  1. This has basically taken me from excitement to wonderment to almost embarassment. How much more do we have to take Pederson?? I'm sure the plane is headed to Utah next and then who knows where. eric"the red"
  2. Almost all the news out there is saying there is a private jet waiting at the airport for Nutt and his family to arrive in Lincoln, but the plane has been sitting there for almost half the day and he has not gotten on. Reports say University of Arkansas has set up a press conference to announce a pay raise and other perks that are headed to Nutt for staying eric "the Red"
  3. For all of us that want Bo as the next coach, we have to understand why Pederson couldn't just hire him. NU needed a coach with experience. To give the job to someone without any could hurt, although now it appears this will happen. NU tried. On ESPN the gameday crew basically humiliated NU again by poking fun at the fact that SP was going to hire Nutt, saying this is a step down from Solich. Hire Bo and be done with it.
  4. As of 5pm news channel 3, has gotten word that Houston Nutt is calling his recruits and letting them know he is turning down the NU job. Again I don't endorse any of this, just reporting what I hear. eric "the red"
  5. Decision needs to be made by 5 pm according to the Lincoln Journal Star. Broyles the Arkansas AD said it would not be feasible to match the offer of 2 million, but it doesn't seem to be that easy. The AD says its about 60-40 he'll stay because of his feelings for Arkansas. It's all up to Nutt, as they would say the ball is certainly in his court. eric "the red" stay at huskerboard for the latest.
  6. Here it is, what we have been waiting for. Apparently an offer is on the table. eric"the red" Arkansas coach weighing NU offer BY ELIZABETH MERRILL AND RICH KAIPUST WORLD-HERALD BUREAU RELATED STORIES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- » W-H Online Edition: NU in Transition LINCOLN - Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt was considering an offer close to $2 million to become Nebraska's head football coach Friday, and Razorbacks Athletic Director Frank Broyles said he didn't know whether Nutt was facing a deadline on his decision. Houston Nutt Broyles told The World-Herald that he talked with Nutt on Friday morning and was waiting for his sixth-year head coach to inform him of his intentions. "If he hasn't made up his mind," Broyles said, "then he's talking to both sides and each side confuses him." As of Friday morning, the Nebraska sports information department said there was no press conference scheduled in Lincoln. Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson flew to Fayetteville, Ark., on Thursday night to meet with Nutt. He returned alone at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, arriving by private charter at York Municipal Airport. When asked about his trip, Pederson said, "No comment." William E. Clark, the chairman of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, said Nebraska's offer was close to $2 million. Clark said that the Razorback Foundation probably couldn't come close to matching the Nebraska offer. But people close to Nutt say one of his biggest concerns is job security at Arkansas because he'll lose most of his starters from this year's team. Not only do the Razorbacks have 25 seniors, they have some juniors considering the NFL draft that could lead to 17 of 22 starters moving on. Clark said part of a counteroffer may involve an assurance that Nutt will keep his job with the Razorbacks regardless of what happens in 2004. "If I was in his shoes," Clark said, "and somebody wanted me to take a job where a guy had just been fired for going 9-3 and my best record was 9-3 in five years at Arkansas, I'd stop and think about it a little bit, even though the money is wonderful." Clark estimated that Nutt's package at Arkansas is currently $1.1 million. Spurned by at least one National Football League coach, Pederson met with Nutt just 24 hours after Pederson called Broyles to get his permission to do so. Nutt, 46, led Arkansas to an Independence Bowl victory over Missouri on Wednesday night in Shreveport, La. Thursday, Broyles had told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, "I think he's going. I think it's a 90 percent chance that he is. I could be wrong, but that's my experience with coaches." Pederson, who has been conducting a private one-man search since he fired Frank Solich on Nov. 29, has been a busy man this week. The Associated Press reported Thursday that Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders turned Pederson down for the job Tuesday. Also Thursday, The World-Herald learned from three people close to the situation that Nebraska officials had been in talks with Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator Brad Childress. Childress and his agent, Bob LaMonte, did not immediately return phone calls. When asked Thursday night whether Nutt was Pederson's top candidate now, Broyles said, "Well, I think there have been a lot of people turning him down." It was widely speculated that Miami Dolphins Coach Dave Wannstedt may have been offered the Nebraska job, but those plans fell through when Wannstedt contract was extended earlier this week. Wannstedt may have recommended Nutt to Pederson. Wannstedt was on the Oklahoma State staff when Nutt played there in 1979 and '80. Nutt, a native of Little Rock, has deep ties to Arkansas and was even a ball boy for the Razorbacks as a kid. He has taken the program to a bowl game in each of his six seasons. Arkansas wrapped up a 9-4 season Wednesday night, the school's third nine-win campaign since Nutt arrived in 1998. Nutt has a 48-27 record at Arkansas. Solich was 58-19 in six years after replacing Tom Osborne at Nebraska. One criticism of Nutt at Arkansas has been the number of off-field problems for his players. According to the Fort Smith (Ark.) Times Record, 28 Razorbacks have been arrested since 1997, including 20 since January of 2001. Nutt is under contract with Arkansas for the next six years in a deal that rolls over annually. "My personal opinion is that with people who have the character of Houston Nutt, money is not an issue," Broyles said Thursday. Nebraska sports information director Chris Anderson said today she couldn't confirm or deny if an offer had been made to Nutt. "I won't have an announcement until there's one to make," Anderson said. Earlier this week, two people who have had conversations with NU athletic officials told The World-Herald that Pederson's search would be wrapped up by the end of the weekend. World-Herald staff writers Karyn Spencer and Mitch Sherman contribut
  7. Of the current RB's right now, who do we have in the stable?? Ross, Horne, Tierre Green?? Anyone. eric "the red"
  8. pig sooie huh....what the hell does that mean. All I know is it comes with my pork fried rice. I eat it with my breakfast its called bacon eric "the red"
  9. A Kansas St. female student has filed charges against Ell Roberson for some kind of sexual misconduct. Whether its rape or something else who knows. Whether he can play or not who knows?
