Honestly I don’t see us winning back to back to back BiG games. We haven’t done it since 2016. And we haven’t won back to back road games since….2006?! I dunno I’d like to say we are due but we haven’t had Purdues number for the last 100 years like we have had Rutgers. That and they are better at almost every stat that matters, we may get blown out if the Oline doesn’t magically learn how to pass pro by next week. Although the spread has gone from 13.5 to 12 so there’s that..

Not saying Nebraska will win or lose this game.  But the fact that it has been since 2006 since they won back to back road games has no baring on it.

  2. I think they win 8.  I have no idea which of those 8 games it will be.  If they get a good match up, I see them winning their bowl for a 9-4 season.

I am optimistic because I think the defense is going to be pretty good.  You know top 30.

I am optimistic because AM is not the starting QB this year.   Whether you think he was the biggest problem on offense, the least of our problems or somewhere in between it was time for him to leave. Four years was enough as the starter.

I am perfectly happy that Casey Thompson or Chubba Purdy as going to be QB this team.  I like Thompson he wasn't Texas's problem last year winning games.  It was the sieve of a defense that couldn't stop anyone.

I think special teams will improve.  Even if it is just average and not a liability that is probably worth 1 win.

It's hard to believe that it has been seven years since ADSE dumped Bo in favor of Mike. It's equally hard to believe that, in those seven years, Nebraska has been bowling just twice and has finished with a winning record just once.

Even a pessimist would have given a better forecast for the Huskers seven years removed from Coach Pelini.

And in all these years, we have re-lived and re-lived Bo and how it could have been different.

These days, I am thinking about the future. And hoping it's a bit better. Surely, we are all doing that. So, in the spirit of looking forward, and not just a few weeks to this season, but five years into the future, what are we thinking NU football will end up looking like?

I give Coach Frost and Trev credit for trying to make moves to put Nebraska in better position, but try as I might, I do not see it working out.

I thought it would end last year. Buy out expense might have changed that.

Five years from now, I see a coach with Big 10 ties leading the program. It's time we actually did embrace that idea. Most of the team's we play, even in the future of super conferences, will have a Big 10 flavor to the way they go about their business. Bo came in and tried Big 12 strategies in the Big 10. Didn't work. Mike came in and tried PAC strategies, didn't work. And Scott has tried Oregon/UCF strategies and it hasn't worked well, at least on the offensive side. Plus, our future in recruiting is in the Big 10 footprint.

If/when Scott leaves us, I don't see Nebraska breaking the bank to bring in a super exciting coach. That's just not our style.

I think we will get a solid but not flashy coach to lead us to solid seasons and back into regular bowls or to the playoffs assuming that the playoffs grow to be huge and the bowls go away.

Maybe I am wrong and Scott's offseason moves will put us in great position and we will be extremely relevant going forward. Then again, Mark is not young, so even that prediction might have a provision for replacing the OC.

    Thoughts?

My thought is let the season play out before you are firing Scott Frost.  I would have understood completely if Trev Alberts had fired Frost at the end of the season.  He chose a different path, which I am also fine with.

You just have to let it go.  Unless Frost starts out something like 1-5 this year, he is not being fired at midseason.  He has this season to audition. He knows that his job is on the line. Lets not throw dirt on his corpse until it is one.

Bo loved Osborne! It was Perlman that was the problem. And Bo has said he that he thought Osborne had earned the right to have some say in who his successor as AD would be, but of course Perlman said f#&% that. And so Bo went from having a boss who actually understood what it was like to be the head football coach at a school like Nebraska to Perlman's gimp who was worried about energy vampires and later thought Bob Diaco was the best coach on campus.

I mean ... the boss is the boss.  But if the boss is actively trying to get rid of you (for years), I don't know how you don't have contempt for your boss.

