I am optimistic going into this season - I always am. Realistically, though, after the last 15 seasons watching an average football team, I hope to see us become consistently more competitive against the top teams. It is a journey, and many programs are seeking to do the same. No simple solutions, just a lot of hard work.

A coach of what school would care what Nebraska's administration thinks of this job?

“That job is a lot worse than it was a few years ago, and no one in the administration seems to recognize it,” said one anonymous coach to Athlon.

The smart money is on Iowa, who is still butthurt over Eichorst's explanation of Pelini's firing. "In the final analysis, I had to evaluate where Iowa was."

Iowa beat us 42-10 last year, and they have won the last two. If there ever was any "butthurt," I am guessing they are over it. Let's just focus on taking another step forward this year. We haven't finished in the top 10 since 2001 - that is 16 long years.

At least we're ahead of Iowa!
