  1. i agree, but texas could sneak in there. their schedule sets up better IMO... and they've got a game in hand right now... but they still probably have to take 2 @TCU and that's probably the killer. If they take 2 of 3 this week against OSU it's pretty cake outside of that trip to TCU. They've already played WVU and KSU who are probably the next best teams after OSU.

Don't get me wrong, TCU is the better team, but Texas could VERY easily win that league.

  2. Well we're about half a run better than the school record for ERA and we just gave up 3 runs in 33 innings against a team that has GOOD odds of winning the Big 12.

Don't kid yourself, our pitching is REALLY good. So is our defense. If we score 4 runs we're going to win a ton of games. That 4 run barrier is pretty much the magic number so far.

  3. given the relevance to rpi (and thus ncaa seeding), midweek games count the same

however, as stated, the weekend series is when you'll face the best pitching. you'd probably win more midweek games if you threw your best guys then, but you'd lose many more weekend games to compensate.

given the nature of the beast (freshman learning to hit and throw against much better competition) it pays to have some midweek games against lesser opponents -- not many because it kills the rpi, but you need to let them off the leash occasionally or you won't know what you have in a couple years.

i personally like midweek games against teams like arkansas and KSU as well... good teams that help you get better ncaa seeding. it's hard to get a perfect schedule honestly. part of me loves playing cal state fullerton or similar every week. part of me knows a complete grinder could wear your team down. this year is probably a fairly decent balance, especially given that the big ten seems MUCH better in the rpi than they are normally (they're currently 5th in RPI among conferences).

  4. Huh...especially considering how strong some of the B1G teams came on last season, I'm kinda surprised by this. I understand Indiana not being in the mix (coach and kids gone), but Nebraska, Illinois, and Maryland all should be higher than they are.

Guess they're going to wait until one or more teams shows up in non-con play before they elevate them?

In 2005 we barely started in the top 50 before the season and ended up ranked 3rd. They don't rank northern teams high at all until the season is over. Just how it is. With our non-conference schedule all we have to do is win.
