I was just going to ask about Raiola.  Are our linemen really that bad?  I mean, I see the garbage they put on the field every week, but is it that they're lacking talent, or our player development is three years behind schedule?

They lack talent BECAUSE they are 3 years behind in development... however, I don't see much improvement from last year, thus, Raiola hasn't exactly been a major plus thus far... can't say he's been a negative tho; simply to early to tell.

  2. Last season we put very little pressure on opposing QBS.

I believe our front three will be much improved, both, technically and physically. I think they will do a solid job of pushing the pocket on passing downs.

HOWEVER, We absolutely NEED an edge rusher to step up from the LB group.

Personally, I feel Ferguson has the aggression and quickness to get around the edge and be an effective and consistent pass rusher; but I want to know how you guys feel.

  3. Opinions on O-line progress after watching Spring Game?

Personally; I still see the O-line as the biggest area that lacks behind in comparison to our conference foes; followed slowly by our DBs.

The gap became VERY wide under Riley. The gap has been significantly narrowed; but I think the damage needs one more year to be reversed, via coaching and weight training, if we want to see a top-5 O-line unit. Hopefully the offensive scheme and our play-makers can compensate...

of course, it be great if I was completely wrong and our O-Line mauled Defenses.

  4. I think this loss to Mich will be the most telling point in the season, in regards to truly 'buying-in'

I think there were a ton of guys who where 'buying-in', but only  to the hype...

but, now it's time to see who is truly buying into the Scott Frost philosophy, system, process, etc.

This.  Can't get vertical with no pass pro.  Can't do a RPO with no time.  No zone read options when the OL is getting blown up.......No counters , traps or misdirection as OL getting blown up.  Can't set up screen plays because we can't block......Can force them out of the box with passing game because we have no time to pass. Most teams not crowding as they are getting home with hat on hat......It starts up front and we don't.

I've seen a number of top teams in which the QB just does a 3 step dropback, heaves the ball up high and far to a WR who is one-on-one.... even with an unblocked rusher... heck, it's a staple in their playbook.

You can't consistently throw the ball downfield with terrible protection (or do anything, really)... but you can find ways to throw the ball downfield (at least, occasionally) even with little time.

I saw almost none of that.

I want to see our coaching staff at least give these WRs a shot to make a play downfield.

  6. Mich. is bigger, stronger, faster...

Don Brown is a great coach.

Talent on the line is a necessity if you plan on winning.

We can't overcome early mistakes, still.

3-man line may not work in Big-10... regardless if you run 'attack-style' or 'bend-but-don't-break'

  7. Just want to get a sense of what you all think of our offensive play-calling.

I saw Michigan consistently load the box & play press coverage outside. Essentially, they were daring us to throw downfield.

After the INT, I saw play-calling that played right into Mich's hands; sideline throws; quick rollout/short routes, quick outside runs...

There is a major talent gap (that's another argument, though); perhaps the coaches simply had no faith that we could pass protect effectively enough to throw the ball downfield; and, in all likelihood, they are right... But I would have like to see us put in an extra blocker, and at least try... give your play-makers a chance to be electric.

  8. I learned that a proper S&C program is ESSENTIAL to building a strong program. First time I've seen our guys consistently win the battle @ the LOS against a decent P-5 in a long time; on both sides...

Yesterday's loss was very encouraging for me. The "team" play was very good.... unfortunately, we just had to many "individual" mistakes (2 fumbles; two HUGE drops, the PF penalty late, AM's int.)
