I dont know I know the Buback family Chris is head of FCA- done some camps with him But Ive never talked to him about his sons college choice LC often times plays kids out of position to max out their team I dont know enough about him to say he is a great player or not What I hear from Jareds words is maybe he didnt feel wanted- like they really felt he was the right fit, That maybe NU was just honoring the commitment of the previous coaching staff. JMO- have no inside info at all.

I dont want to get into a fake "debate" about who the top 15 are when many wont admit Meyer and Saban are far ahead of the pack, are first ballot Hall of Fame guys. Pretty pointless That has been done to death So the best we could do was what the 41st ranked College football coach with barely a winning college record? Ok, got it, NU is the 41st best College Football program out there, Man the facilities, support and $$ must stink here

We are top 5 in all time wins 300+ sellouts Great facilities Good money Still a "brand" name with many Excellent academic support Clean image Consistent 9 or 9+ win seasons even with average coaching staff- which means we arent great, but you arent starting at the bottom or even the middle Coaching in a "winnable" conference, only one OSU really as any bully standing in the way It is a top 15 job, that should have a top 15 coach coaching it Riley isnt a top 30 coach, let alone top 15 Im rooting for him, but he isnt an upper echelon coach in the eyes of most

I dont think so There is a reason he makes the $$ he does- guaranteed success He and Meyer are absolutley obsessed with winning and have the leadership and TEACHING skills to make it happen no matter where they coach in College Most have no clue what a great teacher he is- watched him coach DBs hands on. You were wrong about him again He did really well at NC State- where he turned them into a consistent winner WHen you take over bottom dwellers like LH did over and over again, you build the wins and competitiveness to the point where they are competitive and in MUCH better shape than when they started. He did that at W&M, Minny and SC and of course at ND, Arkansas and NC State as well. Had he stayed on at Minny, W&M ( why would he do that) or SC- they would have been consistent winners too. At Minny he took over a 1 win team 2 years later then finish 7-5 and are just 3 snaps away from being 10-2 barely losing to Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan State Quite a turnaround almost anyone would be very impressed with that jmfb my whole point in my post was that you pick out 4 great coaches, and they are great coaches, I am not debating that and then say they won at every place the coached. I was pointing out that Lou had losing records at x and y locations. The point was that you are always so smug and condescending about things. You think your opinion matters more than anyone's because you coach football. I coached FB for 22 years straight and my opinion is no better than anyone else. Lou Holtz was a great coach, but he did not have a winning record everywhere he coached. Oh and you win I forgot to put NC State in my post. You are right! Just stating the facts Holtz did turnaround programs- HUGE turnarounds No one would suggest any of his college coaching stints were failures in any sense of the word. As to opinions anyone including my little girl can have one. The difference is my opinions on football are based on what I know about the game, hers are based on what team colors her mood and which mascots are more interesting and maybe her experience of watching 2-3 games on TV. Not sure those opinions are of the same value. Just like mine wouldn't have the same value of a Tom Osborne You just proved my point by comparing everyone's opinion to a little girls. For example I would take Damon Bennings opinion over everyones here as well as any columnist/reporter. Because he understands the game at a very detailed level, has the facts, spends time with the team, practices, gets insight from others attending, is former player. He has also been consistently right about almost all of what he has talked about. He lays out his facts and logic really well. So Im taking his opinions with a great degree of confidence. His opinion is more valueable than my own, foam finger guy or my daughter. Same goes for others. If you feel that shoe fits you, that wasn't the intention, but go for it It is what it is Not everyone has the same football knowledge as a little girl, that wasn't how it was said. But that hasn't stopped you before.

