    Sounds like we're out.

    Why do you say that?

He says it because it is the truth. Mav is a recruiting expert, I would say he may be better at recruiting info then some of the guys on ESPN. He reads lots of articles from various sites and goes off that to give the board good info.

Thanks. I don't know if I'm an expert but I do read a lot. So I basically steal all my ideas for others.

He seems thinks we have enough young DBs so he's looking elsewhere. Apparently that sentiment is making the rounds in the recruiting circles. Which seems a bit odd to me. I do like several of our young guys but I don't think we're totally set there. Not like a bunch of them are already on the field playing or anything.

I can see it if there are some highly rated people in the program and no track record of the staff consistently putting people in the NFL. The old staff was pretty good at that but, based on last year, I can't see the current staff claiming it. Maybe a few more years of exceptional production will change that. Lockdown U needs to be an actual thing before you can sell kids on it being real.

I'm not sure that is a fair comparison necessarily. Most athletes play the sport because they enjoy it, but also receive a free education. I don't think sweat shop workers enjoy their jobs, plus, they probably don't get free gear/clothes for doing it.

Don't get me wrong, I do think it is silly that college athletes aren't receiving some form of compensation outside of scholarships, I just think that comparison is a stretch. Most college students go into debt after college, before getting a job. Football players shouldn't go into debt if they are on a full-ride scholarship. If they do, it shouldn't be much.

I realize it was a stretch. However, there was a thread on here from a few days ago that listed what the top 20 richest programs receive per scholarship player in revenue. It's a rather tough pill to swallow when programs are receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars per scholarship player that's getting very little out of it in terms of compensation. It's the players that are risking irreparable damage to their bodies. Most college students are risking money for going to college while college football players are risking so much more.

I love college football. I rarely watch NFL football. However, the money schools are throwing around these days is making college football harder and harder for me to stomach. When Michigan threw nine million at Harbaugh, all I could think was Pandora's box is wide open. I'd venture to guess Herman will be thrown at least ten by Texas. College football has become a win at all costs.

That article was a significant oversimplification of things. Spending at the NFL level vs the NCAA level is so different it is not apples to apples. It isn't even apples to oranges. More like apples to cow. Regardless, most football players(like athletes of every other sport) in college are doing it because they love it. Take away the scholarships completely and they would still be able to field a team. Athletes are well compensated for what is required of them. Is your beef just that they are not drawing an actual salary?

Paying coaches a lot for expected results makes complete sense. Sure, winning football games leads to better attendance and tv contracts. But here is a study done that proves correlated undergrad admission applications and increased tuition revenue based on an increase in success on the football field. No other sport could prove that correlation. Academics do not want to admit it but a strong football team makes for a stronger university. Coaches salaries should reflect that.

No if Wiscy wins it will be because they played the toughest schedule and it caught up with them.

I've seen dozens of people on Huskerboard excited that we got to play Wisconsin when we did because of this exact reason.

Why is my response confusing people?

If Nebraska beats Wisconsin, the people downplaying this season so far will say "It's because Wisconsin has played a really tough schedule, so they were beat up from that. It's not because Nebraska is that good."

I don't personally believe that's true, but people on here and "expert analysts" will say it. Am I wrong?

But you said when Wiscy wins. Did you mean loses?

Rather telling that the B1G average includes the highest single salary. My quick and probably inaccurate math adjusts the B1G average to a meager $2,272,500 sans Harbaugh. I realize these are still ridiculous salaries but shouldn't a place like Nebraska, with our relatively high resources, be paying our HC quite a bit more. Not angling to get HCMR a raise but if we want (and WE do) to be in the discussion year in and year out? The Moneyball approach wouldn't seem to fit well in CFB.

HCMR took a smaller salary so he could have a larger assistant salary pool. The total paid to all football coaches/staff by a school is completely ignored in this situation but something you have to keep in mind.

Do you have any source for this? Now I'm curious about the numbers when comparing Coaching Salaries among schools.

Just looked through the individual budgets for NU. The football salary pool increased from $3.27 million in 2014 to $4.34 million in 2015 with the head coach making 400k less in 2015. $4.61 million overall in 2016 after adding Billy Devaney(300k).

Still trying to find a direct quote admitting why HCMR took what he did but NU clearly loosened the purse strings and it wasn't for the head coach.

