Alright, party pooper, I'll be more specific. SPH said we need to recruit kids who can compete to start Day 1.

The Huskers have had one true freshman ever start Day 1 - Tyler Moore, and he was a total wuss who transferred.

    Better?

Does it count that Jaimes started 9 games as a true freshman last year and was arguably one of the best on the field?

  2. I think most (including me) predicted around a .500 record this year. I will say right now I was never satisfied by that, but it was the most realistic. With the success that the staff had before coming to Nebraska, I think some were willing to dream for a faster start to the Frost Era. After the last two weeks, it is clear this will be a process, so as a fan, the best we can do is to stay grounded and evaluate what is in front of us. I like the style of defensive play and that it looks like players have enough ability to play well within the scheme. The problem is there are miscues on critical downs (such as 3rd and longs) that have not got them off the field when they need to be. For the offensive, I will say push. It looked good with Martinez, but that is one game. This game plan against Troy relied on successful play by the OL, and they are the worst group on that side of the ball. ST is bad...coaches need to focus a lot on this (maybe get Lindsay off of PR but I don't know what to do with Lightborn).

  3. There is real potential at every other position on this Husker team, except OL, PR, and punter. I will make a bold prediction that a failure in progress for the Huskers over the next 5 years will be centered around a failure in progress from the OL. Frost's staff needs to be able to actually assess better OL recruits and bring them into the program.

I will say that I am not down on Jaimes. We are also hearing a lot about Wilson but just not seeing a lot of PT.

    Now that I’m sober....

     LB play is really good.

    DL play is pretty decent

    DB play is still trash

    ST play is still 450

Washington is the best RB but teams are going to figure out that he cuts to the outside a lot and be prepared for that

Bunch is not a good QB.  Not to say in a couple more years of training he won’t be. But he isn’t now and people need to realize Frost and Verduzco are not the miracle QB developers many have made them out to be.

The OL sucked from the first snap.  Bench them all and play someone else.  Can’t get much worse than that

Receivers need to help their QB.  It’s the only way we will possibly see even 1 win this year

These coaches will not clean up penalties. It’s not what they do.

These coaches took a lot of public shots at the last coaching staff.  Everyone loved it.  What did they get from it?

This is a pretty good take. I would put a little more on the LB and say they had a good game but some costly mistakes.

The only thing I disagree with is the QB discussion. Frost made it clear in his post-game presser that they designed a really conservative offensive game plan. All week, Frost and Austin were saying the game will rest on the OL's shoulders not the QB. In the first quarter, this played out to be true. Bunch was really only asked to hand the ball off with little RPO. The game plan seemed to be one-dimensional where Nebraska was asking their OL to beat Troy's DL. It did not. Now, Bunch may not be an electric QB, but he was not asked to be.

I think Frost took a calculated risk to come out with this game plan. The OL could not do its assignment, and that lead to the offense looking inept.

I havent seen the Burt Reynolds version(Because I aint as old as balls) and I had no idea if he drilled the ref in the balls like Sandler did, hence the reference.

And guys.. It is not up for discussion. His nickname is A-Magic in honor of his dad T-Magic.

Closing time is a terrible nickname.

Short term for the coaches should have figured out how not to go from 4 scholarship QB’s in December to only 1

There is no evidence that Vedral will be good.

Long term, our next scholarship QB may not even play QB in college

The next one is still 2 years away from getting to campus

    Its a problem

I think Frost should have contacted Goodell and the NCAA to block players from leaving early for the NFL draft or to transfer from a team. Then, we would have Lee, O'Brien, and Gebbia still, and everyone would be talking about how perfect those three are for this system. Also, would it kill Frost to recruit 2-3 QBs every cycle? I mean, who thinks we need to only recruit 1 QB per cycle anyway? That is a losing strategy. Pile up QBs like corkwood imo.

Frost really has no idea how to develop or manage QBs.

