Minnesota Game Preview

Would love to see our defense bounce back a bit, this week they were shaky. Got the job done, but shaky.
I don't feel the defense was shaky. They finally faced a team who could pass the ball competent enough to open the run game up.

Cant expect to hold a team that throws the ball 40 times a game under 100 yards passing. I think the defense will play pretty damn good this week for a Friday night game.

I can't quite decide how to characterize the defense. My first reaction to "shaky" was similar to yours. But I guess I'm not sure it's all that far off. Maybe "average" would be better.

On one hand, holding them to 379 yards isn't terrible. 379 yards per game would be #75 in the country. So a bit below average. But they are also only averaging 354 yards per game, good for #97 in the country. So they were above their average.

We started out well - they didn't get much on their first two possessions. But then they went TD, TD, Punt, Punt FG to close the half and scored a TD to start the second half. That's not very good. But they did recover to have a good fourth quarter.

So I guess something along the lines of "shaky" isn't all that far off. "Uneven" perhaps but it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Remember Malachi Coleman?

He has played in 2 games for Minnesota.

1 catch for 6 yards in a 66-0 blowout of Northwestern St.
1 target (0 catches) on a fade route this past week vs Purdue (4 total snaps)
Yeah, what happened to him? He was the star of the recruiting class then just couldn't make the starting lineup, so he jumped ship and his career was completely flat now. Anyone know the whole story? I remember hearing attitude issues and not practicing hard with the team. Anyway, if he does play I hope our DB's make him look like the worst player on the field cuz I'm salty that way

Three turnovers certainly contributed to their success some.

Halfway through the season I'd characterize the defense as having some serious vulnerabilities in terms of talent, that they are mostly mitigating through savvy scheme and tenacious energy.

I think most of the hope was he could translate his athletic ability into football skill. That doesn't seem like it's happened. He is an elite athlete, though.
