  1. Huskeraddict, can I make a request? Can you mock one up with alternating (oregon style or NU style), red endzones w/white lettering but scale the font size back and have "cornhuskers", and make the B1G red? I am just curious what that would look like and I have no skill with this.

  2. Here's our official word on the turf being replaced.

Memorial Stadium is all gussied up for 2013 with a new look on its east side. But what about the playing surface? Is change coming?

Soon perhaps. Just not as soon as this year.

According to John Ingram, Nebraska's associate athletic director for capital planning and construction, the topic of potentially replacing the stadium's turf next year will come up.

“While our field has held up well, we will discuss the possibility of replacing the Memorial Stadium FieldTurf, along with many other potential capital projects for 2014, during budget discussions," Ingram said. "But no final decisions have been made at this time.”

    More at the link above.

  3. I'm not the only one here who gets that addict is joking around about being "upset" about this, right? I'm seeing some awfully serious-sounding responses to (what I thought was) obvious joking around.

    Anyway...

From the Spring Game, here's my crummy pic of the East Stadium from the inside.

You're probably referring to my post. Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents is all. Wasn't sure if you guys were joking or not, but I certainly didn't get the impression anyone was upset.

  4. Sorry, I don't buy thievery on this. The N is proprietary and was gonna be in the middle. Originally we all thought it was gonna be large, but it's the same as it was 2 years ago at the Bob. The Nebraska on the baselines was gonna be there too, and is in the current font seen all around the University. The B1G logos were there even in what we thought the floor design was gonna be originally. Red baselines and sidelines, not really a new concept here. The only similarity is the stained N, which is something that is a bit of a trend with aTm already having done it etc. And there is some precedent in having the state in the center of the court and not all that unique of an idea to begin with.

In short, I'm sure there are enough ideas or concepts floating around the interwebs that there is bound to be similarities on what they settled on.

Regarding the court itself, very little, if anything I would change. Glad all that white curving baseline color and white lines for the key and 3point arc are gone.

  5. If we ever build up the south side this stadium is going to be amazing. I'm not saying add seats, necessarily, but build a solid structure and maybe a few sky/press boxes. It would just help enclose the stadium. It could also give another exit for the fans in the south as I hear it's terrible entering and exiting the south stadium.

I realize this will never happen, but I would almost like if they knocked out half of north and south stadium and built them more vertical. Our endzone seating is very strange in the sense that it is so flat going backward. It could be a little bit of a perspective thing, but those endzone sections need to be built a little steeper.

No, it's not a perspective thing. I've never seen another stadium in the country with more endzone seating than sideline seating. I still think they should have expanded north stadium by adding a 2nd deck, not just extending the same plane of seats further and further back.

They should have just razed the north end zone and rebuilt the whole damn thing to match the east and west. Second deck and all. You're right, the end zone construction drags the greatness of the rest of the stadium down. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed those way back when.

I may be mistaken, but I think they didn't because of the track field. They had a pretty limited space to work with.

Yeah, it would have been tricky and added to the cost, scope, and timeline of the project for sure. But, that's why the engineers get paid, to figure that stuff out. KSU is building a whole new addition with luxury suites and new press box in one offseason (including the demolition of the old press box), so I'm sure they could have figured something out.

  7. The lack of real symmetry in our stadium bugs the s*** out of me :S ;oiahwge

The east stadium and west stadium expansions are an example of how to do it right and enhance the overall appeal of the stadium.

The north stadium and south stadium expansions are clear examples of how to botch a stadium expansion. The fact that it doesn't match the original stadium bugs the crap out of me

  8. Hopefully that's a sign of confirmation that the Memorial turf will be replaced, since I can't remember actually having that official stated by anyone in the athletic department.

Great pics as always knapp; as was mentioned, I'm guessing the girder is for a "pinnacle bank arena' sign. Walked around the arena before the baseball game Saturday, really impressive what's going on out there. Not really a fan of the metal sheeting though...looks weird; cheap almost.

Correct, it's the Pinnacle Bank Arena sign. As far as the metal, it was stated that it will patina over time. It will be interesting to see what that looks like and how many years it will take.