    :D

Hey guys, see the quote from Ryan Held — further down from the Benhart article — about Greg Bell’s speed. In addition to Frost, he is also saying Bell was running really tight, that he can run faster than he  did against Colorado on that long gain. Held said he was running like a 95-year-old man. See his quote.

Here is a better thread to talk about how "tight" Greg Bell is or isn't. Let's keep this thread about Benhart.

This is possible - well, except for the 95-year-old part.  As I rewatched last night - only got to the first big run so far - it looked like he might have been peeking over his should a lot which slows you down.

But I'm a bit skeptical until I see more.

"Ran too tight" might be code for playing with an injury. Damon Benning has implied several times that Bell has an undisclosed injury which may be affecting his speed. This may be purely speculative, though DB seems close to this staff.

This is all less "creepy" than that reporter's tweet.

    Just so we're clear.

I personally think it is a non-issue. However, I am guessing that some may find it off-putting that he is using his freshman daughter as an unofficial but on-the-record source. My opinion about this is that we have football to talk about, so whatever.

Surely this implies nothing regarding Adrian Martinez. Frost already said he'll be a game-time decision.

53 comes in with a hit well after Martinez is down.

44 has a hold of his leg and continues to twist it well after the whistle.

Saw that during the game and mentioned it to my wife (who was watching the game with me). It appeared after Martinez was down completely, 44 held onto his leg and twisted his knee. It looked like he was trying to injury Martinez intentionally. Not the first time something like this happened in a game, but even as a competitor, you have to draw a line.

Not much to discuss, his height is more of a benefit for the OT position than a disadvantage.

Last year's two All-American OT's were both 6'7 or taller.

In fact there hasn't been a 1st team All American OT shorter than 6'6 the last three years.

Edit: I'd also bet he's much closer to 6'7 as 247 indicates than 6'9 like Rivals does.

Time to get a door frame involved...or maybe a ladder.

So Hoppen is correct in that 100% of guys not finishing out their eligibility is high, if the national average is 50%.

I think the caveat I put on that tweet is really important, though. 100% may jump out at you, but the five guys to focus on after Armstrong (Stanton, Bush, Darlington, O'Brien & Gebbia) were recruited by different coaches for very different schemes.  I didn't include Tanner Lee because he was a transfer, and Hoppen's original stat was recruits. But he's probably worth factoring in, as you mention.

And now he's the #2 guy. He's making progress!  :D

Imo, it makes no sense to ignore who was playing during the time those guys were here. Especially, because the guys that started at QB and finished their careers here were the reason those guys did neither. Also, if you want to get really technical, you have Bunch and Vedral here that are still TBD.

Martinez & Kellogg were recruited before Armstrong. Fyfe was with Armstrong, but not a starter (pretty sure he's talking about starters anyway).

The guys Hoppen is talking about are Johnny Stanton, AJ Bush & Zack Darlington, Patrick O'Brien and now Gebbia.

Stanton, Bush, Darlington, O’Brien, and Gebbia were never starters. Heck , most never played. That is why I wrote my list (starters/major contributors only).

If you don’t start at QB, there is a high chance of transferring. Look at other schools. A quick google search shows that 50% of college QBs transfer. Which is the other point I was making regarding how easy it is to find this information where you don’t have to say “don’t know about other schools”.

    https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/signing-day-recruits-quarterback-transfer-clemson-hunter-johnson-alabama-tua-tagovailoa-michigan-dylan-mccaffrey-013017

Only Lee did not finish his eligibility at Nebraska in recent years, and he elected to go into the NFL draft not transfer. That’s 4 of the last 10 Nebraska QB who finished here (5 if you count Lee who did not transfer). That puts Nebraska in line with the rest of college football.

Something to point out about this:  We're on our third Head Coach in that span.

Taylor Martinez, Kellogg, Fyfe, and Armstrong were starting QBs in the last 5 years. All finished at Nebraska. Hoppen may want to keep reporting to real reporters. “Not sure how that looks compared to other schools”. Case in point.