  10. Some interesting facts about Nutt: "Under Nutt, who is 45, Arkansas has won more games than any other school in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference since 1998. The Razorbacks are the only SEC West team to advance to five straight bowl games in that span." "He has the leadership qualities any athletic director would want," (Arkansas AD)Broyles said. Arkansas wrapped up a 9-4 season on Wednesday night, the school's third nine-win campaign since Nutt arrived in 1998. The Razorbacks had gone eight years without a nine-win season before Nutt, who is 48-27.
  11. Channel 6 in Omaha reports that the Arkansas AD granted Nebraska permission to interview Houston Nutt. The AD said that Nebraska is a great team with deep pockets. When asked if Arkansas would make a counter offer, if necessary, the Arkansas AD said "most likely". Some interesting side notes I believe are worth citing. Nutt has ten more loses in the past six seasons than Solich did, BUT he defeated both Missouri and Texas this year including Texas last year also. This might be an interesting hire. I think he has good experience, fiery and could do considerable well at NU because of better resources. Interesting how NU lost Van Horn to Arkansas and the football team might hire the Arkansas football coach eric "the red"
  12. As of now Al Saunders is out of the mix and Spurrier, I think, is really going to call it quits for a while ( or at least maybe that's what I'm trying to tell myself). So it really only leaves Bo, I think. I hope this whole big splash crap isn't on SP's mind. Bring in a damn coach who knows the game....the college game that is. eric "the red"
  13. This is probably the first big time recruit NU has lost. I really think he was leaning hard toward the Huskers. This guy was a mammoth. New coach on Sunday eric "the red"
  14. Would you say Horne probably has the most talent out of any of the backs this year?? Because it has been sighted in the past, and I believe he commented personally, about his lack of effort at times. He was even benched at an all -star game coming out of high school because he practiced like crap. Even with that should Nebraska really give up on him that quickly. He is only a sophmore. One of the downsides to Ross is he is so short. Who much more muscle can he put on before it becomes ineffective? He is quite thick as it is. Nebraska still needs to recruit a dynamite back. Nice 6'0" range 210 or so. Someone who can fly. Ross tripped over his own feet twice against MSU and against KSU on the screen pass. eric "the red"
  15. At halftime of the Iowa/Florida game, it was reported that, citing OWH, that Kansas City Chiefs OC turned down the head job. There was a short discussion after that where Trev Alberts made a couple points. One to wonder why Nebraska isn't trying to get the best coaches by basically any means necessary. The example he gave was with Kirk Ferenz. Why not give Ferenz 3 million a year, his son free tuition, etc., etc. Then he said maybe it's because Nebraska is not such an attractive place as all of us Husker fans think it is. Actually Mark May or Alberts did call Ferenz and asked him about the Nebraska position and Ferenz laughed and said not in a million years. Wonder if Pederson has scared everyone off?? eric "the red" ps Anyone but Spurrier
  16. I don't know much about this guy, but I guess the logically thing to do is look at the success the Chiefs had this year. Chiefs offense sucked, now its good. Simple enough. What was this guys record as a head coach. How old is he? eric "the red"
  17. Larson was easily one of the the top three weapons we had on the team this year. I can maybe recall two bad punts all year. Salute!! eric "the red"
  18. I took this directly from the Washington Redskins website and is the dialogue from Spurriers "official" resignation. We all probably could expect contradictions, but its nice to catch them. Here is an example. Just an hour or so before he said he had not resigned now he does. Spurrier: 'It's Time For Me To Move On' 12/30/2003 The following is an official statement by Steve Spurrier, released by the Washington Redskins on Tuesday afternoon: STATEMENT FROM STEVE SPURRIER “I am announcing my resignation as head coach of the Washington Redskins effective today, December 30, 2003. "I thank Dan Snyder for the opportunity to coach this team for the past two years and I apologize to Redskins fans that we did not achieve a level of success that we had all hoped. "This is a very demanding job. It’s a long grind and I feel that after 20 years as a head coach, there are other things that I need to do. I appreciate all the support, especially from former Redskins players