  9. Did some updating and this is what would happen if I was put in charge of designing the PBA floor/Memorial Stadium turf:

    PS4nKWV.jpg

    -Remove multi-turf

-Add 'Tom Osborne Field' which was on the turf for one season in 1998

    MekcSwo.jpg

    -Update baseline wordmarks

-State outline returns in different stained wood

-B1G logos moved to inside the lane

    Juuuuuuuust for LoMS

    7ZSzAsG.jpg

Pretty nice. My recommended changes would be, if you're going to have TO Field on there, I think it would look better if it was his actual signature, and put it at the 20's on the field. Also, I would make the endzones red with white lettering and the B1G logo red. If I had an ounce of skill with this stuff I would do a mockup, unfortunately I don't.

As far as the basketball courts, I like the second one better.

On both, my preference would be "Cornhuskers" instead of "Huskers."

  10. I hope the three point arcs and lane are red like the Hendricks court. BETTER YET! Go with my idea:

Very nice, I could be down with this. Be even better if the baselines were either red to match the sidelines, or the sidelines were natural to match the baselines. Other than that this is very nice. Love the center court design.

  11. This is the latest design, released in January, I think.

The design is not dissimilar to the floor on the Hendricks Center practice courts:

I like the Hendricks floor, a little too much white though IMO. The design above it I am not sure if it's official or not, thought I heard Boehm or somebody like that saying it's still a work in progress. I don't mind it so much, but the white floor lines in the court MUST be red. If they are white then it is way too much white.

  12. One thing I notice is the part of the floor covered in plastic right now, that was just poured, appears to be in the shape of an ice rink. So I think it's safe to assume that's what it is. What I find cool about that is, it appears the seating is truly set up for an intimate basketball experience rather than just plopping down the basketball floor in the middle of an ice rink. On that pic where we are looking N, the ice goes all the way back to the wall almost. So during basketball, there will be seating all the way down. Hope that makes sense

If I'm not mistaken, the photographer is facing SE while taking this pic.

Actually facing NE I believe. The part of the arena without the upper decks is on the north side. That is a really cool pic from the concourse out to the stadium.

The LJS has some similar photos here.

  14. I bet those windows are over 10 feet tall, they just look really small in the pic.

    You are correct, sir.

You can kinda get an impression of the size of those windows by comparing the worker whose picture I took a month ago in THIS POST.

There are windows on the south side where a single pane is missing, randomly. I'm not going to believe a single pane randomly missing 100 feet in the air is used to move in equipment. Sorry.

Why on earth does it even matter? Construction is not done so who cares? Besides you that is.

It doesn't. But what else is there to talk about. Settle, francis.

Settled. Just seems you were making a big deal of it.

  16. The brick fits really well in person like Twinkletoes said. Personally the only thing I don't like are the N's. I wish they were solid and not tiled. It's really deceptive how large the expansion is you think you have a grasp of its size when you're walking up to it, but it just keeps filling up you vision the closer you get.

Great work again Knap! If you ever get the time and feel artsy I think a really great shot would be somewhere down the road on Vine street looking towards the stadium. I would love to do it myself but I just don't have a camera that could pull it off.

I agree, the tiled N's are kind of an odd choice IMO. They aren't tiled on the press box side are they?

  17. Really starting to wish they would have left brick out of the arena and expansion designs.

    Thanks for the pics, btw.

The brick is the best part of the facade IMO. Not only does it tie into the rest of campus, but it breaks up all the "concrete." I wish they would have done the same on the west expansion years ago.

knap, I believe the walkway to "nowhere" goes to a new surface parking lot where they will have festival space for "crabfest" and other things. In that video that was circulating around a while ago it would be where the band was playing on stage towards the end.

  18. They haven't announced it formally, but you'd have to expect it will be replaced this summer - as was said above, the stuff is literally falling apart and in very poor shape. The reason we won't see any sound system upgrades are because even though the messageboards are full of people complaining about it, in general, the fanbase doesn't really care. Before the east stadium expansion, they put a survey out asking people what they'd most likely see done to Memorial, and the sound system upgrade was way down on the list.

I also think they'll wait a year to see how the sound permeates through the stadium when 6,000 people now fill the expansion. Any sound upgrades right now would include some guesswork.

Arent the only speakers in the North right now? Thats pretty pathetic.

Speakers in one endzone is a pretty standard set up for outdoor stadiums.

Maybe for stadiums built before 1960 but I can't think this is the case in any modern stadium. It certainly isn't at Mile High or Arrowhead.
