So, let's say for argument that Moos and Frost have had talks (or their people have), and Scott has said "Bill, I'd love to coach the Huskers, but I owe it to the people here to finish one more season to finish what we started.  After that, I'm all Nebraska, 100%."  Does Bill say, "Nope, sorry, now or never, thank you very much, we'll find someone else" ?

It would suck beyond belief for another year (maybe), but if that were the case, wouldn't most fans like that outcome in the long run?

If that's the case, then you tell him, "Would an extra two years, and 12 million change your mind?"

  2. The fact that we have to tell a recruit, "Guess what? We're not going to fire our HC!" Is a pretty good indicator of things to come...

The fact that the 1 thing a recruit took away from a visit was, "uhhh; well, the coach isn't getting fired; so that's good." Tells me that the recruiting this year is, in all likelihood, nearly as atrocious as the coaching has been this season.

I learned I just won some money. (4th time this year 4 for 4 yeah!)

I learned that the team that scores the most points wins.

Over the last few years I learned this is just  a game and its no longer my life.

I did find it funny / interesting when the opposing coach on field interview is basically dont fire Mike Riley that had my sides splitting.

I was laughing at that, as well. Fitz basically took it upon himself to lobby on Riley's behalf.

Every B1G coach is gonna be sad to see Riley go. Publicly, it's because "He's a great coach (yeah, right), and an even better guy (that's WAY more believable)", realistically, it's because... well, he's 'not' a good coach.

In regards to prop bets, specifically next coach prop bets, if Vegas knows something, bets are usually no longer taken. This has been my experience anyway.

Do you know why? Not questioning; just seems odd. One would think there could be money to be made, 'especially' if they were aware of the ultimate outcome.

  5. I'm a fan because my father is a fan, and is from the state of Nebraska. I spent most of my summers as a child in Nebraska, and can remember watching many Neb. games throughout my childhood. I was just a child, during the glory daze; but I, at the very least got to witness it; even if I wasn't comprehending what was going on. I didn't start understanding the game and truly start becoming a fan until the Eric Crouch days. I've been a dedicated fan since. Fell in love with the team during the '09 season through the Martinez days.

A question that will be asked eventually (maybe it has already) is if the next coach (Frost, hopefully) is coming in with less or more talent then what Riley came in with?

He'll have a far worse O-line; and that basically kills the team. So, yeah, less talent.

    BUUUUUUT;

He'll probably have better skill position players on O, He might have a better QB to groom in Gebbia or O'Brien

Defense is a big Q. It's my opinion that Riley had better talent coming in than what will be left over next year; but the system we are currently running may be 'washing-out' some of the natural talent of some of our players and putting these kids in a position to look bad... or they just may not be as talented.

As soon as you compared Riley to Saban i stopped reading, the reality is that Alabama will be REALLY good as long as Saban is there

I didn't compare Riley to Saban; in fact I specifically said:

I don't bring up the question to defend Riley; he's a couple tiers bellow those names, and I'm on par with letting him go after season's end (as I don't foresee a major improvement incoming).

I ask because, if we do happen to hire Scott Frost OR a Head Coach the fan base is in consensus with (would prob. have to be a big name hire, if not Frost), and they put together 3 years similar to what we've seen thus far, do we give them the boot, as well; or do we afford them more time because of their reputation? What factors play a role?

The question was brought up because I wanted to know if elite coaches had a longer leash if they, for whatever reason, put together 1-poor, 1-mediocre, and 1-very poor season in a row?

and, MORE IMPORTANTLY, if we hired Frost or a big name HC everyone was happy with; would we afford them an extra year if they put together three sub-par seasons riddled with blowouts and losses to pedestrian programs.

  8. Do you think Saban would be canned from 'Bama if he put together three similar seasons, starting from '18 thru '20, that we've seen the past three seasons? It would be tough to fire such an accomplished coach, yet Idk if their organization would stand for the blowouts and a loss to a G5 opponent. If his recruiting slips, is that a factor? What if he's still pulling in top-5 classes; do you risk it?

Would OSU keep Urban around if they were put in a similar situation? What about Swinney, Peterson, or Patterson at Clem., Wash. & TCU?

