  1. ROFLMAO at all the folks who say things like, "Just move it to Boulder."  Or, like I have seen somewhere, "Moos should have moved the Akron game earlier cause the weather forcast clearly..."

It isn't like calling up your friends and saying, "Hey it looks like the weather might get bad for an evening cook out.  Let's move it to lunch."  There are vendors that have plannd their food prep and staffing.  There are ticket takers and ushers and security that would have to be notified.  The LPD plans and staffs accordingly.  StarTran staffs accordingly.  There is the band.  There are the businesses that plan their staffing.  How do you notify 90,000 ticket holders that, OBTW we are starting 5 hours early.  Ok, Fox, we've decided to change the time at the last minute.  It is a real pain for all these folks when the kick-off times used to be determined for some games on Sunday the week of the game.

I pulled up the "game notes" for the CU game and on the notes was a section, "Last Fie NU-CU Mettings" which includes the Bill Callahan swan song.  I had done my best to erase that bitter memory.  You should just never score 51 points and lose.

Let me get this right.  Are they saying there was an 18 and 1/2 minute gap* in Coach Meyers memory caused by mind altering substances.

To change the culture and mindset, he began emphasizing better training, and focused specifically on weight training.

As I recall weight training at Nebraska started despite the Bobfather rather than because.  Epley was helping one of the players rehab from an injury and other players noticed the difference and wanted in on it.  Osborne got him space and a salary and Devany told Epley, "...but if anyone gets slower, you're fired."  But of course they didn't. Never-the-less, I hope it is an apt comparison.

  5. No suprise after the above comments in the spring (that seemed like a shot across his bow at the time) and no indication since that he has made any move.  He might as well go where he has a chance to play some day.

  6. As pointed out by several, there are many factors that may have contributed including, but no limited to:  previous level of conditioning, current level of hydration, certain types of carb intake, protein intake (or lack of it), supplement, the degree to which the current training regimen is different from the previous one. genetic factors, attention of staff, design of workout, and one that has not been considered recent illness (e.g., influenza).  Here is a pretty good article on exercise induced rhabdomyolysis.  It is a little technical, but I think you can still learn some good info.  If you don't care about the biochemistry, skip 2.1 and 2.2.

  7. The UCF mantra for receivers was apparently, "No block.  No rock."  Receivers will block

Oops.  I guess that is old news based on the thread of the same name.

  8. Yes.  Speed vs power is a false dichotomy.  Why did the Bobfather win MNC?  He had a couple of 6-4 years and decided that they needed more speed to go along with the power and they opened up the offense to take advantage of that.  Why did the Huskers become dominant in the 90's?  They decided to recruit more speed to the defense.  They still developed strength and power but they had powerful players that were also fast.  It takes both.

  9. Look at TF's passing numbers sometime.  Only around 50% for completions, but pretty efficient.  I think TA would have done pretty well in the Osborne offense if he could keep his INT's down which might have been possible with more open receivers of Play action.  Who knows.

There are quite a few fans that are still worried that the staff are going to be recruiting our players during practice and the games. They're just scared.

They're scared that Frost 100% N and 0% UCF and will use this as an opportunity to take more stuff. And they know that we can't win without him.

This is how people act when they feel helpless, they b!tch about everything because at least they have control over that.

Certainly that is not an irrational fear for a UCF fan after McGriff.  Some may have felt the same about C.J. Smith, but he had already shown he wanted to go play P5 ball anyway.  Probably won't be that last UCF decommit either, because of how critical relationships are to recruiting (e.g., Moore, Bookie).

Oh man!  I remember that game.  I was a medical student at the time and dirt poor.  Lived in an old run down apartment near UNMC.  My wife was working fast food so we could afford school.  I took care of an older gentleman and he wanted to express his appreciation and though I told him it was not neccessary, he insisted.  Imagine my surprise when he handed me 4 tickets to this Nebraska-Oklahoma game.  When I looked up where they were, West Balcony 49 yard line.  OMG.  I figured those tickets would have been worth 4 figures on the open market.  I remember that play distinctly.  I also remember that there was a facemask that was really costly and then:  DAMN SOONER MAGIC.  Long throw to the tight end late in the 4th quarter.  That was the best game I had ever seen in person to that point.

