1. Coaches can make first contact without having to get permission from the school.

Also, the scholarships will not count against the "transferred to school" for one year. Ex. If we got one kid then we could go this year with 86(I think) on the roster. Flip side is that we would only be able to recruit 24 the next year when we have to count that scholarship as ours.

Sure as hell doesn't sound wise. Not only would that cause a dramatic increase in suffering from concussions, but I would imagine getting more tired throughout the game. If I was a lineman doing that all game I would dizzy/lightheaded by the 4th quarter

Just off base here. People are confusing this kid's issues with technique. He stroked out twice based on migraines, not concussions. Did the technique lead to additional migraines? Maybe. There are a lot of moving parts in that equation and I am not the kind of doctor that helps people. Regardless, here is some insight on being a defensive lineman.

While banging your head into things while already concussed certainly would not help the situation, the rest is moot. The reason is that when you,as a D-lineman, 'head butt' someone you are not just hitting them with your head. You are generating force from your hips up through your back, shoulders, and neck. When you make contact the forces acting on you are spread out through these muscular systems as well. Helmets also displace/dilute point-of-impact forces to multiple points around the head. Because of this the force on your head is SIGNIFICANTLY less than it would take to become injured.1 This is because your musculature can only absorb as much force as it can generate.2 Equal and opposite forces. Physics lessons, blah blah blah. Though you are correct that it will make you more tired. More force output = more tired. Hoping for some better depth this year with no injury bugs to alleviate this.

Concussions come from receiving to much force to the head. Usually this happens when a hit occurs near the chin(or lower part of the head) going upward and the neck, etc. can not help displace the forces. Otherwise when the system is relaxed because nothing is expected, think crack-back block victim. You just are not in these positions on the line with enough speed to generate that kind of force. Statistically, you are more likely to have head trauma on a roller coaster than being a lineman.

1- You are also delivering force with your arms as well so you are not doing the most effective head butt to start with. Thus, the cranial forces are even less in this situation. This assumes you are doing it right. Find some vid of soccer hooligans attempting this for accurate portrayal.

2 - This is why people are taught form tackling, etc. The better position you are in to deliver a blow the better you are to receive one. The better you are to receive it the less likely you are to get hurt. It amazes me when I see horrible technique these days when it was the first thing I was ever taught for this very reason.

  3. +1

Looks like the coaches knew what they were doing, have a monster LB class (especially if we can land Claiborne), Chans would have been wasted at LB and our staff didn't lead him on. Good luck to him on defense, but just wasn't a spot for him with all the talent we have and will have.

I thought we were recruiting him on the other side of the ball?

He wanted to play defense and most were recruiting him to that side of the ball. We wanted him on offense, hence his decision to go elsewhere.

Is it just me or are we ok with this loss now that our LBer corp is looking top shelf?

Helps quite a bit but I think this isn't a big deal only if we get Sandland. Otherwise still need to plug the TE deficit we are going to have in the near future. That's why we were on him for his offensive chops.

We were, but most recruiting sites have him listed as a LB and it made it into the thread title. Almost as confusing as two Newbys...

  5. Football is a chess game unless one team can physically dominate the other.

Otherwise, the chess game isn't going away from something that is working but creating things that will work later in the game. I am all for running between the tackles because they can't stop it but we are not as physically dominant as we used to be. Parity in college football has taken a lot of that away. However, the routes receivers run and the order they run them is a big deal too. Just like you hope to catch the defense cheating one way so you run the other you hope the corners start jumping the short routes and the safeties bite on play action. Go back and watch a single position for an entire game and you will see this play out. I'm sure that OC's will outsmart themselves on occasion but what they are trying to accomplish is something that not only opens things in the future but keeps what is working now actually working so it doesn't get stonewalled.

Ignoring this is just not giving Beck credit for how hard his job really is. We all armchair coach but that is ridiculous.

