  1. Hadn't seen this before the PSU game this season, Taylor gets the ball in shotgun and runs a zone-read with his running-back, keeps the ball and then runs a traditional option with the same runningback. I guess come to think of it, I've never seen this ran by any team before - seems like a really creative playcall, and it got us a lot of good gainers on Saturday!

Loving the creativity that Beck is bringing to our offense without getting quite too cute, although sometimes he flirts with it.

    This about sums it up.....

    And backs up your statements.

""Some games I get conservative. I play not to lose, instead of to win. That was evident," the first-year offensive coordinator said Saturday. "As I looked back and really thought about it, we've got to be who we are. And that's an attacking offense.""

  2. This is straight from espn.

. Nebraska is still alive for a BCS bid: One of the main reasons Nebraska's loss to Northwestern was so painful for Big Red fans -- besides the fact that it knocked the team out of first place in the Legends -- was because tough road games at Penn State and Michigan were up next. But the Huskers pulled off a 17-14 victory in State College under difficult circumstances, to set up a big showdown in Ann Arbor next week. Even if Michigan State goes on to Indianapolis, Nebraska would be in good shape for an at-large BCS bid if it won out and finished 10-2. In fact, that might be a better outcome than if the Huskers were to win the division but lose in the Big Ten title game. The losses by Boise State and Stanford on Saturday may have greatly enhanced the Big Ten's chances of getting an at-large BCS bid, and Nebraska's fan base will make it attractive to big bowls. If the Blackshirts defense can keep playing more like they did against Penn State than they did against Northwestern and Rex Burkhead continues leading the offensive charge, Bo Pelini's team could make its first BCS appearance in a decade.

After beating MSU it would make me sick to see them in the B1GC.

So much for taking a game off and not watching film. Thanks NU OL

  3. IDK..... just a couple of weeks ago after MSU everyone was singing their praises and just 2 games later we seem to be back in Fresno form where the OL gets stuffed for the most part and only has a few good/decent plays.

What the hell is going on? I know PSU had a stout DL but there were many times in this game where the OL esp. Long, Caputo and Choi where getting OWNED. It's been a while where I've seen running plays get blown up before they even had a chance. 4th and 2? I would have almost felt better if we punted or kicked a FG.

IMO it's lack of talent. We clearly don't have B1G size and speed in the trenches. I think that's why see the DL get absolutely no pressure. We're just not big enough going up against B1G OL. Did Bo just whiff on recruiting the last 3 years or is this how B12 talent looks?

  4. How do you work on catching the ball? It seemed like our guys had such a difficult time catching and holding on to the ball. How do the coaches work on this with these players?

How do we get our front D guys to break through? There was very little pressure on PSU's qb. (Although I thought PSU was holding our guys often throughout the game and the refs didn't call it.)

How can we get other players in? Just to try them out. When our D gets tired, are there others that can come in and play while the starters take a rest? Same on offense. We have all this talent, I'm puzzled as to why we aren't using it if only to give our starters a breather.

IDK.... I'm starting to wonder whether it's just bad talent. Think about it: We suck at holding on to the ball with Gilmore and now it's the same with Fisher (with a minuscule improvement). It's sad when it's 3rd and 8 and you know you almost have no chance bec. a WR won't make a play. Sure we had a couple of big completions but if Kinnie and Bell make a couple of average plays any D1 WR should make, we win this game by 14 points. Kinnie's boo boo's are the worst. The ball hits him square in the hands and he drops it. Bell's was a little more difficult but still very catchable ....... IDK..... looks like we have a talent issue.

  5. The only realistic way we go to a BCS bowl is if we win out, MSU loses another game, and we beat Wisky/yOSU in the CCG.

    And all this because:

    - We decided to blow off NW

    - We decided to not watch game film (I didn't say it, Yoshi did)

    - The team decided to live up to the Pelini mantra: "Every year you have to lose to an unranked team (preferably at home)"

Yup, a heavy price to pay. Makes you wonder that with only 12 reg. season games how on earth a team like NU that's trying to get back to relevance takes a game off. Falls totally on the staff.

