Just my $.02 but here's why I think Diaco has a point.  This is Taylor's big run right before halftime.  Wiscy comes out in 11 personell (1 back, 1 TE), but instead of being in-line, Fumagali is split out in a two point stance.  We went with a four lineman front here, but for some reason we called the strength opposite of Fumagali.

Based on how the play unfolds, it seems we would have been in better position with the strength called to Fumagali, instead of away from him.  Having the defensive tackle on the play side lined up on the outside shoulder of the guard (3-technique) , instead of shaded over the center, could have potentially forced Taylor to cut the play back, or bounce it outside where we had extra defenders.

    Pre Snap Wide

    Pre Snap Tight

Shifting Thomas and Davis each one man over to the left would have put us in a better position.  I'm hoping this is one of the mistakes Diaco was referring to.  Typically this is how four man fronts are called, with the three technique to the TE side. Fumagali being split out may have been a reason for the strength being called away, or it could have just been mis-read.  Either way, we would have been in a much stronger position to be successful had it been called the other way.

Ball is snapped, defense starts to flow, Thomas #97 was orignally lined up on the outside shouler of the center, and the center is starting to cross his face, leaving Thomas in the wrong gap.

    VZvb20M.jpg

Weber #49 reads run and attacks the guard to fit in the B gap. Meanwhile Thomas #97 has been out gapped, and is now fighting to get back across the centers face.

Thomas is never able to get back to his gap, Taylor hits the hole with Dedric young being the only player left on the second level, but he’s cut off by the tackle and not able to get to the ball.   Taylor is now 1on 1 with Williams #24

    QQCPwCQ.jpg

Already at a severe disadvantage, Williams takes a poor angle, and gets beat

And it's off to the races from there.

I do believe there may be some merit to what Diaco had to say.  If we had the three technique to the TE side on this play, I do believe Taylor would have been forced to either cut back or bounce to the outside, either of those options would have most likely led to him beong stopped at some point prior to reaching the end zone.  But instead, he was able get through the hole and to the third level of the defense WITHOUT EVER MAKING A SINGLE CUT!!  He literally ran at the same angle until he reached the sideline, that certainly didn't do Williams any favors.

We certainly still have issues on D.  Mid way through the third we were out of gas up front, and Wiscy just had their way with us from that point.  But it's definitely a different ball game if it's 10-7 at halftime with Nebraska having the momentum.

    +1 Very solid breakdown and

I agree with what Diaco was saying regarding play set up with alignment and run fits and appreciate he didn't blame players and tried to provide some encouragement.

Also, the game would've been much different if it had been 10-7 UWor even 10-3 Neb (taking away the pick 6 and adding the Drew Brown FG) at half and the 2nd half would've gone much differently.

  2. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but are all these Frost believers aware of his offense? I have a feeling some of these Frosters are the same ones criticizing our current offense for throwing too much.

I think he is going to be a solid coach, wherever he ends up at, but lets not blindly proclaim him as the Neb football savior based on name alone. If we ditch Riley, we need to make sure we find the right coach so we aren't doing this again in 3 years.

  3. I know everyone is a little drunk and has their own biases but firing anyone at this point would make us the laughing stock of college football. I know most of the posts here are tongue in cheek but this is a bad look and we are better than this.

  4. The offense looked solid. Outside of some iffy play calling on the last couple drives and some bad plays from the right side of the Oline, I was very pleased.

The defense wasn't near as bad as some make it out to seem. Yes we gave up a lot of yards but none of those came on big plays. We played our defense to stop the run, prevent big plays in the passing game and force them to move down the field with the short passing game. Could the CBs have gotten off blocks better and not been playing off coverage, could our open field tackling been a little better? Sure but it's the first game of the year and I'm willing to allow our staff to fix these flaws before throwing in the towel.

  5. So in the offseason there were some complaining that Riley/Langs don't run the ball enough. Then in camp some complained that we must not have good RBs because there was going to be a committee.

Then in the first game, we have a RB run 31 times and almost reach 200 yards. However, some people still complain.

    Classic.

I didn't know meniscus repair took that long to come back from

This. Makes me wonder if there was a little more damage in the knee.

Had meniscus surgery in the spring after my freshman year in college and was back to full football activities and lifting in a month.

All depends on where in the meniscus, type of tear and how big it was. But this had to be a good sized tear though.

Would rather have a lower rated 6'7 OT prospect with good athleticism than the higher rated 6'4 OT prospect that will just end up being a guard or center.

Also for those that are complaining about not going after the highest rated prospects, last year we spent significant time going after Sarell and Filiaga and missed out and the board was complaining we didn't have any back ups.

Cav has been an above average recruiter, just have to wait and see if he can develop them.

    Please elaborate on this.
Farniok, Jaimes were two solid OTs that Cav did a good job with, pretty sure Farniok even cited his relationship with Cav as the X factor.

I also think Wilson is a good example of talent evaluation, I think it's pretty clear he deserved a higher rating and we did a good job of identifying him.

And yeah keeping Raridon was an easy job but still not a gimme.

All I'm saying is O-line is arguably the toughest to evaluate and recruit, I think Cav has done a decent job identifying some underrated talent (Wilson and Jaimes). I'm not sold on how well he will be able to develop them but I think we have better pieces here than when he got here.

