I'm still tripping to '01, aside from Black Friday and the Rose Bowl Beatdown. The point is, we were IN the Rose Bowl - it's the last time we even sniffed greatness. THAT'S what we miss. 14 seasons removed from a Husker team that played for a title, and we're pretty straight-forward people. What worked back then? Well, let's try that.

 

But, I do agree with whomever said we needed a championship-level defense first. That's the dang truth. Osborne did recruit great athletes for offense, but there are several that ended up playing defense (Tony Veland comes to mind) - I think our best athletes most years were Blackshirts. Watching the ASU vs TTU track meet the other night was a glaring example of using all your best athletes on offense.

 

Osborne kept formations and plays relatively simple and straight forward, and recruited to that simple, yet somewhat unique offense. He didn't have to try to get Peyton Manning, Vinny Testeverde, or Drew Bledsoe. He also didn't need to go after Lemming's top 5 receivers, either. Are we going to beat USC, Florida, and Alabama for all these cogs to Riley's machine? Not very often. So how are we going to beat them on the field?

Given where we were a year ago, I am glad that Riley and DL showed they are committed to the run game, and to devising a game plan to exploit their opponent's weakness. Now I don't expect this much rushing in every game, but it's evident they want to establish a strong running game early in the season to help the team gain confidence. With that, the passing game will also open up.

 

I have heard some criticism that our high star WR recruits would not be interested in attending based upon the lack of passes, but it's only one game. Besides, the atmosphere at last night's game was pretty special.

Already looking past WYO?

Well hell, many on the board thought Fresno was going to be a glorified scrimmage, and they gave us a ballgame into the mid3rd quarter. Nothing is a given with this team nor should anyone be overlooked.

 

lol this game was never close. Fresno got lucky and we blew punt protection. This game was just like old Nebraska, run run run run, than in the second half the opposing team is gassed. The announcers even mentioned how the Fresno players were walking to the bench gasping for air, and holding their hips. Our fans might be overlooking Wyoming but this team certainly is not. Bo is gone, we have a coach who gets his team to play hard every week regardless of the team they are playing..

We have to earn a top 25 ranking. If we end up going 3-0 by beating Oregon, then I see us being considered in the top 25.

I say we get ranked at 24 or 25. We put a whooping on Fresno. Too bad it wasn't a hundred points like all you would like lol.

The team played very physical. The only downfall was penalties and a blocked punt. This team will only get better each week, and I expect Coach Riley to get the penalties cleaned up.

 

We're miles ahead of where we ended lasted year but still have some work to do.

 

Might as well just accept that guy's are gking to get penalized and ejected for playing the game correctly.

 

Finally got some 2nd and 3rd team players game experience, the way we want to.

 

Ozigbo runs hard and we've got Tre Bryant for a long time.

Disagree on the bold. A real QB will shred this team, which was a problem last year, although the staff finally seemed to settle on how they want to run the ball which should help this team.

 

I'm going to get flamed for this, but the targeting rule was the right call. Gifford hit the QB with his helmet, it doesn't matter if it was not intentional or if it wasn't severe. It's targeting and was enforced according to the rule.

Good win tonight. The play calling never deviated away from the run. When we passed it was methodical and well timed. Tommy played smart, and the coaches called a great game for Tommy

I was encouraged to see Coach Riley upset with the penalties. Coach did not become overly excited about the win and seemed to see that this team needs to clean up the penalties. TCU is barley beating South Dakota State, Oklahoma lost to Houston, no 5 LSU ost to an unranked Wisconsin team. This team has momentum and started the season off on a good foot. I look forward to seeing this team grow and watching our young lines become better each week.

I was curious as to why DPE was not returning punts. I do believe that this game was strategically conservative, and that we could have easily scored 60 points if we passed. The coached want to run the ball and as the game went on we saw the effects of smash mouth football, warn out team that did not have the stamina to keep going.

Stupid penalties need to change asap, Darlington I understand. Williams penalty was dumb.

True, but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and pay up if you want to achieve elite status. I guarantee that if LSU lets Miles go, they'll pay whatever it takes to buy him out without hesitation, and will bring in Tom Herman or another top-tier coach for top dollar. That's the name of the game these days if you want to compete for championships.

Hell of a good start. Everything started to unravel after DPE's fumbled jet sweep exchange.

That "kick in the nuts" single play that seems to plague us. A lack of mental toughness.... Every recent loss seems predicated on that "one play" we couldn't mentally recover from.

 

Ok well dpl hasn't played in over a year... and second, you proplr should chill out, it is the first half of the season. We have new faces on both sides of the line. Our running gsme looks good and the coached are determined to run the ball. Just calm down. Look at TCU tied with South Dakota state at the half...
