Yeah...they need to take care of business in the non-con.  9-2 should be the expectations.  Anything worse than that should be looked at as troublesome.  But...it sure would be awesome to be 10-1 or 11-0.

It's probably going to be another non-con where we start conference play still not knowing how good we are.

At least the two December conference games aren't virtually unwinnable like the last several seasons.  MSU will be tough, but at Minnesota should be winnable.

    Only three weeks until Lindenwood...

Was just going to point that out.  That puts them 11th in the B1G.

    Purdue #1

    MSU #13

    Illinois #19

    Wisconsin#20

    Marlyand #22

    OSU #35

    Michigan #44

    Indiana #49

    Iowa #50

    Nebraska #58

    Rutgers #59

    Penn St #85

    Minnesota #112

    Only two NC matchups matter:

    Creighton #12

    K-State #25

Third best NC team is Duquesne at 89.  Even Oregon State is only at 175 (one place behind Cal State Fullerton).   If they don't go at least 9-2 in NC, it could be a long season.

NC average is 207, conference average is 45.

  3. ESPN has graded the 46 D1 transfer QB's.  Sims got a D-.

Grading 46 college football quarterback transfers in 2023 - ESPN

    Quote

    Grade Tier: D-

    158.png&h=60&w=60

    Jeff Sims, Nebraska Cornhuskers

    Transferred from: Georgia Tech

2023 stats: 220 pass yards, 1 TD pass, 4 interceptions, 156 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

How he has fared so far: Sims brought starting experience and dual-threat skills to Nebraska's offense under a new coaching staff but had a very rough start before an ankle injury late in a Week 2 loss to Colorado. The accuracy and turnover issues that surfaced at times during his time at Georgia Tech showed up as he had three interceptions in a painful opening loss to Minnesota, and then three more giveaways (two lost fumbles, one interception) in the Colorado debacle. Sims' running ability jumped out -- he had a 57-yard touchdown run against Colorado -- but so did the mistakes, and Nebraska is moving forward with Heinrich Haarberg at QB.

For comparison Logan Smothers got a B- & Casey Thompson got an incomplete.

I do think there is like this odd idea that everyone is out watching HS games on a Friday.  For the most part I don't think I know one person that goes to a high school game on a Friday night anymore.

I didn't go to HS football games when I was in HS.  I ran cross country, so we always had a meet on Friday or early Saturday AM.  If our meet was Friday, I was too tired to watch the football get their a$$es kicked and if it was Saturday I had to be up at 5 or 6 AM so I could eat something before the meet.

Well, hopefully, we get the conference season started off well instead of being bad and then good at the end.

It would be nice if that happened.  I think the NC schedule is set up to give the team confidence.  Other than the Creighton & K-State games they are all easily winnable.  I'm not sure what K-State has this year, but it's in Manhattan and will be Sunday after finals week where practices will be shorthanded/inconsistent because of player availability.

So last year Northwestern was a #7 seed at 12-8 in the conference (tied for the second-best record in the B1G).  Michigan State was also a #7 seed.  Maryland, Illinois and Iowa were all #8/#9 seeds at slightly over .500 in-conference.  Penn State was a #10 seed at 10-10.

It would appear that Purdue, MSU and Illinois would be expected to be better based on the higher seeding.  Which means they have more wins and fewer for everyone else to go around.  So after those three, not many more than a game or two above .500 in the conference.

The only preseason computer predictions I can find are at Bart Torvik.  He has Purdue at 15-5, MSU at 13-7, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Northwestern & Ohio State at 11-7, Nebraska & Iowa at 10-10, Rutgers at 9-11, Michigan at 8-10, Minnesota at 5-15 & Penn State at 4-16. Have fun figuring out the tiebreakers for third if that happens.

It looks like it will be a lot like last year - a couple of teams at the top and bottom and a big cluster in the middle.

  7. CBS Sports agrees with the B1G preseason poll.  Huskers 12th.  The do have Tominaga as a player to watch.

Keisei Tominaga | G | Nebraska: Tominaga was the Big Ten's best player not named Zach Edey during the final month of the 2022-23 season. He averaged 20.3 points on an absurd 55.7% shooting over Nebraska's final nine games, when the Cornhuskers went 6-3. He is the key to Nebraska's hopes of breaking through in coach Fred Hoiberg's fifth season

Nebraska finally made strides in coach Fred Hoiberg's fourth season after winning 10 or fewer games in his first three years. The Cornhuskers finished 16-16 (9-11 Big Ten) and won six of their final eight regular season games. The reason for the late-season surge? Keisei Tominaga. The 6-2 guard averaged 20.3 points while shooting 55.7% from the floor and 43.1% from 3-point range over Nebraska's final nine games. He's back for a final season but needs needs some help after last year's No. 2 and 3 scorers departed. A deep transfer class headlined by first-team All-Missouri Valley big man Rienk Mast from Bradley and ex-Iowa guard Ahron Ulis has potential.

  8. ESPN's latest bracketology has 7 B1G teams in the tournament - Purdue & MSU as 1 seeds, Illinois (5), Wisconsin (7), Maryland (8), Northwestern (9), Indiana (10).  Ohio State in first four out & Rutgers, Michigan & Iowa in next four out.  I do find it odd that three of the seven would be in the South Region (Illinois, Wisconsin & Northwestern).