  9. Cali has A LOT of talent; especially at those big time private schools.

Problem is; those O-lineman/front-7 boys that are nearly ready to play coming out of college are going to USC, ND, or even UCLA; not Neb.

Riley, no matter how good of a recruiter (and he's not even that good of a recruiter; this 'calibraska' ordeal has been overblown; he has stolen NO big Cali recruits from any of the major programs imho.) is never going to steal those recruits from the big time programs who have established a pipeline to those H.School programs.

If you're on the hook for $5+ million a year to Herman, Sumlin or Jimbo Fisher, you might already be thinking it's too much.

Franklin, Dantonio, and Swinney are sitting near $4.4 million a year, which seems about right.

Gary Patterson, David Shaw and Mark Richt are getting $4 million a year. Gary Peterson might be a bargain at $3.6 million.

Scott Frost might be this year's hot coach, but it's hard to believe he immediately commands a bigger salary than these guys.

But I think you can give him something in the adjacent neighborhood, back-ended with perks and incentives.

It might be a situation like how NFL QB's get paid. Matt Stafford is the highest paid QB in the NFL. Is he the best QB? No, he just happens to be the most recent franchise QB to get a new contract...

Its lookin' like Frost is a hot commodity; so he may be considered the next 'Franchise Coach' to many teams out there looking for his services. Is he the best/most proven coach in CFB? maybe not, but he is going to be the most recent big name hire; and for that reason, will probably need to be payed more than Shaw, Peterson, Richt, etc.... and when it's time for their extensions to be made; they'll need to be payed at/or higher than what Frost is at.

It's just how the business works, it seems.

  11. Since we're not supposed to start any new Scotty Frost threads, I'll ask the question here & hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle...

What would contract offer would you consider fair... AND....

What contract offer would you offer Frost in order to try and get him here in Lincoln? (assuming that's the coach you want)

How many years would you offer? How much base salary per year(guaranteed cash)? How many bonuses, and for what?

Feel free to throw in other coaches, too... I just finished midterms, and I'm bored.

^Really? Is that actually a true, defensible statement? Or are we high into "frame everything Riley has ever done in the worst possible light" hour?

Because it's going to be pretty awkward when Frost talks about execution or engages in what might be called 'coachspeak' after a loss.

Haven't you heard? Frost isn't going to lose if he comes to Nebraska. EVER.

Sure, a coach thats putting it all on the players.  If you don't have the horses to run in the race, change races.  In other words, if the scheme doesn't fit our players abilities, change it or just simply it so the KIDS can execute it!

    This x 100

We've had a "problem executing the gameplan" ever since joining the B1G, Pelini or Riley.

What's the constant; well, the gameplan itself has been relatively similar. Our D-line is told to hold their ground & sorta 'read-and-react' to the play & let the LB's & safeties shoot the proper gaps to make the play (or in our case; over-pursue, shoot the wrong gap, take a bad angle, or run into the D-lineman's back.)

Just tell our guys to get into the backfield, cause disruption, & make the play when it's their to be made. That seems to be the gameplan for most of the other B1G teams, and they all play each other relatively tough.

Let's say UCF does go undefeated, do you really think the committee is going to put them in over a one loss Georgia, one loss Big Ten team/Wisconsin, one loss Clemson, one loss Big XII champ?  This assumes Bama is undefeated.

That's my argument... We agree that there are more than 3 (also assuming 'Bama goes undefeated) 1-loss P5 teams that will get the nod over and undefeated UCF... Georgia, TCU, Okla., OSU, Penn St., Clemson, Wash. & USC might still be in the hunt.

I guess we just have differing opinions on whether Frost would be acknowledge that going undefeated and getting an invite to a New-Years Bowl is the peak for UCF. I'm not 100% convinced either way, tbh; was just throwing out the question.

Definitely not a requirement. Look at the QBs Alabama has won titles with. Cement footed statues.

Good point... maybe 'requirement' is too strong a word. But like others mentioned; It is VERY difficult to find a QB w/ great accuracy & decision making consistently AND consistently build lines that have the pass-blocking tools to run a NFL-type offense.

