  1. I suppose you could do it. There would be a few logistical problems/hurdles to clear.

    1) It wouldn't be an official NCAA game, so technically the NCAA could dole out punishments for competing in an unsanctioned game.

    2) Since it isn't an official NCAA game, you'd need someone to pay for all the officials, chain gang, instant replay crew, etc. The tickets may pay for that, but ...

    3) How many Nebraska fans would you expect to go? Because whatever number that is, that would be the total number for paid attendance. I don't think Florida State fans would go this year even if the tickets were free. They want to forget this year.

    4) You'd have to convince both teams and staffs to do it. Nebraska may want to do it because they look much better now than in Sepetember. I doubt Florida State players would want to play.

    5) Similar to point 1, any practices Nebraska had would be illegal since they won't be bowl eligible. Practicing could lead to minor sanctions. If the game was somehow allowed, neither team would be allowed to practice ahead of time.

In all honesty though, I'd watch it if it somehow happened. Apologies if I sound like a wet blanket. It's an interesting idea.

Besides the bowl game what do we have over Michigan? They beat more ranked teams, whooped a common opponent, tougher conference, etc.  The only thing we bring up is the bowl game.

Never mind. I see I'm the third person to bring up that half of Michigan's ranked wins weren't ranked by the end of the season.

Schedule the absolute worst team possible.  Preferably from a warm weather school, and drag them up to Nebraska in December.

I don't know if Arkansas-Pinebluff is LITERALLY the worst team in division 1 football, but if they aren't they appear to be pretty damn close.

I also don't know if they have had any games cancelled, but they appear to really suck.

  4. It looks like Nebraska will struggle this year. I've never really had any love for the Big 10. I guess I just want to watch the (college football) world burn this year.

I hope Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State lose every game the rest of the year. I realize they can't because they play each other. Don't care.

  5. I agree with everyone that the top three in the East will be some order of Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.

Who the heck knows in the West? I suppose Iowa and Wisconsin will be and Illinois definitely won't.

    I'll say:

    East

    1) Penn State

    2) Ohio State

    3) Michigan

    West

    1) Iowa

    2) Wisconsin

    3) Ummm ... Northwestern? Maybe Nebraska?

A Big Ten team should not lose at home to a team from the Sun Belt no matter what string quarterback is playing in whomever head coach’s first season.

Nick Saban and Alabama lost to Lousiana-Monroe in 2007, his first year at Alabama. And unlike Troy who may win 9 or 10 games this year, Monroe went just 6-6 and did not play in a bowl game.

I'm not saying Frost will have Saban's success, but let's not be stupid. Year one. Backup walkon QB.

  7. If I was a betting man, I'd say that Nebraska will play Tennessee State Oct. 27. Tennessee State is really bad and would almost certainly be the worst team Nebraska has played since Idaho State in 2012.

That may seem dirty or distasteful, but Nebraska is going to schedule a win. If not an FCS team, then ECU would probably work too. It won't be UCF. Zero chance this year. Maybe in 2022 when all the players Frost recruited are gone.

  8. Art Briles is a terrible and awful person, but was a really good coach at Baylor. A few years ago, I think 2013 or 2014, Baylor lost all their QBs to injury before a bowl game against North Carolina.

Baylor shifted their offense to more of a single-wing veer offense and put a really good athlete at QB. They then ran it almost every play against UNC and destroyed them.

Obviously this isn't the same scenario. Nebraska doesn't have a month before its next game and the Huskers don't have top-10 talent. If Martinez is out for a while though and Bunch goes down with an injury, then they may have to try something like this.

I saw a few people on in here in a couple different threads complaining about why Scott Frost didn't do this or that differently at the end of the game and that his clock management sucked. I respectfully disagree. When was the last time we had a coach that wanted to WIN games, not just not lose them? HCSF is aggressive and wants to crush his opponents, beat them and smash them in to the ground. I'll take this L and don't feel bad about it because we finally have a coach that wants to WIN. It sucks we lost, but hot damn, I am excited to see how much this team has improved and how much of a coaching/mindset improvement we have with HCSF.

Agreed. It's nice having a head coach that remains aggressive instead of puckering up whenever things get close.

And honestly, it will probably cost Nebraska a few wins under Frost. It will almost certainly create more wins over the years though.

