My theory is his dad (who said last fall that California players wouldn’t come to Nebraska anymore if Riley was fired) had it planned out but didn’t want to mess with his head by saying “in case you don’t win the job...”

If I had to hazard a guess, I would bet Mr. Nice Guy was on the phone to somebody after the depth chart was released Sunday morning.

I read that article some time ago.  I've also been watching footage of OSU's practices and haven't seen Mike in any of them.  I'm not saying he's not there because I can't say that definitively, but I haven't seen him and I've been looking.

Hmmm...I think I see a really nice guy at 6:24 in this one.

I guess we also have Eric Crouch. 1 in 500.

Surely there’s an example of someone that has left a team and then was drafted. I’m thinking for argument sake the example should be a QB to a QB transfer.

Russell Wilson, Jake Rudock.  A couple off the top of my head for the Big 10.

If a player transfers to another team within the conference,  they have to sit 2 years.

That was a Big 12 rule that doesn't exist in the Big 10.

Edit:  I guess Big 10 changed rule in 2012 for intra-conference transfers.  It is still only sitting out 1 year, but you lose a year of eligibility unless granted full release of your NLI.

They could very well have been telling the truth but QB is not the same as the other positions. Most people believe you need to get into a rhythm at that position, not switch back and forth. Frost said himself this week he wants 1 QB because he was a QB himself and it would have made it hard to get into a flow.

Given his comments it’s not odd at all for there not to he an OR.

Hopefully, things go well enough against teams like Akron, Troy, Illinois, etc. that they are able to get Gebbia a series late in the 2nd quarter and the bulk of the 4th quarter.  With freshmen being your 1st and 2nd string QBs you really need to get both some experience when you are able.

We had several from 2018 that could be counted back towards 2017.  I'm sure there will be a few that that will be able to be counted back against the 2018 class.

There will be no problem taking 27-28 and making the numbers work.  If we get higher than that it will take some figuring.

How does someone like Watt work?  Since he actually signed, does he count towards your total of 2018 signees?

26 right at the moment.  Bryant obviously a surprise.  Watt was kind of 50/50.

I would still think we'll lose a couple more after the season so 28 would be in play.

Any above 25 have to be EEs and Nebraska would have to have had lower than 25 count towards last year's class per NCAA rules.  Does anyone know the actual total that counted for 2018's class?

Thoughts from Dinardo, which Howard also agreed/said, that stood out to me, I am paraphrasing  a lot so don’t kill me on exact wording:

    1) This team is as good or can compete with any team we have seen (which includes Wisconsin), and in the West has a legit shot but has to have some good fortune due to schedule difficulty

    2) The practice they saw today was one of the 2 best they have seen thus far, and the BEST considering this was #14 and day after a scrimmage. Seemed REALLY impressed with tempo and speed of practice despite normally seeing tired legs at this stage. NO EVIDENCE of tired legs for DONU today

    3) Talent finally appears to resemble the on paper top 25 recruiting classes, first time they can say that since covering DONU

DiNardo has been a pretty straight shooter in the past so I am struggling not to shove an IV of Koolaid in right now

Point 1 - DiNardo said we can match up with any team in the West, including Wisconsin.

The speculation is getting ridiculous and all the non-answers the media receives it's like they're dry heaving in the desert dying of thirst. They get very little access and everything is an assumption based off 30 minutes of access. I'm not campaigning for the media here. We just don't have enough information to go off of on who is going to be the starter so all the he said she said crap is a nothing burger to me.

Until the Akron game and whoever lines up in shotgun that's when we'll know who their guy is. I'd prefer it not become a circus but this is a fish bowl after all.

You don't need to speculate.  Frost said himself that the they are pretty much tied and that they switch off days as far as who performs better.  If it were today, they both deserve to start.  I'm pretty sure that they hope someone separates himself this next week as far as out performing the other guy every day.

I edited it probably at the same time you posted.

Honestly with the tiny bit of info I can see why people could take it either way. But my theory (and yes I’m doing a lot of reading into few words) is they are specifically pushing Martinez to be more efficient because maybe it’s the one major obstacle that’s left for him to be the starter.

I hope they are "pushing" all of the QBs to improve on their weaknesses and their strengths.  That would be coaching and development.  I would hope they don't specifically pick one QB and only worry about him.

I just looked up the BTN TV schedule.  It says our episode will air Saturday at 5pm Central.  It will also air several more times later in the evening if you can't catch it then- 7:30pm, 9pm, and 11pm all on Saturday.  It also looks like it will air Sunday morning several times.

