I don't follow college basketball much.
Is the bias worse in basketball than in football? I was seeing Michigan was ranked #24 and went 8-24 last season. This season they're 11-3 and beat #11 Wisconsin (now unranked) in an away game and #22 Xavier (now unranked), but we are 12-2 and beat #14 Creighton (now unranked) in an away game and #15 UCLA. I don't see why they are ranked but we aren't. We had a much better record last year.
You don't necessarily need to be a die-hard follower of the hoops team. However, I'm sure you know we made the NCAA tourney last year, and this year we have a slightly better team so far. Just look at the schedule and catch a few games at home here and there. Because NU has won around 20 straight in Lincoln, so it's funner to see. Plus yall live in Lincoln (if I remember right) and it wouldn't be a bad idea to go to at least one game. Get you guys some hot dogs, nachos, a diet pepsi or coke or sprite and enjoy the atmosphere during the winter months.
As far as college basketball rankings, they fluctuate a lot until you get deep into the season when everyone is playing conference games. We are just 3 games into conference play out of 20 games. So their is a real up-tick in competition. And in the B1G, the home team usually gets the calls and preferential treatment (advantage).
Personally, I think the Big XII has the best overall basketball conference. The ACC is always talented. The East has ballers. The SEC has been becoming better and better over the past 5-7 years, and trending on becoming premier. In fact, the top 14 teams in the AP poll has 7 SEC teams! Would have been unheard of a decade ago (for decades and decades). The Pac 12 was pretty good and we got some good basketball programs that joined the B1G with UCLA, Oregon, USC and Washington. I so wished you went to the game in Lincoln against UCLA. The B1G is generally known for being a pretty good conference, but they always (and I do mean always) choke their way out of March Madness early in the tournament. It's crazy.
Like I mentioned, there really isn't a clear cut format to ranking teams through the first 15 games, but it does give a gauge at the start of the year. Come Feb 1st and it starts to become more understandable.
Go to a game! I would ! Get you a dog and a beer and some cheap tickets before the prices go up. College hoops is a fun experience