So what do you suggest we do? Fire our coach who is on the right path to get us back to the NC game? Everything you say is so pessimistic and dumb... go away

And everything you say is stupid childish gibberish that brings absolutely nothing to this board.

At least I say it like it is while you like to suck on lollipops.

    Go away!

  6. Aaron is a good kid, loves Jesus and has a good head on his shoulders, but you could see this in high school too, he struggles with humility big-time. I don't blame him, as I'm sure he's had people telling him how great he is all his life, but he sure thinks highly of himself and it doesn't seem he's ever had to really learn patience until now.

lol, He loves Jesus, but has a humility problem? That is interesting. Also okay the kid was what a 4 or 5 star running back and just has not panned out. Abdullah was nobody and came in here and is contributing. Heard is contributing. It happens the 4 or 5 star players get to college and go ooh crap these guys are for real. Look at sexy rexy. He came in and destroyed his freshman year. Heard from any other running backs? If he leaves it opens up another scholarship for next year. sorry my SEC way of thinking is all.

Is this a joke? He is a freshman, how can you already say he "just has not panned out"?

    Exactly.

From what I've watched of Green he looks the best of the fab3. Go back and watch the limited runs that he had and compare that to what Ameer and Braylon have done from the LOS.

Green is that type of back who needs reps to get hot. Unfortunately this staff has found every which way possible to hamstring his development like they have Jamal's.

  7. I am very concerend with this weeks game. I know that we will be able to move the ball on Michigan and that we will be able to throw some looks at Drob that he hasnt seen this year. But what worries me is how freaking fast he is and how good he is at breakin containment on the outside. This has been our struggle ALL year, containing QB's that has any speed at all, the stats show how successful soem of them were at running against us, but what it doesnt show is how well they got outside the pocket and threw against us. I think we have a good chance to win next week but we have to figure out a way to contan Robinson and to make him make so mistakes!!!

Here are the rushing stats that some of the QB's did against us with attempts, yards, TD's and long

    Carr 3 16 1 16

    Price 6 10 0 9

    Wilson 6 32 1 21

    Miller 10 91 0 29

    Gray 17 67 1 30

    Colter 17 57 2

    17

We might not have the talent that MSU has on the DL but Bo needs to put his ego aside, call up Dantonio and ask him for the blue print on how MSU harassed UM all day long and beat up Robinson.

Anything less and you might see an UGLY game with NU on the wrong side of a wood shed beating.

  9. He needs to realize hes a true freshman and there is no way hes coming in and taking Rex's position.

    Yep.

Also, the few times we've seen him play it looks like suicide to run him anywhere but the edge. He's no Rozier, LP, etc yet.....

Really? When has he been given any meaningful snaps with plays designed to run up the middle?

  10. How we lost to Northwestern is baffling to me.....................I hope to GOD that Indiana or Northwestern take MSU out of the mix. Sucks that we need some help to get into the championship game.

Yup. Makes my blood boil when I think about the number of opportunities we've blown under the Pelini regime - from the last 2 B12C's to NW.

I understand there are bad days where teams don't play well and things don't go right but blowing NW off is unacceptable! Do I believe that was the only reason we lost? NO - NW just had play makers who executed and took advantage of our weak areas on defense. I don't understand how a team like NU with all our tradition can't seem to get it together just from an effort and execution point of view

  11. What we learned today?

    Nothing new.

Still the same old crap. Mistakes, mistakes at inopportune times, lack of execution, lack of effort by certain players....Just when the defense makes somewhat of a stop, the offense steps in shoots itself in the foot and turns the ball over (literally or on downs). When the offense scores, the defense steps in and can't get off the field on 3rd down. PSU made some really questionable play calls going at Dennard and not throwing more at Green! Baffling....

