What did we learn Rutgers edition

Game balls to Buschini and the defense.

We'll need the offense and defense to show up to beat Indiana and have any chance to make Ohio State competitive.   Not this "one or the other" business we've been seeing the last several weeks.
While I agree that I’d love to see both sides of the ball show up and play great, we can not overlook the fact that this team has a much different “feel” to it. In the past it felt like the O was trying to do stuff to show it was a good O, and the D was trying to flex as a good D. This team seems much more like they are playing for each other on both sides of the ball. In Illinois when the D melted down, Dylan and the O seemed to approach it like, “No worries, we got you guys and we can fix it.”  Same this week for the D. Dylan struggles and there is a legit respect the D has for him and the O where you felt the D going out there to pick up the slack, not so much to worry about how they were posturing as a defense. In the end that dynamic is so much better for the outlook of this program than either side trying to play in a bottle.

From a quick glance, we only had 4 plays over 5 yards in the 2nd half.  And only 1 over 5 yards in the 4Q (the fake punt that Lloyd should have scored on).

3Q 11:49 Dowdell 12 yard rush

3Q 10:01 Lloyd 14 yard reception

3Q 1:42 EJ 9 yard rush

4Q 14:47 Lloyd 30 yard reception (fake punt)
Wow.  That's not going to cut it.  And only one was a pass from DR.  2 runs and a Boomshini pass.  DR hurt, sick?  Looked off all game tbh.

I'm concerned about it.
special teams is like this:

Find players that aren’t on first team O or D.

Give those players clawing for playing time a chance to prove themselves.
Spend 40 min per practice teaching, coaching, rehearsing the plays they need to do. It’s not too hard, just requires effort.

Lastly, Special Teams is about effort. Plain and simple.  Players who are “this close” to cracking the Top 2 should be playing Special Teams.  Maximum effort, good coaching on specific/exact execution, full effort, and making plays.

The players that make plays on special teams are the next up for reps on the field during game time.
Special teams players should be a few No1 players, trusted players that can execute, and players that are clawing for upward depth chart paying time.
We have been out-executed, out-hustled, and out-coached thus far. Put our best players there to get the job done and let everyone else claw their  way to the top for playing time.
Also, COACH THE DAMN PLAYERS TO EXECUTE THEIR DAMN JOB.

I blame coaching 90% for our abysmal showing on special teams.

Side note…at least we aren’t fumbling and throwing picks 2-4 times a game anymore.
I could be wrong, but isn’t  most of the punting and fg units made up of mostly starters and second string?  Aside from snappers and kickers of course.

i don’t think it’s going to make things better by putting in less talent.

Interesting that Williams is basically a pass-rush specialist but ended up playing the third-most snaps on the DL (Robinson and Hutmacher).  He was credited with 8 pressures (2 sacks, 3 hits & 3 hurries) in 27 snaps by PFF.

Elijah Jeudy tied with Butler for the fourth-most.  Jeudy seemed to be a guy who needed to step up.  Seems like that is happening.

Van Poppel got 15 snaps in his third game on the way to a planned four-game redshirt.

Shavers got the third-most snaps among LBs (34).  He seems to be well on his way to solid-contributor status.

Gbayor played the second-most but his grade was .... not good.

Shockingly, Hartzog continues to be bad.  Missed three tackles (half the Huskers team total) and gave up 5 catches on 6 targets for 70 yards.  Hopefully after the bye Hill will be back so Buford can take Hartzog's spot.

I think this was the first game where he played like a true freshman. He’s been so good for a freshman this year that it was almost like he was due for one of these games. I think we will see a lot of improvement next game. If DR is as good as we all think he is, a game like this will help him refocus and improve

Not sure PFF got the memo about the Shavers/Butler number switch.  They had Butler only playing 20 snaps.

34 snaps for Butler and 20 for Shavers seemed more inline to what my eyes told me.

Ah, that's entirely possible.  I thought that was a little odd.

Rhamir the leader in yards from scrimmage.  He's not a superstar but I don't think he gets enough credit.

And I think he broke more tackles on this play than Dowdell has all year.

Was at the game. Everyone has covered everything else, so I’ll just say: the refs, I can’t take it anymore, they’re so bad

I too was at the game. Here were a few calls that stood out to me. And I may be wrong, but this is just what I remember…

  1.  Targeting on Rahmir during KO return

    • I understand he was pushed, but the guy still lowered the crown of his helmet
  2. Holding on Buford when we had them backed up at goal line

    • Literally did not make contact with the Rutgers receiver
  3. Multiple holding calls for their guys falling over

    • 5 yards of press coverage where you can make contact and they still never pulled jerseys
  4. Fidone stepping out

    • I’m prolly wrong on this one, but on the screens it did not look like he stepped out at the 1
    • I know we scored the next play, but still…
  5. Random review of the targeting by us on the ball over the middle

    • the series after Neyor? was murdered over the middle with no review

I’m sure there was a few more, those were off the top of my head.

They also picked up a few flags against them.

Not trying to complain, but being at the game you could feel the fans’ disgust with the refs.