So you are impressed by 3 guys out of 4 classes?

    Raridon was a gimme:

"So you commit, then the coaching staff got fired. What was going through your mind when that happened?"

"It didnt really bother me, to be honest. I had a feeling that could happen either before I got there or soon after I get there, so I tried to make my decision based on other aspects of the school and not the coaching staff."

I was asked to elaborate on why I think Cav is a decent recruiter. I listed 3 players where I thought he did a solid job. Does that mean I think he is the greatest OL coach in college football? No, it just means that IMO he isn't near as bad as everyone here is making him out to be. Like I also stated above, it'll all depend on how he develops the talent he has acquired.

Put down the pitch forks and give the man a chance to do his job. Riley has shown that he is willing to make changes when someone isn't getting the job done and that hasn't happened yet.

Anyone know anything about Kearney Catholic's Matt Masker? Sam was impressed at FNL

Two quarterbacks Council Bluffs Lewis Centrals Max Duggan and Kearney Catholics Matt Masker didnt miss much of a beat.

Masker, a 2018 prospect, is a little shorter than Duggan, but he throws the ball well. He has a fluid motion and throws with pace, before a receiver finishes his break. I know its a camp setting, but Ive watched a lot of in-state quarterbacks throw in recent years scholarship guys and walk-ons alike. Masker, at least in a camp, threw as well as or better than any of them. In some cases, Masker is well ahead of quarterbacks youd heard much more about before their senior years. If he doesnt go FCS, hes going to walk on at some FBS program and make some coach pretty happy.

Our Super Six is pretty close to set because there are so many FBS scholarship guys in the state. Two of them Cam Jurgens and Masry Mapieu are committed to Nebraska already. But Masker, without even an FCS offer to this point, may belong in that top six. If he played Class A in Omaha say, at Bellevue West or Omaha North I dont think thered be much question about how good he is.

Can't remember where I heard it but I thought I heard we might try and take this guy as our "QB" in the class as a walk on. Would be pretty happy if that was the case.
  11. Clouse said the staff is preparing as if he might not be making it to campus

If you're basing this info on the interview on 1620 this afternoon then I'd say you may have misinterpreted what Clouse was saying. What I got from that was Clouse said Blades was not here yet and has some online classes to finish up, which Clouse said he expected to get done. However, he did say that perhaps the reason we are staying in contact with a lot of 2018 DBs may be due to wanting to have a replacement ready if Blades doesn't make it.
  12. I think the turning point of the day was the 3rd inning against Iowa. We had 1st and 3rd, 0 outs followed by schrieber K, Miller K and Alvarado fly out. Iowa turns around and gets a lead off home run in the bottom of the inning.

If we could've just gotten 1 run on the board and taken the lead early I think that game plays out much differently.

  13. So nobody is still worried about giving up so many late inning runs? Yes, a win is a win, but the fact its happened so often this year is a trend and has to be worrisome.

Very concerned, especially considering our bullpen depth is pretty shallow. But a win is a win, I suppose.
  14.

So we are at 82. Let's pretend we don't land any grad transfers or any new recruits for this season.

Tyler Hoppes is going to get a scholly for this season.

Luke McNitt might if he is going to be the starting FB.

They are both Seniors, and would put us at 84.

Reimers is getting a scholarship, you can bet your bottom on it.

He is a junior, and would put us at 85 for the season. His wouldn't come off the books, unless we were to only offer him a 1 year scholly, which I would doubt considering he is going to play quite a bit.

This means we would have 14 open scholarships without attrition, and we could sign up to 17... Which Riley didn't do last season.

Now, looking at possible attrition, since that's what some are hoping so we can sign 20. (Not sure how you can predict guys that might leave, but I'll try) We would need 3 to leave, just to be able to get to 20. Also, those 3 would have to either leave during or before the season, or well before NSD, so that we could actual sign a player for their scholarship.

Sedrick King? Possibly a Grad Transfer if he doesn't get much PT this year. Not sure on his graduation requirements to be able to do so, just would assume he is close.

Jalen Barnett? Possibly Transfer, hasn't gotten any opportunities for whatever reason it is.

MIkale Wilbon? Grad Transfer possibly if he doesn't get a fair shake this season?

I feel like I'm really reaching with those predictions. I'm sure we will have some sort of attrition, just not sure who and not sure if it will amount to 3 players or not.

Time will tell. I can tell you for a fact that we will sign between 15-20 players though.

Pure speculation of candidates for leaving but here's my list of possibilities:

Brokop: The coaches are ready to show him the door.

King: Agree with you. Could look for bigger role.

Darlington: Loves the program. But I wondering if he'd grad transfer to see the field at a lessor school?

Avery Anderson: Just can't seem to gain ground anywhere. 3rd string now and Blades, Bookie, etc are joining the fold during the remainder of his time here.

Decker: He's a good player and I hope it's not the case but he has some health problems that could be a wildcard in his career.

I'm thinking we may lose one from the safety group. With Dismuke, Butler, Domann, Reed all fighting for time, wouldn't be surprised if we lost one. Big fan of Domann and Butler, hope we can hold on to those two.