Yeah, it was a good win but PSU made some really dumb calls like MSU and handed us the win. Sorry - NU didn't earn squat here. NW (read: smart guys) took advantage of our weaknesses and killed us.

  12. So far we look like toast.

Embarrassing to see this offense and the MISTAKES. Absolutely NO play makers. I can't believe how horrible Bo's teams look in November..... it's like a cancer. Problems everywhere, WR, OL, Secondary. IDK...... I get angry/sad thinking how we could have become this bad after 4 years of Bo. I really had high hopes when he was hired but now it looks like Bo's failing in all aspects

  13. Stai was the speaker. He was a wealth of information in my opinion. Kind of told it like it is. Very little coach speak. Here are a few quick bullet points of some of his discussions:

    1. As a Graduate manager he works a lot with the scout team in preparing the team to simulate our opponent's offense. Also, works with the line during the Summer. Does other stuff as well of course.

    2. Talked about "DAT" discipline, attitude and toughness. Seems like they are really preaching it to the team espically after the game last week. Stressed that they need to be very focused this week due the issues at Penn State. Penn State will come out and play hard with Joe Pa's firing and all. We need to match their intensity.

    3. He said both the coaches and players over looked Northwestern. It falls on the coaches to be prepared and they were not.

    4. Defense is really going at it hard this week. Bo very unhappy from last week's performance.

    5. Expect more player rotations this week using the younger guys. Not only at O-line, but other positions as well like RB and WR.

6.Mentioned that QB draws and screen plays maybe used more in the near future.

    7. Briefly praised right side of line ( M. Jones and Long) along with Caputo. He said Long will end up being a very good player as he is only a sophmore right now.

    8. Mentioned that ARod was sick last week, but that is not an excuse for his play.

    9. Mentioned that Yoshi is one of the toughest players on the team. Almost tore his pinky finger off in the Fresno State game.

    10. Ben Cotton also tough. Torn tricep and gimpy back, but playing through it.

    11. Overall team is pretty nicked up, but so is everyone else at this point in the season. Nature of the beast.

    12. Penn State overall might be the best D we will face. Mentioned that they are very fast.

I am sick and tired of this line from Bo and company. How many years in a row will they overlook an opponent and lose (ISU or TxTech 2009) or almost lose (SDSU last year)?

Enough is enough. Once or twice in a coach's early career is understandable, but after that it should be a wake up call. You can't take a week off, there are no "gimme" games in college football. Anyone can beat anyone on any given Saturday.

Winners don't make excuses, they make plays.

    Exactly!

And why the media and a large contingent of fans continue to give Bo a pass for such egregious performance year after year (over looking unranked teams) is beyond me. It's like we're scared to piss Bo off.....scared we're going to lose him. It's no wonder he treats the fans and media like horse dung.

Seriously - "over looking a team" is right up there with "quitting" as the ultimate insult in football, and Bo's teams are making a habit of it. If TO can't have a serious conversation with Bo on this and put him on notice, then get prepared for worse.

Yes, I'm sick and tired of this crap. Bo's teams are a reflection of him: Immature, hot/cold and inconsistent.

  14. How could you not put a ton of stock into what he says? I don't understand, really. Everyone is wanting Big Red to get back to the mid 90's mentality, and J.Peters was as big a part of that run as anybody! But he's just a "blah, blah, blah", guy to you? The mid 90's teams weren't out to just win, they wanted to hurt people BAD, and they did. Thats what made them special. Thats what the game of football is about. Thats why we love them some much. It seems now that a lot of fans are OK with losing to inferior teams year after year. I'm not one of those fans. Sorry, but I will never be one of those fans.

I have to ask; do you really mean literally "hurt" people or was that figurative speech for something like "run up the score"?

"hurt" people = bad intentions. A bad ass attitude. That's what football is about - not a game for alter boys. Alter boys go to Princeton. Or Northwestern.

    Oops.