My point really isn't whether BP was right or wrong.  But in life you can't really get away with the way BP treated people he didn't like for ever. It will catch up with you

I haven't lived in Nebraska or the Midwest since 2011.  The overall impression I get from people with a little bit of football knowledge about Nebraska historically and BP is that despite his record at Nebraska he was viewed as a pretty big a$$.  They really didn't understand why Nebraska held onto him even as long as they did.  His public persona away from Nebraska and the Midwest is of an out of control a$$ hole.

I guess this is where I am at on the subject.  You can't have complete contempt for your bosses.  No matter how incompetent you may feel they are.  Bosses don't like that and they will get rid of you.  I was actually very surprised he made it past 2013 and the almost hitting a ref with my hat incident.

Bo didn't win enough to get to act like that big of a d!(k in public to people.

I think right now, that dead time of the summer, writers and radio hosts are just looking for anything at all to b!^@h about.

Oh, yeah just listened to the latest version of this.  They spent the first 15-20 analyzing Frost's PC at Media Days.

They are really just pissed because he didn't say anything. So they have to talk about him not saying anything.

Shatel's article was a favor to Trev Alberts to, little-by-little, influence and mobilize public opinion for Scott's eventual firing this year.  Alberts is around the program enough and knows what it takes to win.  He realizes Frost isn't the one to turn the program around and needs to garner more support and continue to build a case to make a mid-year firing.

This is a very interesting take.  If Frost gets fired mid season it is because the team is sitting at something 1-5 or 2-6 at which point he deserves to be fired.  Trev Alberts will need no help from Shatel or any other media member to soften the blow.

He posted an article in the afternoon congratulating him on being all business. Screw Shatel

Yes, he did.  The one in the afternoon had a lot of the same stuff, he obviously went back and edited it.  The earlier one had a completely different tone to it.  He talked about Frost being business like and it had a bit more of a positive spin.  I bet an editor wanted a little more bite to the article.

  9. I like all of  these things, but I would lose crab legs if I had to get rid of one.  I like surf and turf.  I like a little crab with a lot of steak.  To the people that like their steak well done,  to each his own I say. I don't like my steak rare either.  A medium steak with a warm pink middle is good.

My wife would lose the fried chicken or ribs. She tolerates fried chicken at some sort of get together but would never serve it at home. She hates ribs she thinks they are greasy.  She loves sea food and crab legs are her favorite.  I think you would be amazed at how many crab legs she could put away at an all you can eat place. When we go to one of these places, which are becoming much less common that is all she will eat.  She doesn't want to waste stomach space on other food.

Not high on Wisconsin like previous years.  I feel like Iowa is slightly better, and the Badgers will have an 8-4 type of year.  Both are over evaluated.

Yall this is a year we can win them both.  The west is down this year.  They are ripe for the taking

I tend to agree.  I don't see this being a vintage Wisconsin team.  Unless they have some incoming freshman RB that looks like Johnathan Taylor I just don't see it.  The difference in their team last year was the lack of a truly great RB.  They had good ones but not that great one.  I am not sold that this Mertz kid is the second coming of Russel Wilson either.

There defense should be solid.  Lets see how they look after their first game against PSU.  They could be 1-2 after 3 games.

If BP would have won some games that mattered and not got blown out at times, he would still be here regardless of being such a

    d!(k.

I have no idea if Solich and Pud got along as underlings.  If what you say is correct, it explains a lot with regards to Nebraska football the last couple of decades.  Solich became head coach because of TO.  Pud was hired as AD because he came highly recommended by TO.  Do you honestly believe TO would have recommended Pud as AD if he didn't get along with Solich?

Sure if BP would have won more games there is no way he would have been fired.  You only get to act like an a$$ if you are winning a lot.  Nick Sabin and Bill Bellichek get to act like jerks because they win a lot.  Bobby Knight only lasted so long at Indiana because he was winning a lot.  When he wasn't winning a lot he was more trouble than he was worth.