  6. Pob was warming up on the sidelines when Armstrong went down. Fyfe isn't a good qb imo and I don't see him being able to win us games. I stand corrected, it was Fyfe. I still think pob would give us a better shot over fyfe.

Of course he was. Why wouldn't the third string guy warm up when the first string guy goes down? He's only one injury/equipment malfunction/ejection away from going in.

  7. It get it if you want to argue that on a short field it is a judgement call based on philosophy as to whether you play for a return or play against the fake, but what about this one?

Not sure. Maybe playing it safe late in the game with a team that has struggled moving the ball and being down by a few scores.

  8. Seems like when the other team is punting near midfield that Nebraska thinks it is going to be a fair catch situation in almost every case. Because of this they focus on other things. If I am right it is an interesting contrast in philosophy given how much of the rest of the team is based on total effort.

Everything that happens, good and bad, needs to be used as a teachable offense. That's the case here. And, if youre truly promoting team concept, win as a team lose as a team, and coaches are part of a team. Sometimes the opportunity to educate young 20 year old men who are playing a game at a level that seemingly puts them on top of the world trumps this mythical right to play.

I guess I don't understand what the 4 game suspension is actually teaching. The guy will be getting paid to not coach the team.

Sounds like he will be coaching during the week, just not on game days. He is ultimately measured on in-game performance and recruiting and won't be able to contribute when it matters most for the first month. Given how big the first three games will be for visits this seems like a good way to effect punishment while hurting current players in a minimal fashion.

  10.

Amazing the amount of offense taken when someone lists their opinion about a high school recruit possibly not attending Nebraska.

Here's how to state an opinion. I believe that Husker fans over react to everything

Here's how to state a fact. Husker fans over react to everything

Which one do you have a stronger reaction to?

My strongest reaction is to using 'overreact' incorrectly.

  11. I think this is only including vs other FBS schools. 1AA does not count I believe. Or maybe it does....

I'm confused now looking at the website

I don't think it does. Our game against McNeese State in 2014 is not included in the teams played list. It also explains why the SEC teams have so few games ;)

I like how you gave Iowa a chance to win a divisional championship by letting them only play 3 conference games

    Ha!

Before I started, I thought I should get it set up in a spreadsheet to keep track of the match-ups. But it was too late and I was too lazy. So I was just doing it one team at a time. When I got to Iowa, they already had all their tough games stacked in one year and I didn't want to take the time to fix it.

I was going to look at who you had them playing - since they only win when they have a very weak schedule. As I type this I just noticed - no divisions. Who plays in the CCG? Do the top 2 teams play just like the *gulp* Big 12 will next year?

EDIT - Never mind I reread post #1

Yeah, the no divisions is pretty much the "out of the box" way to look at it. Really seems to make sense to me. Protect the biggest rivalries while maintaining a pretty balanced schedule and still get to play everyone at least every other year.

    I really haven't come up with a down-side yet.

Has anybody addressed the 7 home game per year issue? Having a nice schedule and being able to afford it for the poorest team are usually diametrically opposed. Especially since no one is allowed to schedule the Little Sisters of the Poor any more.

  13. Damn! I hope we do offer this kid as we don't have a major OG in play.

Doesn't seem like we are recruiting any interior lineman this year. I keep hearing rumblings about 4 tackles and that's it. They have done really well the last few years on the interior and the numbers need balanced out. Perhaps they take a flyer on an in state kid but that seems to be it.

My wife - who knows much more about such things than I - tells me it's pretty crazy for someone to throw this far without a rotational-style technique.

    https://twitter.com/BeatriceHigh/status/733681023922249729

I was surprised he didn't use it either. If he can get it down that record will be his easy.

Spinning doesn't mean throwing any farther. The records for each are only 2 inches different. Gliding is more consistent and is a seen more at the higher levels in Europe. Spinning gives a longer time to accelerate the shot but provides more places to make mistakes. Greater risk vs greater reward. There are also significant limitations with the spin once you obtain a certain height. Torque limitations vs overall room availability in the ring. World class spinners (generally American) average about 6'4", gliders about 6'8".

Based on the discus film I watched spinning would not help him throw further. He has flexibility issues that will take several years to overcome but it would be good for injury prevention down the road.