It's simply more efficient for the majority of teams to find a QB w/ 'good' accuracy (maybe even mediocre, if he is REALLY dangerous w/ his feet) but proper decision making abilities that has no problem using his feet (and is encouraged to use his feet to add stress to the D); then focus on building a big, strong line w/ a more simplistic power/man blocking scheme or even a quick spread attack, in which the line won't need to pass protect for extended periods of time.

He doesn't need to have Martinez, Kap, Denard Robinson, or RGIII speed, but the athletic ability of a Colt McCoy, Luck, Mayfield, Manziel, Russ Wilson, or that Flutie guy on the Dr. Pepper commercial.

Those who want Frost need to hope and pray that UCF goes undefeated and/or makes a New Years 6 bowl as that's the ceiling for Group of 5 teams.  Anything short of that gives UCF some extra leverage in trying to convince Frost to stay and complete 'unfinished business'.

Going undefeated and being snubbed of the playoff in favor of 3 1-loss P5 teams would create a bigger sense of 'unfinished business', no?

Interesting point from Sean Callahan today on this subject.  He noted that finding quality tackles for a pro style system is very hard.  He noted that Osborne had a lot of success by running a system that played to his linemen's strengths.  Noted that even some of the best Pipeline tackles - mentioned Wiegert specifically - played guard in the NFL.

Same w/ Alabama's big-time (at least they were considered big-time at draft time) left tackles. They seemed to have transitioned into pretty solid NFL guards or Right Tackles. S.C. has a very good point. It's probably just as hard to find a really good 'pro-style' LT as it is to find a really good 'pro-style' QB. Hate to say it, but for non-power recruiting programs, it may not even be worth trying to run a traditional pro-style offense.

POB and Gebbia are mobile enough. Would rather have those guys and their great arms and serviceable legs over the vice versa. Obviously everyone would prefer great arm and great legs but that isn't terribly common, maybe 3 guys each class have it all.

POB actually surprised me BIG TIME, with his mobility during the little time he saw in the OSU game...

he looked like a Tin-Man-QB during the spring game and seemed a little overweight... last Sat. he looked in WAAAAY better shape and was a lot more mobile than the Spring game; and a lot more mobile than Lee seems to be.

I've had two people compare Gebbia to Johnny Football already; I can see how one can see the similarities, but it's WAY too big of a comparison to be fairly made at this point... glad to see that a familiarity exist between the two, though; as Manziel is, undoubtedly, one of the greatest CFB QB's of all-time.

Literally all Bill Moos has to do is hire Scott Frost and he will be a hero at Nebraska for the next century. You have 3 easy ass jobs: 1. keep giving money to john cook, 2. hire scott frost 3. find a replacement for miles literally almost anyone you hire will be better and if it isn't then it's not that big of a deal it's husker basketball we always suck

    In terms of #3:

Maybe we can steal Tyronn Lue from the Cavs once LeBron leaves for LA after this season (I wish).

Or maybe we should offer the job to a former player who young players grew up admiring & respect and wouldn't mind learning from and hanging out with for a year or two... offer the job to Manu Ginobli, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Vince Carter, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Dwayne Wade (if he retires)... Big names w/ clean reputations. Just a thought.

  20. I miss downhill, attack, in-your-face defense... It simply breeds nastiness on the lines (both lines, if you have 1's v. 1's during practice/off-season).

We are in desperate need of some angry, mean lineman.

... Maybe if Frost is hired he brings in some of his 96/97 line teammates to try and reignite that flame. He would need to bring in a D-Coord. that brings and attack-style play first, though.

  21. Firing Riley sends 1 of 2 messages to the players, imo.

    1. We've given up on this season; sooooooooo, yeah...

    2. We're getting set to begin a new chapter in NU football history; you know it, we know it, and we're not gonna hide it. We want to get a jump start on the process; so lets get started in the right foot, boys... from here on out, we're 0-0.

I think the later is a tough sell; so, although I, too, was disappointed to hear there were no changes going to be made until season's end, I've come to believe that this may be the best course of action... Although part of me believes that Riley may be doing more harm than good in terms of player development; and I feel Diaco may better maximize player growth as interim.
