  1. Just a few things:

Dixon will not redshirt IMO. Unless he completely can't grasp the defense, I think he could challenge for a starting job or at least provide productive minutes.

Gilleylen - Will NOT be moved from WR. He is a physical freak and IMO the most underrated recruit from last year. He runs a sub-11.0 100 and is well built. I could easily see him contributing on ST's and perhaps even getting some routes.

Townsend - He is going to play base DE. He is a lot like Dixon, if he can pick up the defense, I think he could start/see lots of time. I believe he is in the same boat as Zach Lee (4 years to play 3) but I think he will play right away.

Of the others, I will almost guarantee Paul and Castile gets some PT. How they adjust will constitute how much.

  2. Well Ohio State drew 75,301 for some damn reason (I was at Lowe's with everyone else in town), and they didn't even open the ugly metal stands in the South end zone:

Numbers don't lie: 75,301 say spring game really matters

I don't know how you determine which city deserves to be called the college football capital of the world.

Maybe there's an American Idol-type television show that lists phone numbers to call in your vote, a show on which a Simon Cowell-wannabe is berating Bloomington, Ind., and Starkville, Miss., but probably not.

So we're left with the usual means to settle what has been an ongoing dispute for years, pointing out the flaws of other cities who claim the title (Does anybody actually live in Lincoln, Neb.?), citing arcane statistics (Columbus sells twice as many No. 1 foam fingers as does South Bend, Ind.) and finally, just trying to drown out the other guys.

But now there's also this: 75,301.

That's the number of people who were willing to pay what seems an exorbitantly high price -- $5 plus the incalculable cost of a beautiful spring Saturday afternoon -- to watch an offseason football scrimmage yesterday in Ohio Stadium.

"It just reminds me of why I came here," junior flanker Brian Robiskie said. "I was driving over this morning through campus and I just kind of soaked it in. There were some people tailgating and it's nine o'clock in the morning. They were getting ready for the spring game."

That kind of thing isn't done in a lot of places where college football is considered very, very important. Southern California drew 15,000 to its spring game this year. Tennessee had a crowd of 17,409. LSU drew 14,375. West Virginia, which had the misfortune of having its game in a snowstorm, counted 3,000.

The only place that outdrew Ohio State this spring was Alabama, which put 92,138 in the stands yesterday to finally get a look at Nick Saban, the coach the Crimson Tide is paying $4 million a year to save the program. And there's another side to that story that also bears repeating: Admission was free.

Personally, I have never understood this. The Scarlet-Gray scrimmage doesn't seem like even a distant cousin to one of those Ohio State-Michigan games that are about as good as it gets in any sport. To compare real college football to this is like comparing the NCAA men's basketball finals to a pickup game in your driveway.

But to have more than 75,000 people pay $5 to see it says a lot about how much people care about college football around here, and yes, maybe just a little about their sanity.

Last year, the spring game drew 64,000, which was the most ever. But last year, the Buckeyes returned Troy Smith and Ted Ginn Jr., were coming off a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and were already being billed as the likely preseason No. 1.

Logically, the crowd this year should have been smaller. A 41-14 loss to Florida in the national championship game left Ohio State fans with a football hangover that they were still feeling when the Buckeyes lost to the Gators again three weeks ago in the men's basketball final.

Yet the fans still streamed through the stadium gates, apparently eager to see for themselves which of the three green quarterbacks -- Todd Boeckman, Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton -- they think should replace Smith and why.

But is a chance to tell your pal at the office water cooler or the gang on the Internet message boards who you think should start really worth saying goodbye to a beautiful spring Saturday? Probably only in places in the running to be called college football's capital.

Lincoln, Neb., is one and it showed why again, drawing what had been the biggest spring crowd this year before yesterday, 54,288. But that figure is down from past years, maybe because Lincoln hotels require a two-night minimum on spring game weekend.

Conversely, Columbus' "capital" stock is up. In the past dozen years or so, Ohio State football has been riding a tsunami of momentum and interest seems to be increasing proportionately.