Are the QBs at Georgia Tech not QBs because they only throw the ball 10 times a game? Was Tommie Frazier not a QB because he was below average at best when it came to the passing game? And look how that turned out Just like I said it would If OSU was always recruiting kids no one else wanted because of their bad facilities etc and NU got him- NU hasn't had much luck recruiting good QBs for a very long time, What does that say about Stanton? That's why he is where he is

Well Saban never had a losing season Riley did Saban had a 10 win season at MSU Riley didn't at OSU Saban turned around a bad LSU program and won MANY League Championships and even a National Title- you forgot about LSU I guess Riley Hasn't won anything And Saban did the very same thing at BAMA Very little in common other than both coached at "weak" places But Saban turned it around- no losing seasons and left it on "top" with a 10 win season The next guy up didn't do so well The guy that took Rileys place did much better than Riley So not exactly the same track record there I hope Riley can make it work here, but his track record makes me very sceptical

His last team- the last year of the 5 year plan team beat Florida in the Outback Bowl When you take over a weak program it's one step at a time and at the end of the day, his teams won consistently Had he stayed they would have been a consistent Big 10 Dynasty, just like he did at his other stops At LSU and Bama

Facts are easily obtained, but questions of Riley's fit as HC at Nebraska are hypothetical no matter how you slice it. And while previous W/L records are simple and straight-forward, they don't appear to be a good predictor. Hoke had a good record before going to Michigan. RichRod looked good before going to Ann Arbor. And looked bad before getting to Tucson but is doing very well for the Wildcats. Pete Carroll wasn't good for the Patriots but has been exceptional at USC and Seattle. I thought Saban would have done a lot better in the NFL. There are also lots of W/L records that translated into success as well. Urban at Florida and again at tOSU is probably the best example. My point is that Riley's W/L record at Oregon St. doesn't mean much to how he'll perform at NU. You can keep presenting it as a fact, but it's not convincing evidence in the discussion of how Riley will perform at NU. The NFL is a totally different animal= if you want to add the NFL then you have to look at Rileys failure at SD then as well College football is a much different equation Rich Rod was sabotaged at Michigan- he would have been successful there had they left him alone Great book there about it, 3 and out. Friends at Michigan verified, very accurate Lots of great coaches won at every college stop Bear Bryant Urban Meyer Nick Saban Lou Holtz Riley- jury is out Rich Rod is a College great coach and will have a great career Past results DO matter Consistent Results either verify what you are doing makes sense, or they dont The best are going to win at every stop, no excuses So Nick Saban won at every stop? You must have forgot his stops at MSU and the Dolphins. And don't use that bullsh#t of " Well he went 9-2 his final year at MSU" When Saban took over MSU they were 0-11 They had winning record in his year 1 there He was 34-24 there- never had a losing season. Last season 10-2 So yes he did win at MSU and as soon as he left they went back to losing again Pretty good coach For the 10th time NFL has no bearing on the college game- doesn't matter. You were wrong about him again He did really well at NC State- where he turned them into a consistent winner WHen you take over bottom dwellers like LH did over and over again, you build the wins and competitiveness to the point where they are competitive and in MUCH better shape than when they started. He did that at W&M, Minny and SC and of course at ND, Arkansas and NC State as well. Had he stayed on at Minny, W&M ( why would he do that) or SC- they would have been consistent winners too. At Minny he took over a 1 win team 2 years later then finish 7-5 and are just 3 snaps away from being 10-2 barely losing to Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan State Quite a turnaround almost anyone would be very impressed with that jmfb my whole point in my post was that you pick out 4 great coaches, and they are great coaches, I am not debating that and then say they won at every place the coached. I was pointing out that Lou had losing records at x and y locations. The point was that you are always so smug and condescending about things. You think your opinion matters more than anyone's because you coach football. I coached FB for 22 years straight and my opinion is no better than anyone else. Lou Holtz was a great coach, but he did not have a winning record everywhere he coached. Oh and you win I forgot to put NC State in my post. You are right! Just stating the facts Holtz did turnaround programs- HUGE turnarounds No one would suggest any of his college coaching stints were failures in any sense of the word. As to opinions anyone including my little girl can have one. The difference is my opinions on football are based on what I know about the game, hers are based on what team colors her mood and which mascots are more interesting and maybe her experience of watching 2-3 games on TV. Not sure those opinions are of the same value. Just like mine wouldn't have the same value of a Tom Osborne