in the area and again, I wish we would have come closer to the success those players enjoyed under coach Joe Gibbs. "There are many outstanding players on the Redskins team and I wish them all the best. I’ll always be pulling for the Redskins. I simply believe that this is the right time for me to move on, because this team needs new leadership. "Hiring a new head coach will allow [Mr. Snyder] to hire a new coaching staff and hopefully point the Redskins in the right direction. "I’ve enjoyed my time in Washington. Obviously, all of the losing can wear you down, but I believe that the franchise is headed in the right direction. Again, I’ll always be pulling for the Washington Redskins.” Lets just say he does come to NU, he'll probably gut the entire staff. He did it at Florida and Washington. eric "the red"
  19. The Spartan newspaper sums it up rather nicely. Smoker was running all night. Huskers put in a lot of nice defensive packages. Email this story to a friend | Printable Version Published December 30, 2003 MSU loses Alamo Bowl, 17-3 Advertisement Price Bedrooms All Prices Up to $399 $400 to $599 $600 to $899 Any Studio One Two By Joe Rexrode Lansing State Journal SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Nebraska was faster, stronger and better than Michigan State in Monday's Alamo Bowl. The Cornhuskers were also more composed, more intelligent, and their option quarterback, Jammal Lord, was somehow a sharper passer than MSU dropback star Jeff Smoker. Add all that up, and it's a wonder MSU lost only 17-3 in front of 56,229 fans at the Alamodome. Lord and running back Cory Ross wore out the Spartans' defense, and the Spartans' offense was suffocated like no other time this season - making for a disappointing end to Smoker's MSU career. Ross finished the game with 138 yards rushing. The loss wraps up a surprising 8-5 season under first-year coach John L. Smith. That's just the sixth season of eight wins or more in the past 37, and it comes on the heels of last season's 4-8 finish. For all its wondrous success, it ended bitterly. MSU needed a near-perfect game Monday, and it simply didn't happen. The Spartans had a slew of personal fouls - on an evening filled with hostility between the players - and missed on a few rare downfield passing opportunities. MSU still had a chance late, driving to Nebraska's 20 with six minutes to play. But a personal foul on receiver Aaron Alexander cost the Spartans 15 yards. Smoker threw a wobbly interception - his second of three on the night - on the next play, ending any hopes of a comeback. Words were exchanged early and often, most notably between MSU defensive end Greg Taplin and the assortment of Huskers he pointed his finger at before kickoff. But Nebraska came out and gave the first shot, a sack of Smoker on the game's first play from scrimmage. Defensive end Trevor Johnson burned MSU tackle Steve Stewart on the play and dropped Smoker for a loss of eight. Two plays later, Johnson came up the middle and got Smoker again, this time for a loss of nine, and it looked like a long night might be in store for the Spartans' offensive line. Third stringer Sean Poole started at left tackle in place of starter Stefon Wheeler and backup Gordon Niebylski, both of whom were injured. Eric "the Red"

  21. Pelini: program shut down until coach is named ERIC OLSON Associated Press SAN ANTONIO - Interim Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday the Nebraska football program is essentially in a shutdown mode until a permanent coach is named. Pelini and Nebraska's assistant coaches are awaiting a decision by athletic director Steve Pederson, who fired Frank Solich on November 29. "They are all pretty much unemployed now," Pelini said of himself and the rest of the staff. Pelini, who led the No. 22 Huskers to a 17-3 win over Michigan State in Monday night's Alamo Bowl, did not rule out looking for another job now that the bowl game is over. When Pederson named Pelini interim head coach, he said Pelini would serve through the bowl game. "I've got to make sure my family is taken care of," Pelini said. Pelini also said he was not in negotiations with Pederson and that he had been given no indication when the search for a new coach would end. Pederson has refused to comment on the search, which he is conducting by himself. Asked how long he was willing to wait for a possible job offer from Pederson, Pelini said he did not have a time table. Pelini brushed aside talk that he would be a second-choice selection if he were hired now. It had been widely reported that Pederson may be trying to land a coach with NFL experience. "There are a lot of second choices that do pretty well," Pelini said.