  6. Maybe, but tOSU's QB might start out pretty rough. Everyone just assumes he'll pick up a new offense no problem. What if he gets the checks wrong? What if he's only effective running and teams stack the box? And that's not even considering the other players on offense. I think Urban will have done a good job just getting them to 8-4. All the talent in the world doesn't mean anything if you don't execute. And execution begins with familiarity and repetition.

And a +1 to you sir.

  7. Ohio State will have a top 5-10 defense with a very competent QB. Think back to 09' and where we would have finished with a competent offense. I see no reason at this point not to believe Ohio State will be everything people think they are. No kid will play less than 100% just because he's not going to a bowl game. They are still competitors. See USC last year.

I think they have enough defensive continuity that they should be very solid on that side. What I wonder about is if a new system( without the athletes to run it how Urb wants it) with a QB who is still young is going to be consistent enough to keep their defense off of the field. I don't care how good they are, if your defense is sucking wind in the third quarter you're hosed.

  8. Michigan and Ohio State are closing the gates it seems to me. We have 3 recruits according to you form Ohio, but only one is rated in the top 300 of the Big Ten, Ohio State has 5 and Michigan has 17 already committed from the top 300 potential top athletes. That seems like we are losing to me.

I am saying that we have lost the edge to get the Texas kids due to not playing there anymore, I am not talking about the past, but the future of our recruiting area. That makes it look like to me that the recuriting is going to be a lot tougher. Numbers being taken will affect all, but he quality of those taken makes a big difference, look at SC, on probation until this year, still recruiting nothing but 5 and 4 star, quality is more important than quanity.

Nebraska needs to win and quick or the problems on recruiting will seem a lot different than in the past.

I heard that same story from Frank, we recruit who we want, who fits our system. We have no exceptional system any longer, we need the kids that are just as good as the kids Ohio State and Michigan recruit. So with better kids, better coaching, better recruiting how do you see us in a good position?

While it may not be the edge over the other B1G schools that it used to be we will still be able to pull kids from Texas. Is recruiting Ohio over Texas a 1-1 swap? Absolutely not. But it is pretty good and we will never stop recruiting Texas. Since we have lost that edge in Texas we damn sure better exploit the one we gained in Ohio/Pennsylvania/etc. Is Michigan off to a hot start? Yep. Is Ohio doing well? Absolutely. But they do this almost EVERY year. No point in worrying about it until they figure out how to sign 40-50 kids a year like Bama.

It seems like you are hung up on the ESPN 300. You might want to check out Rivals or 24/7. Heck, read Bleacherreport if it helps you sleep at night. The subjectivity in this whole thing is ridiculous.

The only time I shared your concern for the overall athleticism was the Northwestern game last year. Every time Blatchford was in the Nickel he was going to get beat on a drag route. We had to have someone in there that knew the defense because we had far too many that didn't already. I have convinced myself that this was a result of too much youth on the field and that should be rectified with time. Hello one year later! If Pelini can keep a balanced depth chart then it should not be an issue again.

  9. In the context of that quote, and his other writings, he was talking about making the CCG. To do that we likely need a win at OSU, MSU, or both. Making the CCG seems to be the blogger's benchmark for a successful season. I tend to agree. And making the CCG would go a long way towards setting us up for a really good run next year when things seem to be lining up anyway.

  10. Florida State...I just don't get it. They are ranked high every. single. year. And they are mediocre every. single. year. Please, just stop it already. They play in an absolutely pathetic conference, and can never get more than 9 wins in it. 9 wins is not worthy of a top 10 ranking. 25 teams from the "Big 6" won at least 9 games last year. 9 wins has become pretty average.

USC is going to win f'ing everything this year though.

    oh-no-you-didn-t-white_design.png

We need a dictionary for some folks apparently....

Okay then, it is hardly above average. I did a count and it is 19 teams with at least 10 wins, 4 teams with 9 wins, and 43 with less in the 6 BCS conferences. 9 wins is no spectacle anymore.