Lets remember for a moment that he was coaching a consistently decent team at a historically bad place in a clearly competetive league. His records weren't why he was given lifer status, his results were. A 9-4 record where we get blown out by Wisconsin, embarassed by tOSU and slapped at home by NW is drastically different than a 9-4 season where we lose by a couple points to Wisconsin, almost upset tOSU and smack the crap outta NW. The record is secondary to being able to be proud of our seasons. We have no clue what is going to happen in the next couple seasons but Riley is already winning big at recruiting. If we aren't competing for a conference title in a couple years I'll be surprised. And by competing I don't mean simply showing up to the game, I mean remembering that a Division Title merely gets you there then you have to earn the crown. Thats something Bo couldn't do. Bring us a trophy back to Lincoln and the Jury won't be out will it? Im not sure a 3-9 record with the only really close loss was to Sacramento State counts as a "decent" team. Same for some of those 5-7 seasons. As to historically bad- yes it was, but then when he left Dennis Erickson stepped right in and did even better. It will be interesting to see how OSU does in Rileys absence. Last time he left, they did great, best season in school history. It was Bo's time to go, Im glad he's gone. He wasn't getting any closer to winning titles at this point Can this guy do it? No one knows and he doesn't have the track record of a Meyer, Saban or anything close that says, yes we can depend on a year 3-4 title run. He's never won anything. He wins it, and consistently win/ fields competitive teams, not the up and down thing, Im his biggest fan. If Riley does just that SE will officially be the smartest guy in the room. But in all reality SE has no track record of successfully hiring great Head Football coaches so it is a crap shoot.

Did you know he was a bust from the beginning or whatI said here several times that he had accuracy issues, which are the most difficult to fixI also said since he didn't get in at the Spring game until very late and when he did he looked bad meant he wouldn't be playing QB here at NU Several disagreed with that and said all it was going to take was some QB whispering- that his Elite 11 pedigree proved he deserved a shot etc I countered that Harrison Becks QB camp ratings didn't mean much either and that JS wouldn't be taking any QB snaps at NU Long term- Riley will not value or chase down QBs who run well and don't have consistently accurate arms From what I saw he was definitely behind TA, Darlington and Broekemeier. Broekemeier is a much better QB than most are giving credit, he's no Matt Turman, kid can play. Im not impressed with Bush (his tilt on the ball is awkward) or Fyfe, but even at that, being 4th best and not making the 105- he was done a long time ago. Oh so you thought he was a bust in April when four other QBs played in front of him. Wow how observant you are. There's no way you thought he was going to be a bust when he was first recruited.He was a bust when he wasn't even close to catching Fyfe for #2 last yearWhen Riley was named coach and I knew the offense he wanted to run- Stanton wasn't a fit, so last year it was a forgone conclusion He wasn't going to be a "bust" if the type of O we were running favored an athlete playing QB like TM or Stanton. But he couldn't even elevate on the charts for that- let along a Pro Style O. BTW LOTS of guys were still on the Stanton bandwagon- just a couple of weeks ago right here on this forum- "he is an elite 11 guy, all he needs is some more good QB coaching- the QB whisperer can make him into something". I said it was never going to happen, people disagreed Those people were wrong Just curious. If you know the style of offense Mike Riley runs, why did Riley and his staff put the full court press on Stanton when recruiting him coming out of HS???? MR has always run a Pro Style offense, at every stop he's coached at. Thats what he knows and believes in-That's not debateable They don't hit on every recruit- and they do recruit Cali very hard. A .500 program isn't hitting on every recruit- that's what OSU was under Riley. He was on their radar- based on the location and the fact he attended camps/put up some numbers He had the size they like but his accuracy issues meant he wasn't destined to start in DI for anyone running an offense that required a pretty good passing game

At Minny he took over a 1 win team that got outscored 518-181 by 333 points 2 years later then finish 7-5 and are just 3 snaps away from being 10-2 barely losing to Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan State They outscored their opps by 293-240 So a 386 point turnaround- or 32 POINTS per game- one of the biggest in NCAA history Quite a turnaround almost anyone would be very impressed with that