Sure, the Buckeyes got drubbed by the Gators for the national title, but there's always this:

Florida's spring game drew only 47,000.

Are they serious with the stat about the rooms or is that a joke?

I know the Embassy Suites requires a 2-night stay on home game weekends, so it wouldn't surprise me if they did it for the spring game as well.

  3. My thoughts (and only my thoughts) are that we sit #3 right now behind OU and USC. The one thing we are doing a good job of is actively recruiting his brother as well. I've heard they really want to play together. OU has formed a really good relationship with Arthur, but they are stacked at LB. Also, they have 2 very high rated RB's and this may impact Arthur's brother, who is also a RB. USC is USC and pretty much sells itself. It is the Nebraska of the mid 90's with a much better location. Of course they are stacked at every position as well.

We certainly aren't out of it for them, but we aren't in the lead either. It would be an absolutely amazing recruiting job to get these guys, but pulling Marlon out of Cali (with a USC offer) was pretty amazing as well.

  4. I don't think the Prater brothers will get NU offers.

Kyle on the other hand would be an awesome get. I believe he has us, OU, and LSU as his favorites. His film is extremely impressive and is at a position of need ILB. I would love to land him.

  5. I haven't heard anything, but I think he would be great as an OLB. Get him in the 230-240 range and keep his speed and you have a monster LB. Also, I like our depth at safety alot more than that at LB, so i think if he can add the weight and keep the speed, he will probably end up at LB.

  6. I read a report on ESPN today that said there is division in the locker-room.

It seems that chuckd has been lashing out at forrealbigredfan and other team mates over posting issues like positivity, Callihan criticism, Keller's popularity and the special teams of the posting board; grammar.

Although there is still time before the beginning of the season, if this rift isn't fixed the Huskes might be in trouble this year.

    It's Callahan. ;)

    :cheers

  7. "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" reported that Keller isn't well liked by the team and that they would rather have Ganz start. Keller is a little too "take charge" while Ganz is one of the boys. If that is the case then it's no wonder why we can't finish in the top 25. If you don't like someone gettting on your ass a little bit then you are soft.

If that is where you get the majority of your Husker information it's no wonder you act like you do. You bring nothing to this board and your constant negativity is really pathetic. I'm all for differing viewpoints, but you dont' have a viewpoint, you have an agenda. It's obvious and it's pathetic. Don't you have better things to do with your time than get on the internet and slam everything about the current Nebraska Football program?

Sence you know everything there is about the program why don't you tell me where I should get "real" Husker information. Forgive me from getting some of my info from the independent, impartial media. Maybe I should only use the information supplied to us by the athletic department and the Husker Sports Network because they don't have an agenda or credibility issues right?

I do have an agenda-talking the Huskers. I know this may shock you but everything is not perfect with the program. Sometimes we have to accept it. Just because you don't like talking about it doesn't mean that it's not so. Hiding from it doesn't make it go away.

yea he told me that a while ago to he is a jerk

Ok, you call me a jerk so I will correct your grammar (which is atrocious by the way).

First of all, capitalization is your friend.

Yea, he told me that a while ago too In this case you are using the word "too" to mean "as well" in which case you would use "too" not "to".

Also, periods are a great way to let people know when you end a sentence. Then, after the period, you could go ahead and capitalize the first word of the next sentence. It would look something like this: too. He is a jerk. (Please notice the period at the end of the sentence.)

Now, I fully realize that grammar smack on a message board is weak, but not only have you started posts saying Callahan can't coach and Pederson should be fired, but you are incoherent at times. You make yourself an easy target because often times people don't even know what you are trying to say.

And just for your records, here's what your post should have looked like:

Yea, he told me that a while ago too. He is a jerk.

  8.

Thank heavens we have those who have nothing better to do with their time than get on the internet and lecture other Husker fans on how to be a "real" Husker fan.

Never mind someone simply commenting on a news report about the team; he had better have a positive commentary, DAMMIT!!

Forgive him, chuckd, some of us didn't get the "True Husker Fan" guidebook. We are learning on the fly...

