Huskers hiring Pat Stewart as football GM

I think this is a good thing.  The complexity of managing the NIL distribution and assigning value, scouting the portal and HS recruiting, and analytical evaluation is difficult.  So many moving parts now like a junior NFL which it is basically without a Commish.

Probably and it’s an another Rhule buddy hire!  It’s a great time to be a friend of HCMR

I wonder how many coaches don't hire guys who are somewhat their "buddy" and have prior experience with. Not trying to be critical of your post at all, I sincerely wonder how many coaches are comfortable hiring a guy that they have no experience with, or don't come very highly recommended from a good friend?

this just simply isn’t true. Sean Padden has been the Nebraska GM since Rhule took over. We had another GM, either with Frost or Riley that came from the Rams but his name escapes me.

Most top college teams have a GM now. while it is a growing trend, Andrew Luck is far from the first GM in college sports. That position has existed for almost a decade now.

8 of the 12 CFP teams had gms 👌

Rhule has never worked with Ekeler before. He's only known Butler for about 8 months. Holgorsen he only knew via meeting him in coaching circles like the AFCA - they'd never worked together before. That's all three coordinators. But sure, he's all about the buddy hires.

True- but we already had one these GM people and he was shifted to what im guessing was a new position. At least I’m not aware of anyone leaving.

What about the special teams dude, the wr coach and I’m sure there’s more that have been forgotten. Because they’ve been fired or reassigned.  But this isn’t a coaching position, so there is no way to know if he’s good or not. I think the only requirement is to not sleep with the coaches.  And wasn’t that lady a buddy hire as well?

@huskerfan92

Bruh, I gave yall the benefit of doubt, but you were way off.  Just because Neb has a position with a GM title - you apparently didn't understand what a General Manager means in football.

Husker GM Padden was a scout team manager guy that managed and prepped the assistant coaches with scout team players and their development.  He was also expected to engage with the newbie/younger guys.

That is not what I or many people think of when you hear "Football General Manager".

But, Padden was given a General Manager tag title as the Huskers GM.

So let's compare what NU'sGeneral Manager was doing,  with Andrew Luck's responsibilities as a Football General Manager with Stanford.  Which is what I was original excited about.  Now Compare....

GM Andrew Luck' role and responsibility:

Adopt a professional sports model.  Husker's GM / Padden? Nope.

Navigate the complexities of NIL deals plus player development. Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope

Manage the coaching staff (that includes HC).

Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope.

Roster management - Manage player personnel and roster.  Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope.

Recruiting - Oversee player evaluation and recruiting strategies.  Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope.

Alumni relations -  Build relationships with boosters and Alumni.  Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope.

Fundraising - Help increase attendance and secure sponsorships.   Husker's GM /  Padden? Nope.

Stadium experience - Oversee the in-stadium experience.   Husker's GM / Padden? Nope.

Husker GM Padden on his roles -

"Whenever there's sort of something new, Rhule kind of throws me at it and says, 'Alright, figure this out,'"....  “It's really just a fun way to stay on top of the young guys,” Padden said. “I grade every one of their days so that I get a sense of how they're developing, how they're coming along.

And it also allows me to engage the younger players on the team with regard to their development. Sometimes guys end up on scout team and feel like they're lost. Well, I lived on scout team for three seasons of college football, and so I know what it's like.” - GM Padden

No offense, but I just don't think you understand what hiring a GM means in today's college football environment and the responsibilities that comes with the title.   And that is what I alluded to from the beginning.

Maybe this new Husker GM will have more of a real GM responsibility?  If not, then just forget everything and let's create a lesser titile.

By the way, Padden is still on staff and was move to a different position/role.  He was also a guy from Rhule's past during the Temple days.

He was literally talking about the "special teams dude".  And I don't believe that Rhule has ever worked with the WR coach.

So maybe actually have something of substance instead of just throwing crap against the wall so you can argue.

What do you mean it isn't a coaching position?  Everyone he was talking about is a coach.

Like I said...

I think the only requirement is to not sleep with the coaches.

Where did this come from?  And what does it have to do with anything?

I'm not the one that mentioned coaching staff in a GM titled thread

GM, Assistant to the HC, Director of Player Personnel, Director of Player Support, Coordinator of Football Sport Science- and an assistant, Senior Director Player Personnel, Director of Football operations-and an assistant, 4 or 5 recruiting staff of different levels, 3 nutrition staff dedicated to football, numerous strength and conditioning football specific staff, the new position, and more-but I'm not listing because I became fatigued.

My point is- I don't think this new world is as confusing as we're lead to believe.  What is confusing is handling 20 plus administrative football-specific staff.  And these positions are not even the coaching positions.  But what do I care?  It's not my money.  Just hoping that a staff of more than 30 can handle a roster of 105 and create a desirerable amount of wins and a chance to occasionally play for a conference championship.