  22. WASHINGTON -- The Redskins announced this afternoon that Steve Spurrier has resigned as coach after two losing seasons. Or did he? Shortly after the announcement, in a cellphone conversation, Spurrier told The Washington Post that he did not quit. "I have not resigned. I've got a representative looking into some issues but I have not resigned," Spurrier told The Post. "If they say that I have, that is not true. I'm not sure it is heading in that direction right now. We are seeing where it goes but I have not resigned." Spurrier called Redskins owner Dan Snyder on Tuesday morning and offered his resignation, according to team spokesman Karl Swanson. "It was totally unexpected," Swanson said, and Snyder accepted it with "much regret." Spurrier's replacement would be the fifth head coach since Snyder bought the team in 1999. If he resigns without some sort of exit deal, Spurrier, who had three years remaining on his contract at a total of $15 million, will get none of that money. However, it was reported earlier today that the Redskins will cover the former coach's moving expenses, if he resigns. And, if he resigns without an agreement, Spurrier cannot coach in the league for the next three years unless a future NFL employer is willing to give the Redskins compensation, in the form of draft picks, cash, or both. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1696792

  24. Evridge: Waiting Word on NU Coaching Situation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick Shaw Huskers Illustrated Versatile quarterback Allan Evridge celebrated his eighteenth birthday in late June by making a verbal commitment to the Nebraska coaches. Now...six months later, is the 6-foot-1, 205-pound quarterback out of Papillion High in Omaha, Nebraska still solid in his pledge to the Cornhuskers? According to his mother, Lori, that question won’t be answered until Nebraska announces its new head coach. "Allan visited Kansas State earlier this month and really enjoyed it," Mrs. Evridge said. "He took in a couple of practices while he was down there and really came away with a positive impression of the Kansas State football program. He likes the way that the coaches take players like Ell Roberson...who are mediocre passers...and make them better passers." "To be honest, Allan is going back and forth right now (between Nebraska and Kansas State). He has a really good relationship with Kansas State quarterback’s coach Del Miller. He thinks that Coach Miller (KSU) and Coach Gill (Nebraska) are both very trustworthy and honest men." Lori Evridge admitted that her son has been tempted to pledge to the Wildcats over the past couple of weeks, but said that he really wants to see how the Nebraska coaching situation unfolds before changing his plans. "He loves Nebraska and wants to see what happens with the coaching decision," Mrs. Evridge said. "He sees some of the names that are being thrown out there as head coach possibilities and he gets excited. Other times, he gets a little bit nervous, as he doesn’t want to lost a spot at Kansas State if things don’t work out at Nebraska." "Kansas State told him last weekend that they were only going to take two quarterbacks. He was under a lot of pressure to commit to Kansas State to ensure a spot there...and he didn’t do it. We pray that whoever comes to Nebraska will be a good fit for Allan. He doesn’t even know if the new coach is going to want him. Right now, we are just waiting...we don’t want to make any rash moves." Lori Evridge said that Allan had some reservations earlier in the season about how he be utilized as a quarterback in the Nebraska system. She said that a meeting with then head coach Frank Solich and Turner Gill helped to calm his concerns. "Allan had some questions he wanted to ask the coaches about the style of offense that they planned to run in the future," Mrs. Evridge said. "He realizes that, unlike high school, with college you can have somewhat of a say in what kind of offense you’ll be playing in." "He met with Coach Gill and Coach Solich and both of them reassured Allan that they planned to open up the offense in the future. They told him that they ‘had to open it up’. They admitted that the old way they did things at Nebraska won’t work in this day in age. After meeting with those two...it totally squelched our desire to even visit Kansas State. But not long after that, Solich was fired, and we figured that Allan better keep his options open." Lori Evridge said she was surprised to find out that other parents share the same anxiety as her family does of finding out who the new coach of Nebraska is going to be. "We were at an awards banquet last weekend where a lot of the top players in the area attended," Evridge said. "Seth Olsen, Andy Christensen, Clay Sievers, Mike Huff, Cortney Grixby...and their parents were all there. I think all of those kids want to play together at Nebraska...but they want to know who’s going to be there. Recruiting is in a quiet period now until early January. We’re all hoping to hear some news from Steve Pedersen very soon." Lori Evridge said that she believes that Nebraska coaches realize that a decommitment or two could happen with a coaching change and are doing what they can to plan ahead for that possibility. "We know that Nebraska brought Chris Owens (out of California) in for a visit a couple of weeks back," Mrs. Evridge said. "The same way that Allan has to protect himself...Nebraska has to do the same. We realize that." "Personally, I hope it all works out with Nebraska. I was telling my husband that I look a lot better in red than I do in purple (chuckle). At the same time, Allan has to do what’s best for him...and we’ll support him whatever he decides. We just hope that Nebraska names a head coach before things get down to the wire. There is only one more month until signing day."
