.

Right up until we stopped them on 4th down their last offensive drive, it felt like exactly that kind of game.  I had a feeling after they scored their first touchdown that they'd find a way to get the ball back, punch it in again, take us to overtime, and win there.  The defense stepped up when we needed them most, and despite the offensive and ST struggles, that alone was cause for celebration.

Still a lot to be concerned about, so it's good to go into a bye week, not just to help build the team's confidence since they won today, but also to hopefully evaluate the aspects that aren't up to snuff.

I can never put my finger on it but something is just so off with the play calling offensively. You're right, it's like we're scared to cut it lose and step on their throat. I think we got gun shy when Dylan through his pick, but you gotta go back out and give hime some easy throws to get him back in a rhythm.

But even if you don't trust the pass... I think it was the 2nd quarter or something where we had like 4 or 5 straight runs that were all positive, then we threw it 3 times and had to punt. We're so schizophrenic offensively!

Great win. We needed a win like this but Rhule really needs to focus on fixing the special teams. How hard is it to go and get the best special teams coach money can buy? We have it to play 4 full quarters of complimentary football. Today the defense saved the day. I can only imagine the possibilities if our defense, offense, and special teams played 4 full quarters of good complimentary football.

Having said that, I was really glad to see that the team was able to overcome bad offense in the second half and horrible special teams play throughout, with the exception of Buschini, who showed great heart and battled through pain. I believe that with a competent ST coach, we can have a decent chance to win every game even against ranked opponents like USC.

Just watched the Rhule postgame presser…why is our media afraid to ask the tough questions? Not one question about what Rhule plans to do to fix our nonspecial teams. It would have been nice if even one reporter had the stones to ask a question about our inability to have competent and reliable special teams play. Very disappointing. It does not seem like anyone is concerned about us having 5 blocked punts in 6 games.