Wow, why am I not surprised that you would be one to defend him. I have no problem with people that spend time talking about things they enjoy on the internet. However, for the life of me I can't understand why people spend their time bitching about things they don't like. You seem to be in that category as is your pal ForReal. I've went back and looked at posting histories and it's almost funny. It's the same things over and over "fire Callahan he doesn't know how to call plays" Well, not sure if you caught the NFL Network broadcast of the spring game, but if you did it should be quite evident that he knows VERY WELL how to call plays.

If you and the rest of the SP/BC bashers want to cry about not being called "real fans" then how about you do something to show you support the current team/staff in any way. If you admit that you don't support this team, but were fans in the past, that's fine. I guess that makes you formerfans ;)

  9. there are alot of teams in our conference that would love to get 54k in the stands for regular season games. Nothing to worru about.

No kidding. Is there a single other Big 12 North team that averages 54,000+ at their regular season home games? Maybe Mizzou? I'd say 54,000 for a spring game is pretty damn good.

  11. I'm not saying he was right or wrong but I can't believe you guys are killing a Husker apologist like Shatel. I agree, it takes a big man to admit he is wrong.

Shatel a Husker apologist? Wow, that would be like calling you an actual Husker fan. Your hatred towards Nebraska is borderline psychotic. You are either a Solichista of the highest order and for that reason alone hate all things SP/BC. Either that or you are a Sonner, Kitty, etc fan that apparently has enough time to troll other teams sites. I'm hoping for the latter, because it would be great to know you never were really associated with the program to being with.

  12. even though I hate Pederson and Shatel, the security is not about a crazy kid trying to kill a lot of people if a person really wanted to get in the old security guard who is watching price is right could not stop anyone with a gun

I have no idea what you just said.

No kidding. I realize grammar smack is weak, but a period, or any kind of punctuation for that matter would be helpful.

From what I can tell you are saying that the security guard isn't going to do any good if a gunman was to come into the athletic department. That may be true, but it may not be. Perhaps the security guard is armed, perhaps he is close enough to a button to call the police. All I know is while having some kind of security, any kind of security, is better than having none.

Oh, for the record, Shatel sucks :)

  13. It's fair if you define "bust" as not living up to expectations of how high they were drafted.

If you define it as underperforming for really no good reason, then it wouldn't be fair to lump Trev into that group. LP is one of the all-time busts, so much talent, so little brain.

  14. Time won't make much of a difference. It would take an act of god for Murillo to start over Grixby. It's just not in the cards.

Courtney is that you? shouldnt you be at practice learning to look for the ball or taking some HGH to get taller?

Bah. Do you REALLY think Murillo will start over Grix?

    I mean...really?

Keep in mind that Bowman should be back at some point.

Sean Callahan made a comment tonight that Bowman told him that he would be back by August.

    That would be fantastic.

  15. I would wish Joe a lot more luck if he would have been a little classier on his way out of Lincoln. Oh well.

Beck has the physical tools to be a great QB, but he doesn't have the mental side. If he finds it, he could be productive, if he doesn't, he won't.

Dailey just isn't a quarterback. I truly don't think he would have been very effective in any system. He makes bad decisions and just doesn't look comfortable. Decision making isn't something that is easily taught, you either have that ability or you don't, Joe doesn't have it. Again, oh well.

  16. Doak Ostergaurd or how ever you spell it, seemed to feel slighted that Steve P. and Bill C. did not hold a news confrence to honor his years of service and pay him tribute. I dont ever remember Frank doing anything for Milt T. and the other assistant coaches, who gave a hell of alot more to this program then an athletic trainer, and where was T.O."s . loyalty to them that he has so much of know. Many of the players that are now coming out of the woodwork in Doak and Frank"s defence, sure as hell were silent back then while Frank was cutting the legs out from under this program.

    Abso-freaking-lutley

Where is all the uproar when Milt, Darlington, Dan Young, etc were fired? They weren't given a reason either, but apparently Doak (an ankle taper) is somehow more important than these coaches who gave almost their entire careers to the program. And dont' think it's a coinicidence that the same fans who are sticking up for their beloved Doak (whom most probably never heard of before he was fired) are the ones that cruicify Pederson at every step. It has nothing to do with Doak, it has everything to do with trying to justify their hatred of SP. Kind of pathetic if you ask me.