    But it's not average.

The girlfriend tells me the same thing. I don't believe her either...

  11. I imagine it's very difficult for the football players to support their children and families unless they have significant assistance from their parents, and/or their partner has a stable non-student income.

For those of you complaining about student athlete stipends, here are some numbers to put things in perspective:

From 2010-2011, the football program at UNL brought in $32,084,379 of profit (not total revenue, but profit source).

Assuming 85 scholarship athletes and a total cost of tuition, fees and housing of $28,580 per year for out of staters (source), that means they pay out $2,429,300 per year.

If you pay each scholarship player $1,420/mo for 12 months, then that is $17,240/player per year for a total of $1,448,400, bringing the total direct payments and education expenses to the players to $3,877,700.

Bo Pelini makes more than $2,775,000 each year, plus $150k for reaching a non-BCS bowl game, bringing it to at least $2,925,000 (source)

From a financial perspective, the university receives a profit of $32+ million while paying out only roughly $4 million to 85 players. That's an insane return on investment for the university, and if you add in the other expenses for medical and academic support, etc., they're still making a killing compared to what they're paying out. Even the coaches at the bottom end make several hundred thousand (or close to $3mil if you're head honcho), and if they leave the university for a better position, they face basically no fiscal repercussions themselves. Coaches can also get significant income from endorsements or other activities that are made possible by their positions as football coaches at a big university. Meanwhile the athletes get an education and maybe $17k in their pockets, but also face strict restrictions on transferring, cannot accept any endorsement deals or money that is made by using their names and numbers in marketing, video games, etc.

You can come to your own conclusions, but to me I think that giving the players $17k in pocket money in addition to a free education is still not enough for what they're providing to the university. I think that to try to call it amateur athletics is a joke.

Also to try to compare their low incomes to what you made as a college student seems completely irrelevant -- how much profit did you generate for the university while you were attending?

A little more info that gives a bigger picture. Can't forget about those other kids! Data from 2010 but lots of interesting stuff for Nebraska schools...

  12. Help me understand silent commits. Why would you do what Courtney Love did? Why commit to the coaching staff, then wait a week (or however long) and announce it publicly? What advantage do these kids get in doing this?

Perhaps by doing it on their time table.....it allows them to be the sole focus for a particular day.....??

A lot of kids want it to be a big deal. Not really because they want the limelight but if there is a press conference or something then they can share the moment with friends and family. I think of it as a wedding. Some people want their entire family to be there for the event and some go to Vegas. Telling the coach ahead of time is just a great thing to do.

  13. This guy doesn't list Nebraska as an interest on any of the four recruiting sites.

    Ouch, wow...what'd you guys do?

How to lose a guy in 10 days by Bo Pelini....

He was clearly distraught when he found out you weren't a real Husker fan.

  14. This is such BS!!!!!It is not working in the live feed!!!!I cannot even hear it because silverlight doesn't work on 64 bit systems???!!!WTF :steam :steam :steam :steam :steam :steam :steam

They turned off the audio when they called the game. Video a few minutes later. Sucks all around. But silverlight does work on 64 bit machines ... ;)

  15. At the end of Simmons’ article, there’s a bit about Murrieta QB Nick Stevens. No offers yet, but he presents a interesting resume: 4.37 GPA

When did the grading scale go past 4.0?

Don't know about Corncraze and using a 5.0 scale but my school gave you a bump if you took Honors or AP courses. As long as you pass the course you got an extra 0.015 (honors) and 0.025 (AP) tacked onto your GPA. An incentive for the assumed GPA drop by taking the harder one. The real downside to this is the amount of courses that the school offers. I graduated with a 4.7 but my buddy from another school only had a 4.15 because there were no more for him to take instead. Things like that make me think of anything over a 3.5 as basically the same thing, awesome for the kid and we have nothing to worry about.