BTN.com and Charter channel guide has the first airing listed at 3:00 pm central on Sat. August 18, 2018.

You basing this off of Mike Riley talking him up? I remember the great General Lee and POB!

Well, since they didn't push to get Vedral qualified for this season, you have to think that the coaches are pretty content with what we can put on the field at QB.  I would probably say that we actually have a 1a and 1b (and possibly a 1c).

I think we'll have a hard time selling grad transfers our depth chart. However, Juco's and HS recruits are a different story.

At ILB?  We have 1 3 year starter returning, 1 JUCO that transferred in for the spring, and 2 underclassmen that haven't seen much game action and they are all learning a new system and only have a spring (15 practices) head start.  I don't know of many situations at other colleges that could be much better than that.

Kid can fly.  Runs a 10.6 100m, 21.46 200m, and a 47.23 400m.  Would love to beat out Urb for a STL WR.  He got both of them last year with Babb and Brown.

The Brown recruitment really stings.  I think tOSU is starting him out as a DB.  I think he could have shown out as WR in the new Nebraska offense.

Mavric, not trying to push buttons, but didn’t you have quite different feelings when this was happening with Riley recruits?

I am all for these situations by the way. We need to find an edge somewhere. Hopefully it pans out for us. If not, I’m not going to throw mud at Frost for trying, but it seemed like a lot of folks did at Riley.

Watts? Blades, even the kid that played DT with Snodgrass this year would qualify under the same context, right? Watts was a 4 Star. Blades was our top recruit in the past 5 years rating wise...

There is a difference over signing by 3 spots on your available scholarship limit and taking a shot on an academic risk while having two other recruits at the position (JUCO Bell and Miles Jones) and undersigning by 3+ spots and having your only recruit for the position (CB Blades) be an academic risk.  Watts wasn't as bad of a situation because they had D. Thomas and Daniels in the class, so they weren't putting all of their DT eggs in one academic risk basket.

I'm not an X's and O's guy at all, but why would the mesh point of the zone-read option be on the safety who is 5 yards off the LOS?  The zone-read option leaves a guy unblocked at the LOS and lets the unblocked defender take himself out of the play, given the QB makes the correct give/keep read.

You can block or read any defender.  Switching up the read man makes your offense less predictable.  On that play, we have a man to block every player on the screen except that safety.  So, you read him and run the play where he isn't.

Gebbia is looking directly at Dixon on the play. If it's Zone Read, he's reading Dixon.

Because Dixon is between him and the safety and is badly beating his man.  That is why Verduzco says "I see what he saw", but Dixon wasn't any part of his read.

I think you and I are saying similar things

    1) If it's an option, Stoll is blocking the wrong guy, and Gebbia should be reading the OLB

    2) If it's not an option, Stoll is doing a poor job of blocking the OLB, by allowing him to get inside of him.  Since it's not technically an option, Gebbia shouldn't have been pulling the ball away from the I-back.

No to number 1.  It is a read of the safety, not the OLB.  They were not optioning any of the front 7 on that play.  The read is that if the safety stays outside of the tackle, hand it off because we have numbers to the inside/right as there is a hat on a hat and an OLineman is releasing to block the middle LB.  If the safety crashes in on the inside run, then the QB pulls it.  Dixon caught Stoll off guard with a quick inside move.  Dixon was playing super aggressive with the snap count and had two offsides penalties because of it.

The dude in that picture is 6'6" and 317 lbs????  Hard to believe.

I believe in second chances for everyone, almost.  But if he is given a chance to play here, the leash needs to be very, very short.  If he shorts the Kwik Shop ten cents, he's out!

I have a feeling that the leash is short (as it should be) for anyone a part of the program.  Team above all else.  I think Coach Frost was at the front row to witness second chances, although it didn't work out for LP, but that is probably that there wasn't a TO in LP's life after he moved on from college.

Great stuff @Mavric.  Appreciate you posting.  Nu is in great hands with Frost and Co. Honest (brutal at times), but SOOOO refreshing.  I love it.  If the fans and media are hearing these expectations, I can imagine what the team is hearing.

Straight shooter, that is for sure.  Definitely like the critiques of players who may have seemed impressive and positive remarks for players that struggled a little.  Don't let players' heads get too big and don't let others get too negative/down that it affects them permanently.