Why do we even want to win the West? So we can get curb stomped by Michigan again?  I want a bowl game.  I want to play a team we have a chance at beating and actually get better from playing.

It's not like winning the West means they will go to a high level bowl against another Michigan level team.  The winner of the West will be (at best) the fourth best team in the conference.  Whichever team wins the West will go to a lower tier bowl to play a team of similar ability.  Winning the West means a slightly better bowl and a few more days of practice that the team clearly needs.

Bump was my neighbor when I was a kid.  Bit of a douchebag.

    Jay was always cool though.

I knew Bump through age group track (he was a few years older than me).  Great pole vaulter.  Scared of heights.  Someone asked him how he could pole vault if he was afraid of heights.  He said he couldn't see how far up he was without his glasses/contacts.

Should be a good matchup.  Utah is 51 at Bart Torvik preseason.

Still no Ken Pom or ESPN BPI preseason rankings out.

i don't think attendance would be a problem if we were good. i don't remember ever struggling to sell tickets when were a top 25 team.

i don't think volleyball would sell out every game if they weren't one of the best teams every single year

Basketball basically sells out every game and they haven't consistently been good for 30 years.  The actual attendance doesn't reflect the arena being sold out, but their 2022/23 average attendance was almost 15300 (10th in the country) with a capacity of 15500.

Anyway too high .... $450 million renovation .  i.e. Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium from scratch to final product,  construction cost was $168.5 million ($303 million in 2022)

It's almost always more expensive to renovate than to build new when dealing with 100 year old buildings, especially ones that have had multiple renovations/additions.  The problem NU has is that there is nowhere on campus to build a new stadium, so they can't build a $350-400 million stadium.

As far as the Tampa Bay stadium, it was built in 1998.  There are many things that fans expect out of a stadium now that didn't exist 25 years ago, so that 303M in 2002 dollars doesn't really apply.

I'm not saying that the 1B Taj Mahal's that NFL teams are building is appropriate for a college team, but comparing to a stadium that was built 25 years ago isn't either.

  15. Never played "organized" football.  When friends & I played in the yard/park, I always had pretty good hands, but I was slow.  Probably why I became a distance runner.

Ran track & cross country in high school & college (D3).  As far as know, I'm the only person at my college who ran the 10000, 5000 and 3000 steeplechase in the same meet (one day).  Scored points for the team in the 10k & steeple.  Didn't have much left for the 5k but finished it (and not last).

I don't really watch a lot of football anymore & my SO is always shocked when I call penalties before they are announced on TV.

Meh. When I go to a game I could give a F less about how nice the bathrooms are or if the stadium has seat backs. What I do remember is the actual game and the energy of the crowd. Spend $500 million on getting an annual top 10 program then worry about the stadium.

Apparently you've never been stuck in a row full of 400 lb fans who each take 2-3 seats and leave everyone squished together like sardines.  You also should know that those 400 lb fans sweat like they are water fountains even when it's 30 degrees outside.

IMO you're right in some situations about the player either being a) poorly evaluated and/or b) under developed, but another big problem is just talent retention. Another phrase I like to use is the "roster boss." It's not a problem specific to Nebraska, either. It's pretty much a universal issue that's been happening for awhile but got worse once the transfer portal became a thing.

Basically, if we go back and look at some of Nebraska's recruiting classes from the last 5-10 years, it's eye-opening just how many players either didn't make a significant impact and/or transferred out of the program. Obviously attrition is going to happen but they just seem to have way more misses than hits.

I think roster churn has a lot to do with players thinking they deserve to play right away when they don't.  They've never been on a team where they weren't one of the best players and they don't know how to handle it when they get to college, so if they aren't starting (or at least playing a lot) so they enter the portal.  The worst part is that there are hundreds of players who go into the portal and nobody wants them.  Now they've given up a free ride to college and their athletic dreams because they couldn't be patient.

It's even worse in basketball because a lot of players play for a different AAU and/or HS team every year searching for a team that will give them guaranteed playing time or more exposure and that attitude carries over to college.

  18. 19 minutes ago, BigRedBuster said:

Obviously, we would love to have 4-5 star players at every position meeting all the expectations there are with those types of recruits.  Fact is, that's not where we are at.  I just cringe though when I see people make comments like...."well, we have a walkon starting so that obviously sucks".  Not all walkons are great and not all walkons suck.

I don't follow recruiting that closely, but based on final rankings, NU has had to have plenty of 4-star recruits and a few 5-stars.  The problem is they have either been overrated out of HS, or haven't been developed by previous staffs.

There seems to be a lot of 4/5-star players that dominate in HS because they are superior athletes, but don't put in the work to improve when they get to college and everyone is athletically equal (or better).  Even Lebron James and Usain Bolt had to work their a$$es off when they got to the world stage.  I know neither of them went to college, but it's the same principle.  It's not always about talent, there has to be a drive to improve too.  Lamar Jackson when he was at Louisville had a huge arm and great running ability as a freshman, but didn't complete 55% of his passes and only had a 12/8 TD/Int rate.  He worked his tail off in the offseason and won the Heisman as a sophomore.  His completion percentage didn't increase by a huge amount (56.2%), but his TD/Int rate went to 30/9.

I'm not saying NU has a Lebron/Usain/Lamar kind of player on their roster, but the players they do have need to have the internal drive to improve.  It can't always be on the coaches and they can't only rely on their natural talent.