  10. My father is/was a physician. (He's retired, not dead.) I am not an expert on being a doctor, but here are four things I learned from him.

    1) Don't fake sick to get out of school when Dad's a doctor.

    2) If it hurts when your arm, leg, shoulder etc. moves a certain way, then stop moving it that way.

    3) If you're prescribed medicine, take the correct dosage for as long as it says to take them.

    4) Never assume anything with sports injuries on tv.

Adrian Martinez could be injured badly and out for the season.Or maybe he's out three weeks. Or maybe he'll play next week. We don't know and won't tonight.

  11. This thread seems to have three different kinds of people/thinkers. Result-oriented people, process-oriented people and a mixture of the two.

Nobody is happy after a loss, but it seems like a lot of the result-oriented people are more upset because they care more about results. The process-oriented people aren't happy, but feel much better because Nebraska looked immensely more competent than last year.

I guess I'm more process-oriented, at least right now. Nebraska was -3 in turnovers, missed a field goal, failed to convert two fourth downs and STILL they had a chance to win the game with a backup walkon QB in the first game with an entirely new staff and system against another power five team. Generally, teams with all the negatives listed above lose by three touchdowns or more in similar situations.

I don't know how long Martinez is out, and that could be extremely problematic, but Nebraska looks to be in much better shape now. Get the process right and the results will follow.

I don't think I've ever experienced a Nebraska loss yet felt so good about it.

The last time I did was when Nebraska lost to Texas in 2009 in the Big XII title game. At the same time though, that one stung a lot more.

This one stings a bit too, but my God, Nebraska hasn't looked this competent since at least 2012. Maybe 2010.

And don't get me wrong, there were plenty of mistakes. Most of them look correctable though.

  13. This was the "the emperor has no clothes" game for Nebraska. At the end of every dynastic run in college football there's a game like this that signals the dynasty isn't just over, but dead and gone. A game where a team just gets embarrassed and never really reaches that same level again, or at least not for a while. This was Nebraska's.

    Some others

Florida State - Finished in the top 4 of AP or Coach's poll every year from 1987-2000. In 2001, unranked UNC slaughters FSU 41-9. Other than one season, FSU doesn't finish in the top 10 again until 2012. Other than one season, finishes every season with at least four losses every year until 2012. Sometimes five or six.

USC - Finished in the top 5 every year from 2002-08 and won two national titles. (Or 1.5 depending on who you ask.) In 2009, USC goes 9-4 with a 47-20 loss to Oregon then a 55-21 loss to Stanford two weeks later. Pete Carroll goes to the NFL after the season. USC doesn't finish in the top 5 for another eight seasons. They also only have three seasons with fewer than four losses. Two were the past two seasons.

Miami - Went 46-4 from 2000-2003 with one national title and almost another against Ohio State. Miami was probably good enough to win the national title all four years. In 2005, Miami went 9-3 and lost the Peach Bowl to LSU 40-3. The Hurricanes finished every season after that with four or more losses until they went 10-3 last season.

Florida - The Gators went 48-7 from 2006-2009 and won two national titles. Florida got smoked at Alabama in 2010 (although I think this doesn't count because it's 'Bama). In November Florida lost at home to South Carolina 36-14 then at Florida State 31-7 two weeks later and finished 8-5. Since 2010, Florida has gone 7-6, 11-2, 4-8, 7-5, 10-4, 9-4 and 4-7.

I pledge to double anything up to 27.50 on the condition that the stadium is renamed in my honor

Haha. I'll do the same, but have instead have the field renamed after me.

"Welcome to Lincoln, Nebraska as the Nebraska Cornhuskers host the Purdue Boilermakers at Crazyhole Stadium on Hans Gruber Field."

  15. I think this is a huge positive. It cancelled a game, which sucks. But a cancelled game is better than a loss.

Or to get cute with language, the game was "lost." As in we can't find it because it didn't happen.

Let's make it official. Huskers pound Buffs next week 31-13.

  16. I say turn a backup offensive lineman or defensive lineman into a QB. Run the Tebow goal line play over and over.

Maybe Daishon Neal or Broc Bando. Guys who aren't in the two deep.

I'm like 50 percent serious that they should try this.