  12. 4th quarter, 1971 Orange Bowl.  Night game.  Texas and tOSU had lost earlier in the day.  Nebraska is down 12-10 to the LSU tigers. Nebraska moves down the field and has the ball 1st and goal. They run Jeff Kinney, who takes the ball to just inside the 2.  2nd and goal, Tagge sneaks to the 1/2 yardline.  3rd and goal, Tagge sneaks and looks like he might be short, but he is on the pile and sticks the ball out over the goal line for a TD to take the lead.  That was the first game I ever saw in color.  My parents took me in to my Grandmother's house because she had color and we only had a B&W set.  Wow what a game.  Nebraska's first MNC (AP only cause the final UPI didn't include bowl games)

New commit: Jaron Woodyard the #2 rated WR out of JUCO. 3 star on 247 but 4 star on other rating systems. He is also VERY fast. Would be the top 3 fastest player on our roster (which i'm guessing the other two are tyjon lindsey and spielman)

Expect this to be a central part of the calculus that the Frost regime uses for offering players, and not only the skill players.  IIRC, one of the big turning points in the ascension of the Osborne teams from consistently very good to great was the decision to recruit speed, esp. defensive speed.  Taking big safeties and moving them to LB and big LB and moving them to DE.  I suspect that speed will be an essential trait of the offers that they make.  The other point is likely to try to go back to getting more practice reps for the younger players.  That was also a key in the past.  Part of the reason for the large walkon emphasis was to have enough players to get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teamers some real reps in practice instead of standing around and watching the ones

    No.  No they don't.

    Looking at some stats*

    Out of these defensive categories:

rushing, passing, scoring, total, sacks, TFL, Op 3rd down cov, fumbles recov, INT

Nebraska only ranks better than 100 in 3 and one of those they are 99th.

UCF is only ranked higher than 100 in 1 category, passing. They are certainly not a dominating defense, but not nearly as putrid as Nebraska was.

UCF average ranking in these categories was 66th admittedly pedestrian.  Nebraska's average rank 104.

UCF best ranking 5th in INT, worst 111 in passing.  Nebraska's best 61st in passing.  Worst 129 (out of 130) in TFL

    *from cfbstats.com

The cfbstats site did not have passing efficiency defense, but per ncaa.com  UCF 55, Nebraska 95

Pelini to players:  ...Tell me if I’m wrong, but the environment at Nebraska wore on you as the past several seasons progressed. It gets harder and harder and harder...It’s a b---- here. It’s hard enough when you have the negativity that comes from the media and the negativity from a lot of former players and this talk show and that talk show...And that’s my advice to you guys that come back. You can’t let this place eat you up, because if you let it, it’ll eat you up...Because I’ve been at LSU, I’ve been at Oklahoma, I’ve been to these other places and it ain’t quite — the scrutiny, the negativity — it ain’t like that everywhere. But it is what it is. But you gotta be strong as hell and deal with it...At the end of the day, what you gotta sit there and think is, ‘This is how many years I got left. These ought to be the best years of my life.’ And if I don’t think it’s going to be that way in this place, then you shouldn’t stay. But if you feel like, ‘Hey, this is the place for me. This is place where I’m going to enjoy my career,’ then this is where you should stay.

He clearly railed against FADSE, but he is basically inviting the players to leave.  I didn't re-listen to the whole thing, but seem to remember him saying something about the new coaches will probably come in and say that everything we did was wrong, or words to that effect.  It was my distinct impression at the time that he was poisoning the well, although I don't know if that was his intent.  It was no favor to the next staff, that is certain.  I am glad that this group of players, at least doesn't have to deal with that BS.

edit: sorry about the double quotes.

  16. He was classy as always.  He said he was disappointed.  He said he still believes that the program is set up to succeed in the future.  He enjoyed his time here. He didn't complain.  That had to be INCREDIBLY hard to stand up in front of everyone after you have been sacked.  Imagine the crushing sense of disappointment he had to be feeling.  Yet, he stood there and answered questions.  He didn't cry, but I did and a am 100% behind the decision to let him go.  It is rare to see such class.

  17. In the final analysis, I suspect that, assuming Moos has seen enough to make his decision and is working on a replacement, the only thing that firing HCMR really accomplishes is to satisfy the fans wielding pitchforks and torches that desire some immediate consequence for the putrid state of the Huskers.  Everything else will likely play out the same.  Coaches with current coaching jobs are unlikely to make a move until after the regular season is over. But, in the end, the season will end in a whimper and STBFHCMR will get to say goodbye.  He will probably tell the players how much he appreciated their hard work and to work hard for the next guy.  He won't call ADBM a @#%t and will get on with the interminably long offseason wondering what next year's team will look like and we will begin to craft nearly impossible to meet expectations for the next staff.