I doubt very much TO knew how much Steve Pederson was despised in the AD office before he became the AD.  My oldest brother knows 1 of the former assistant AD's that quit as soon as SP got the job, because he wouldn't work for the man.  This is a guy that had worked at Nebraska for 25 years.

At Nebraska, that type of consistency gets you fired.

Well I think BP problems were more the way he dealt with everything else vs. his record on the field.  BP would still be here winning 9-10 games a year if he wasn't such a d!(k.

Solich and Steve Peterson never got along when they were underlings. They were not going to work well together.

Over his tenure (coach and AD) and not counting 2020 they averaged a 9-4 record. Is that the kind of consistency you are looking for? I don't think he was a bad coach or AD but I also don't think this is somehow a great thing for Nebraska. I don't think this changes anything for Nebraska.

You need to be consistently good, before you can be great.

I think it will be interesting to see if Chryst does start adding things to the offense.  He does like the forward pass more than Alvarez.  I don't think he will stray too far from the formula.  I don't think they are getting rid of the fullback.  It won't surprise me to see an uptick in their passing and more use of the shotgun.  We will see.

  14. Would love to have seen Rush on there farewell tour.

Saw Motley Crue on their "Farewell Tour" how ever many years back.  Alice Cooper opened for them and his show was way better.

As soon as things open up I am taking my son to see RHCP's.  It really doesn't matter where they are at we want to go see them.

  15. I was at this game I was all of 12 at the time.

It was very much a let down and probably hard to get back up to play again after the emotional drain of playing so well against OU the week before.

Missouri was decent that year. I think they ended up 8-3 or 7-4.  They had a three headed monster on offense. Phil Bradley at QB, James Wilder at RB, he played quite a few years in the NFL and a guy by the Name of Kellen Winslow at TE. It was basically a game of who scored last won the game.

JD is good, not great. He had a place as a #2 receiving option in a college offense that contained and NFL #1 receiver, an NFL RB, and a dual threat QB. He struggled mightily when asked to rise into anything more. I won't buy that he was weak or didn't try, I absolutely think he gave his all while on the field. In the end he is a 5'9 receiver that lacks elite speed and will always be somewhat limited because of that. I think he felt he could be more than that and is seeking a chance to show it. I think he will find that he's a good role type player and hope he truly enjoys his senior year of football as it will likely be his last.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  Spielman is a great complimentary receiver.  When he had someone to take the heat off of him on the outside he thrived.  But with that said, he is not going to be that guy that takes over a game when the other team doesn't have someone else to work off of.  I am not sure Wondale Robinson is that type of guy either, but he still has a chance to prove me wrong.

Pat Forde went to Missouri and graduated somewhere in the middle of the Osborne-always-kicked-Missouri's-a$$ era.

It's an axe he's going to grind as long as he's got a job.

    Just ignore him.

Read the article yesterday.  You can't argue with a lot of what he says, except.  No one at Nebraska, including Frost ever said they wanted to leave the conference. He is only half paraphrasing what Moos says.  He leaves out other parts, which I am sure he read in Sipple's article.

The article's tone is just petty and vindictive and designed to piss off a certain crowd.  You are right, being a Mizzu grad he has absolutely no love for Nebraska.  Loves to kick us when we are down.

He has certain Schools and college towns he loves to go after.  He went hard after how bad Pullman, Wa home of Washington St is a couple of years ago when ESPN was going there for game day. Basically said the town sucks.   Been to Pullman nice little college town. I am sure Columbia MO is way better.

  18. I truly don't ever recall believing in Santa.  I am sure I did at sometime, but I was the youngest and my older brother would have definitely broke the news to me just to be a d!(k.

We only got 1 or 2 presents from Santa at my house anyway.  It was usually the big present a new bike etc. It was always kind of a wink and a nudge from my parents.

Now my wife on the other hand loves Santa and wanted are kids to believe as long as possible.  Her parents did the same thing as @KnappIc did.  They would go to church and the presents from Santa would be there when they got home.

