Newcombe was much better passer than Crouch (I believe he was one of our most accurate ever) and threw a very catchable pass.  He was faster than Crouch (Crouch was very fast as well).   Crouch was a tougher runner although he was only 6' -190 and Newcombe was a similar size I believe.  Newcombe was one of those 'glide' runners, like a deer, he took the most amazing long strides and was going much faster than most players on the field realized and many took bad angles.  He was a track star as well.

I think Crouch would have made a WR spot in the NFL had he played WR in college and learned the position to a high level.   Nobody is claiming Crouch wasnt an excellent Husker QB but I still believe he was NOT NU's best QB the year he won the Heisman.  But before Bobby blew the knee in the spring game, he had a chance to NU's best ever QB in my not so humble opinion.  He may well have been a lightning fast version of Turner Gill.

Seriously, I'm guessing you are actually Newcombe (or at least a relative of Bobby).

Newcombe was a GREAT QB (better than Crouch in my view) but he was a fanstatic athlete (one of the top ten ever at NU).   None of the QBs of the past decade are in the category of athlete that Newcombe was - not even in the same ballpark.  Darlington and POB and Gebbia are more comparable, although it is hard to know as we've seen almost nothing of Darlington but I will assume he is a tad better runner than either Gebbia or POB.  Gebbia and POB are better QBs, based on what little we've heard/seen, than Darlington.

Better than a Heisman trophy winner?  Is there any chance that you are Newcombe himself?

This is only true because the 13-14 team had zero post presence.

Jordy is an absolute liability on defense/rebounding, and provides his fair share of blunders on the offensive end. Okeke is quite the opposite, but at least provides another rim protector to go along with Roby. Still haven't figured out why Jordy is first off the bench before Okeke, other than Miles being scared hurt Jordy's feelings again.

I think that might have been true earlier when he was thinking about quitting, but the boys are playing great together now, and Jordy is contributing.  Get on board!

Don’t worry about being “next four out”. If Nebraska takes care of business we will be in. Lots of bubble teams still to play each other. Magic number for the huskers is 23 wins

I hope you're wrong.  22-9, 13-5 has to be enough.

If the committee is taking 4-5 out of the B1G- are we not guaranteed a spot? I get our conference is not very stellar this year, but two things come to mind:  1) The B1G is still a could draw for viewership- so I error on the side 5 teams are chosen 2). Nebraska is hot and Vegas is liking us a lot for covering the spreads- so that has to work to our advantage with the gamblers...So I say- Nebraska gets in by their chinny chin chins

I'm missing something.  You say we're not a stellar conference, but our top 3 will get high seeds.  That in itself should get the Big Ten five teams.  Michigan won tonight.  If we go 3-1 down the stretch, I say we're in.  They can't put Michigan in and not us when we beat them by 20, can they?

I think the staff should stay. That second half showed me something.  BUT if we are just throwing names out DAVE ARANDA.

I agree with your first point, but if I had to play the game, I'd say Les Miles, since his kid is already on the team.

There is zero chance that Riley's on the hot seat after a 10-3 season no matter what. There's even less chance that Eichorst would somehow be on the hot seat.

If it's a 10-3 season with losses to OSU, UW, and Iowa, that means there's a decent chance we're playing in a january bowl against a ranked opponent and win it, in addition to wins over a possibly much improved Oregon team, and a (as of now) top ranked Penn State team.

Agreed. No way that type of season puts Riley on a "scorching" hot seat.

After the type of prognostication going on nationally about the Huskers, I think most fans would happy with the outcome described by Landlord.

At what year do we need to win the west then? Just keep going 10-3 and losing to our biggest west competition and Riley continues to be our coach?

There is such an easy answer to this question. "At what year" is the year that all of the players are players that he recruited. When the quarterbacks (and of course other players) he recruited have played their entire careers here, if we haven't won at least the Big Ten West, he will be on the hot seat.

  8.

2-10 with wins over Iowa and Wisconsin, or 10-3 with losses to them?

Neither. 10-3 with losses to OSU, Wisconsin and Iowa and Riley's seat will be scorching. 0-6 against Wiscy and Iowa is not okay.

There is such a weird disconnect between the national media and some Husker fans. They say we're going to go 6-6, and you'd be unhappy with 10-3? Who is correct?