  17. No.

They do plenty of 1's vs 1's in practice, the Spring Game is for the fans. Just think if Keller/Ganz went against the #1 defense and struggled. Message boards, papers would all be in an uproar until the fall that we have no quarterback. Of course rational people realize that one practice cannot tell you enough to judge a player, but if you have been around enough message board (and newspaper columnists) you know there are plenty of irrational people.

Would it make the "game" more competitive? Yes. But one extra practice (in the spring no less) against the 1's isn't going to make that big of a deal. JMO.

  18. Why does everyone think he is going to Iowa? He has stated that he likes NU over Iowa, do you guys think he is lying? Also, the reports of Petito "not liking Callahan" are blown way out of proportion.

I think Fisher is just weighing all his options, but in the end, I expect him to be N.

  19. Thenarse needs one more year of the weight room and experience and he'll be a very good DB. He makes freshman mistakes sometimes.....go figure he's a freshman. But on some plays he excels and just gives you so much much to be impressed with

I agree, he needs to learn to play more under control. He had a couple of whiffs in the spring game, but when he hits you, watch out. If he takes care of the things he needs to improve on, he will be on the field alot this season.

  20. I thought he looked VERY good for a guy that has only been in the system for a couple of months. He will be lightyears ahead of where Jones was at the beginning of next season. He kept up with Purify pretty well, especially considering he had that damn club on his hand. I would not be surprised at all to see him start come fall.

  21. OK, I've been reading about this 'rift' for weeks now. ENOUGH!!! :rant

God I am so sick and tired of all the cryin' and whinin' from FORMER players. 'I don't feel comfortable', 'I don't feel welcome', 'I don't know anyone anymore', whaaa! whaa! whaa! For gods sake, just call the AD, call Coach Callahan and ASK/REQUEST that you want to be at a practice!!! It's not that hard..Really!!! Coach Callahan, I'm sure, will welcome you. No problem.

Who in the hell do these FORMER players think they are??? I swear!!! Coach Callahan is in know way going to know every single former player. Not happening, however, I'm sure he will welcome them with open arms...the former need to quit being dicks because the old school is gone. It needed to be gone. They need to get behind this program, the players and coaches NOW or just fade away and STFU.

If this were a corporation and you were a former employee, you still have to check in at the front would be my guess...

oh yeah, Tom Osborne DOES NOT WALK ON WATER AND HE IS NOT GOD AND HE IS NOT NEBRASKA FOOTBALL!!! I'm sure I'll catch hell for that one....don't care! :madash

And the AD is more than likely not going anywhere any time soon. You all know he is a Nebraska boy don't you??? I thought that was the prerequisite(sp) for all things NE??? You know, that infamous Nebraska Way...whatever the hell that is.

You all need to get aboard or get off...enough whining! This isn't grade school playgroung time folks!!! :rant

Done now...I've been wanting to get tis ouot for a week now...thanks for the therapy.

And I apologize for the mispelled words...I'm just so sick of hearing/reading about SP this,TO that...UGH...

    Great post!

  22. i can't believe some of you actually thought that this would be a contest. joey may start......if sam breaks a leg.

    I don't know about that.

You're right, if Sam breaks his arm, Joe would start in that instance as well. ;)

  23. Sweet move by the coaching staff having Lucky in late in a meaningless scrimmage to possibly get lost for the year. As thin as we are at RB that is a stupid move.

I don't like taking chances on injuries either however....the scrimmage is meant to simulate a game time enviornment to a degree, works some bugs out, knock some rust off etc etc. I do not think the scrimmage was meaningless as you put it. I am not a coach but I would have left him in as well. Its not the same as being left in a REALl game when your dominating.

Right now we have 10 scholarship WR (including incoming freshmen). Three of those are seniors. That seems like a perfectly reasonable number to me.
