Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

If being higher on that chart (towards the top) is better, then Sorsby graded better than Raiola as well- I don't know who would have taken his performance over Raiola's- total yards there was no comparison.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!

Cris Collinsworth paid 6 million in 2014 to become majority owner of PFF. He's made a killing from it. And every year someone mentions PFF grades, I hear Collinsworth voice and see his smirk. I'm not a hater, but not a fan either.

Reminder that anyone can become a PFF grader if you are over 18. All you need to do is take a 6 week (unpaid) self learning web course. Then each game you grade gets you $60.

You bring that up a lot but it has almost nothing to do with how the ratings are actually determined.

The Good IMO:
1) We won
2) The receivers have good hands
3) The DBacks played well

The Concerns:
1) the O line and D line played like they were wearing concrete shoes. Cincy had speed on both sides of the ball. They had more hustle than the Huskers.
2) unforgivable sin- ball on the 1/2 yard line and the tackle messes the snap count!!!!
3) The O line was better at pass protection that they were at run blocking. The right side of the line was better that the left side.
4) The left side of the O line let through the pressure on Raiola most of the game. Raiola was pressured most of the night from his left side.
5) The D line is no getting it done- can’t sustain drives reliably.
6) I DON’t think the line is fast enough to seal off the outside for sweeps. No speed.
7) No SACs.!!!!

Unless Cincy is better than suggested, we are heading to season more like last year’s again.
Not sure of the reason for saying this- Raiola needs to stop throwing the ball to receivers covered by two people at 2-3 yards short of the 1st line.

He averaged 5.8 per completion against Cincy. We need to increase that for sure. Good article below. I was more concerned with the D (DL/LB) after Cincy, but this raises some questions with the O. Still a W. Only 4 opening date wins since 2015......A lot of stuff on film to improve, but concerns are there...Snippets below.

Nyziah Hunter and Dane Key caught 12 of their 16 targets, scored a touchdown each, but barely went over 100 total yards combined.

For much of the night against Cincinnati, I felt like I was again watching the 2024 Huskers. New pieces were there, sure, but the way it all looked, especially on offense, reminded me oh-so-much of what I saw throughout much of 2024.

An offense that averaged 23.5 points per game in 2024 scored 20. An offense that averaged 5.3 yards-per play put up 4.5-per. A passing offense that averaged a 96th-best 6.8 yards per pass averaged just 5.8. And an offense that put up just four plays per game of 20+ yards only broke that barrier one time all night.

I was trying to rank my concerns regarding players. I think not having an RB2 ranks ahead of DL. I think the DL will develop. RB2? No idea of the solution.
RB is a huge concer for sure. I'm a run the damn ball guy and like a bell cow RB to get 15-20 touches a game. But we have to have a good stable to spell him as needed. EJ had 32 total touches (25 run and 7 catches) and at approx 200lbs is going to take a beating. Who do we have behind him? Mozee, converted WR, Nelson? Ives?

Pass offense and defense both pretty good. Rush offense and defense both pretty crappy.

Our lack of a deep ball this game isn't really a concern - Cinci's whole defense plan was built around stopping it, so it was either short passes or rushes. The last part is the problem - against a defense that should've been fairly easy to rush against, we just turned in one of the worst rushing performances of the Rhule era.

EJ is alright, but should probably be our #2 guy behind someone better. Losing Dowdell hurts - he's got his limitations, but even just being able to rotate him and EJ would help. Or Charmar Brown (from Omaha, played for NDSU, then chose to transfer to Miami over Nebraska), he's looking decent against Notre Dame tonight.

Hated missing out on him. Big kid at 220. Built for the B1G. Great resume from NDSU. Read that Rhule had a money limit and wouldn't go past that. Cristobal did....Article said Rhule banked on relationships and Cristobal banked on commas.....In today's day and age, money talks. No quality run game or depth will hurt us in a few weeks. Passing with who we have as receivers and QB will improve. RB room no idea....