  9. I am still amazed at how many people feel the BP fire was a bad decision. I feel we are a tremendously better program now than during his tenure. If the guy was worth anything, some team, somewhere, in the power 5 would have hired him by now. I want on the field success as much as the next guy but it was plain to see the downward spiral things were taking under Bo. The cupboard was truly left bare when he left. Great recruits didn't want to play here- plain and simple because of Bo. I believe Riley can pull off championships but it isn't going to be this year. Give the guy a little time with his system and recruiting. I believe we will get a glimpse of the future this year but in no way should any of us expect a championship this year. It took Dabo 8 years in a place much easier to recruit to than Nebraska...

I like two things here. First, don't forget about how Bo poisoned the well for our players before he left. Riley walked into a toxic situation here. He will need time to flush out all of the Bo-loving, Huskerfan-haters. That us-against-the-world mentality was exactly the opposite of what a coach should try to do at Nebraska, where we love our team with all of our hearts. Secondly, we beat Dabo in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 2009. Bo declared that we were back! I bet Clemson is glad that they gave Dabo time to develop the program. They just beat Alabama for the natty, and they were worse than us 8 years ago!!!!!!

  10. Myself, I don't know about expectations, but i'm just busier in my life than I was during the national championship years. As a life long Royals fan, I was wrapped up with the World Series in 2014 & 15 that other than gameday, football took a back seat for me. I'm not even a message board junkie anymore either. I don't know who's who on the team either, sure I know about Tanner Lee is or a Keyshawn Johnson Jr or Les Miles kid, but I haven't taken the time to study the roster, that comes from not caring about recruiting either.

What you say about the Royals reminds me of the Huskers. Both were great for a while, and then, both seemed like they would suck forever; both come from small markets, and it seemed like the deck was stacked against them, but then, the Royals just won the World Series recently. How did they do that? How did they win the World Series against the big clubs that had all of the money? They built the program from the ground up. The Huskers could rise again. We have the fan base and the assets. We need the right coach to build the right program. I hope that is Mike Riley.

Speaking of Riley, who went to Alabama, the Tide, for the most part, sucked after Bear Bryant. They went through Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings (one natty), Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione, and Mike Shula, before they found the right coach - Nick Saban (whose ass we kicked 50-10 when he coached at Mich. St.)

College Football is cyclical. We can be great again. I'm still mad at Tom for retiring. As long as that glorious man is drawing breath on this planet, he should have been coaching Nebraska Football. :-)

  11. I just think that this senior class has unperformed. Out of 20 guys, only 9 or so have contributed on the field in any significant manner. I can't wait to get those scholarships back and to give them to guys who are going to help our program. Maybe, they had injuries and problems and such, and I wish them all the best, but it supports my point, even more so, that Riley deserves at least five years to clean out the roster and establish his program. This is why I think Tim Miles should be on a hotter seat than Riley. Miles is going on Year 6, but it seems like we're getting worse.

  12. I absolutely think we can be great again. We have loyal fans who sell out the stadium, set records for volleyball games, and even get five digits to watch the basketball team. Our program has many assets. This place can be special again.

We need a great coach with a great scheme and who can keep a loyal staff together. I'm so glad that we didn't kick out Osborne in 1977. We need some patience. It was 23 years between 71 and 94, and it's been 20 years between 97 and now. What we need to STOP doing is having a revolving door for coaches. How many DB coaches have we had in the last five years? How are we supposed to establish a program or a scheme with a new coach every year? Where is George Darlington!?

I hope Mike Riley is the man. He says the right things about our history. He seems to be recruiting well. He is only now just replacing the players in the old scheme with the players for his scheme. You have to at least allow his recruits to graduate before you can evaluate his program.

  13. I know that Natter is hurt. I don't know about Brokup, but he's only a RFr. The other three I listed are juniors or above.

Is Darlington not going to be the holder? He played in the bowl game last year as holder and quarterback. I was there!

Harrison Jordan was on last year's depth chart as a junior fb. He didn't make the 105 this year, but he's still on the roster. That's weird. Is true freshman Ben Miles really going to play over a senior?

Taylor was always hurt, but I'm still surprised that he didn't make the 105 as a senior. What does he do all day?