  15. Someone explain to me how we intend to stop PSU's run game with 3 DT's? Don't know much about that Thompson guy who just moved from OL but it doesn't look good at all.

I have a feeling it's going to be a long ugly night in Scandal Valley.

because only 2 need to be on the field at a time.

    Brilliant.

I didn't think I needed to state the obvious, so here goes: how do we intend to stop PSU's run game with 3 DT's in the rotation?

    DE - DT - DT - DE

& one DT rotating in. Seems pretty self explanatory to me.

Not really - bec. you're always going to have 1 guy who's tired. #3 subs for #1 while #2 is still playing OT. Then #1 subs for #2 but now #3 is getting real tired.....

You need 4 DT's - and quality ones at that. Thompson is NOT quality. This game is shaping up to be ugly in the run stopping department.

  16. I think Bo is a superb DC to say the least but I'd love to see him return to an attacking defense. Yeah, we'd probably give up more pts but we'd get wayyyyyy more early stops, 3 & outs and turnovers on opponent offenses. Just wishful dreaming.....

    GBR!!

I don't understand what you're saying: If he's a "superb DC" then why doesn't he run a scheme that works?

And sorry - I don't buy the excuse that our talent is worse than Iowa State's.

    It worked superbly in 2003, 2009 & 2010. Also, 2008 was a MASSIVE improvement from 2007.

This "one" year he's having problems.....so four out of five works for me.

    GBR!!

For the millionth time - in all those years that you mention, he had GREAT players... and STILL managed to get beat by some ugly margins and in most cases by teams who had no business beating us:

2003: Wood shed beatings by KSU, tu and MU. Nuff said

    2009: ISU, TTech. Nuff said

2010: tu, UWx2. Heck, even throw in #18 aTm who was ranked much lower than us.

I think you're letting youself get blinded by the this whole charade that Bo's some sort of defensive God. I've wondered many times if the people that keep saying this are simply too simple minded or just want to believe it bec. they cannot comprehend the what-if's. Take for instance the MU game in 2008. People like to gloss over it and give Bo a pass bec. it was his first season but to me - that game and how he designed his defense spoke volumes. He devised a scheme TOTALLY ill suited to the personnel and the result was one of the most embarrassing losses in recent memory. Fast forward to 2011 - same symptoms same results.

Iowa State only scored 9 against an offense which could only score 7. But that's obviously the Ds fault

We only lost to Washington once...and they scored 19 to our 7. But that's obviously the Ds fault too

We lost to a Texas team who could only score 20. But again, that's the defense's fault.

I fail to see a point in your argument.

For the love of GOD, "UWx2" = "Washington the 2nd time around"! OBVIOUSLY we didn't lose twice to UW.

I like how you spin the tu and uwx2 losses! Great job. Not.

In both those games our defense got run over. Go back and watch the film. Nuff said.

  17. Someone explain to me how we intend to stop PSU's run game with 3 DT's? Don't know much about that Thompson guy who just moved from OL but it doesn't look good at all.

I didn't think I needed to state the obvious (bec. I already mentioned 4 DT's incl. Thompson), so here goes: how do we intend to stop PSU's run game with 3 DT's in the rotation?

  18. Someone explain to me how we intend to stop PSU's run game with 3 DT's? Don't know much about that Thompson guy who just moved from OL but it doesn't look good at all.

I have a feeling it's going to be a long ugly night in Scandal Valley.

  19. As it stands right now we're a BCS long shot: 10 spots, 6 AQ's. We're not even sitting in a good spot if we win the B1GC so winning Sat is an absolute must

The media has already pegged us in to the Cap1 or Gator bowls playing either UF or KSU! Wow.

    From B1GC favorite to this.

  20. I think Bo is a superb DC to say the least but I'd love to see him return to an attacking defense. Yeah, we'd probably give up more pts but we'd get wayyyyyy more early stops, 3 & outs and turnovers on opponent offenses. Just wishful dreaming.....