  19. This would be very hard for me to do.  I will pick 10 songs that I never get tired of listening to.  By that I mean I never turn it off or skip it.

Minnesota was pretty much the anti-Nebraska last year.

Nebraska could have easily beaten Colorado, Indiana, Purdue and Iowa.  We lost all four.

Minnesota could have easily lost to South Dakota State, Fresno State, Georgia Southern and Penn State.  They won all four.

Their season could have been a lot different if they lost even a couple of those first three.

Very much so, confidence and momentum are such a huge factor in football.  They gained both winning those close early games.

  21. 3 hours ago, teachercd said:

We need to stop thinking that the crappy teams that beat NU are good.  It is more that NU has just been really bad.  This year should be the first year where things start to look better.

I like your enthusiasm.  When I look at other teams I usually ask myself 1 big question.  Is this team on paper going to be better than they were the year before.

When I look at Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin my answer is no.  Minnesota is taking some huge hits on offense and lost their best player on defense to graduation.  Iowa is breaking in a new QB after having a 3 year starter and all the crap that has gone on there lately has to have an effect on the team and losing your AA defensive end.   You don't just replace Johnathan Taylor or your top receiver.  Though Wisconsin's defense should be at least as good as last year.

On paper I think Nebraska looks to be a lot better offensively than last year and a little better defensively.

This has always been my 'wonder'.  If he had the energy to campaign for congress and become a congressman, why did he leave that which he knew to do something outside of his element?   I think he easily wins 2-3 more NC if he had coached 7-10 more years.   I think the Eric Crouch years could have been different - winning the NC in 2001 and 1999 weren't outside of the realm of possibility- with a Tom coached, developed and recruited team.  Frank was a good coach, but he wasn't near Tom's quality of coaching.  Ifs and buts and candy and nuts.

As was said already, TO had promised Frank the job.  He actually stayed 1 year longer than originally planned.  He was going to retire after the 96 season.  There were other things involved also.

    1. He thought he owed it to his wife to quit and spend time with her.

    2. He had already had heart bypass surgery about 7-8 years earlier.  He truly thought he was going to be in declining health.  Which didn't happen as you can see he is 87 and still going pretty well.

When you are a type A personality like TO was, you can't just shut it off.  He basically ran for congress because he was board.

I think within a couple years after he retired he regretted doing it.  I think if he would have had a do over he probably wouldn't have retired and then he would have coached another 5-10 years.

Osborne wasn't asked to be AD to succeed Devaney, but Osborne was hoping the AD job would go to an internal name who would have it for a few years, and then turn it over to Osborne when Osborne was ready.  I can't remember the guy who Osborne had wanted to get the AD job after Devaney, but that was Osborne's succession hope/plan at AD.  When Byrne was named AD, it was evident he would stick around for a while, as he was younger and came in as an "outsider".

Al Papik is who TO wanted to be AD.  You have to remember that Deveney was loved by all but when he left as AD and BB took over the Athletic department was a mess infrastructure wise and deep in dept.  Deveney had neglected a lot his last few years and was moving on autopilot.

Bill Byrne gets a bad rap from a lot of people as "Dollar Bill", but he made a lot of tough choices and presided over basically a high water mark for Nebraska athletics

My exact point. Because Osborne has so much endearment within the fan base very few have pondered if his decision to run for a political seat was (or could be) the direct link to our current below average men's programs? I personally am one who has pondered it and my conclusion is that Osborne is every bit as much to blame as is Peterson & Perlman. To those whom haven't ponder it my presumption may sound preposterous and out right sacrilegious but it's not hard for me (or anyone else) to see what could have been had Osborne decided to be AD when asked initially. He declined his responsibility, choosing instead politics and the door was open for Peterson to destroy the football program.

So when was Osborne asked initially to be AD?  BB became AD in 1992?  When TO wasn't named AD at that point the ship had sailed on him being AD any sooner than he became it
