Dylan Raiola

Ok State in 2010 had the 61st ranked defense.
Well, the easy guess was Dylan as this was a Dylan thread.....

I looked it up (again guess was form memory) But here's Martinez Okie St game: Yep. I'd take this again....

October 2010, Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez had a breakout game against Oklahoma State, leading #14 Nebraska to a 51-41 upset victory over #17 OSU by setting freshman records with 323 passing yards and five touchdowns, plus 112 rushing yards, becoming the first Husker with 300+ passing and 100+ rushing yards in a game

I count three people in just the last couple pages of this thread acting like we're gonna have a hard time replacing him, but OK.

Frankly, I really don't give a flying **** one way or the other about the reasons he left due to the simple fact that Dylan is far from irreplaceable.

People enjoy discussing things on message boards. That may not apply to you, not sure. I’m addressing your last paragraph there (which incidentally was starting to sound unnecessarily aggressive).

Some basic bullet points to kind of tie a bow on this thing:

-Raiola is not anywhere close to being as good as “Tommie Frazier or Mike Rozier (your words).
-There will be some QB’s available in the portal that will be as good or better than 2026-level Dylan, for sure.
-Matt Rhule seems like his momentum has stalled. He’s an amazing salesman, so you can’t tell it by his words or his demeanor - but this thing is at Defcon 3, judging by the firings, looking at next year’s strength of schedule, losing a great running back, having a terrible defensive front, and the list goes on and on.

But, hopefully you’re right that it’ll be easy to replace him.

WE'RE LOSING THE QUARTERBACK FROM THE #65 PASSING OFFENSE IN THE COUNTRY, HOW WILL WE EVER REPLACE HIM?!? 😭😭😭
WE'RE LOSING THE RUNNING BACK FROM THE #81 RUSHING OFFENSE IN THE COUNTRY, WE'RE DOOMED!!!😭😭😭
This. What and/or pieces will we add to make these numbers improve......Has a RB ever done what EJ did (post season accolades) and was the RB on the #81 ranked rushing offense. The fact he did what he did is amazing....Truly.

My question is this. Did Dylan's play elevate those around him to perform better? Would we have won 7 games if not for EJ? If you answer no to those, are we truly losing that much with Dylan heading out? One can argue as a JR he could be "that guy", but what has he improved on? The deep ball seems to have all but gone away. Prone to getting sacked. Still holds onto ball too long. Struggles to elude pressure etc....Thomas didn't develop? WR's didn't play up to par? Dana and play calling? OL? Barthel not having RB's up to speed? Satt didn't develops TE's? Shorts didn't develop WR's? OL stunk in pass pro? Rhule fired Donnie to try to fix the OL, but you can't fire everyone involved in the process.

My point with the above is a whole lot of other guys to blame for offensive woes, but the common thread is the trigger man. I think Dylan has "potential" on another team to be that 5 star guy, but it's not going to happen at NU. And to quote Bill Parcel's: "Potential means you haven't done anything yet. You lose with potential; you win with performance".

And I've gone on record and will say Dylan helped to get us back to back bowls not done since 2013-2014, first bowl game since 2016 etc...But IMHO, his ceiling was reached at NU for NU. Maybe another spot he reaches a higher ceiling.

Without EJ and Ekler possibly miss a bowl this year. (And Hartzog's INT).

And maybe it was a mutual decision with Rhule and Co and Raiola....Props to both sides for not discussing it.

The bold is a good point.

I tend to analyze stuff in terms of odds; what are the actual odds that we get a QB as good or better than Raiola? I’m thinking those odds are lower than most think, because I think Rhule’s schtick is running out of gas heading into year 4, personally.

B-U-T, I’m seeing people floating the idea that Dylan was going to leave pretty much no matter what. If that’s true, please throw out everything I’ve said. 😅
All good points.

I don’t see scenario where we pick up a QB as “good” as Raiola. But, if we just get one good enough, that is also semi mobile, I don’t think it will affect our W-L noticeably.

I might be more tolerant of Rhule’s schtick because I see him attempting to correct deficiencies. And it doesn’t appear to be random scapegoating changes but rather in areas of obvious need.

I hadn’t thought about it much before but yeah, I think DR was destined to move on with anything short of an upward rocket trajectory including the playoffs. And, as we know, that didn’t happen but rather his shortcomings came to light. I don’t blame them for wanting a better situation to highlight his pocket passer skills.

I think this is where folks get it twisted. One can still be angry, disappointed etc with leaving, but can understand popping spoke for a better perceived location/results...How many have left for a new job? Promotion? Transferred to another location within same company? Doesn't mean you hated where you were. Just that you like somewhere better. Or moving for what is better for you than where you are out.

Why is TJ not the guy?

In terms of where I’d estimate his passing ability to be by the start of next year, and his ability to be able to read defenses and help consistently move the chains, I’m thinking he’s probably not there until 2027.

I think he could be a pretty good player in 2027, though.

Let me ask you two something: do you still think Dylan is a great QB? If so, why?

Like... do you have a chubby for QBs with a high completion percentage on short throws and nothing else to show for it? His other stats are average to poor. He's #55 in the country for yards per game. He's #71 for interceptions despite missing three games and sitting on the bench for about half of three others.

Like I was saying earlier, I'd have a hard time calling him a better QB than say Casey Thompson. I don't know if we'll find a QB that's better than 2026 Dylan, but if we can't find a QB that's at least that good as 2024-25 Dylan, I'd be astonished.
I no longer think he is a great QB. My comment was about his perceived greatness aka recruiting ranking. And no, I don’t believe we will pick up anyone approaching what he was supposed to be. I do think we can find somebody plenty good enough and possibly more effective.

I can definitively say that I have never had a chubby related in anyway to a QB. All flacid here. Although Tommie Frazier may have been the cause of a few wet dreams back in the day.

Raiola was never going to live up to what a fan base thought a "5*" should bring to the table.

He's never been hungry a day in his life.

That doesn't translate into above & beyond performance.
