No. Did you not see what the speed of Ohio State did to Wisconsin?

This +1000...Miami's offense has been horrible all year, any team with a defense gave them trouble or beat them.  Wisconsin's defense had enough up front and in the LB to keep them low'er' scoring.  What's wrong with recruiting speed AND power??  Suh, Wistrom, Peters etc... FYI Hornibrook played his rear end off tonight, congrats Wiscy

In 2017, giving up 20 points per game would be ranked 20th, and 24 points per game would be ranked 43rd.  I think those rankings are plenty solid enough if the offense was in the top 10-20.  I would be happy with both of those rankings.

Total Defense Rankings for the past 10 NCAAF National Champs (total offense ranking in parentheses):

*2017 - TBD - Clemson [#6, (#30)], Alabama [#2, (#19)], Georgia [#4, (#35)], Oklahoma[#57, (#1)] - side note, odds are  probably not good for OU -> Heisman winner curse AND a total d ranking of 57 yikes!!  still hope our old enemy wins it though

    2016 - Clemson - #8 (#12)

    2015 - Alabama - #3 (#45)

    2014 - Ohio State - #19 (#9)

    2013 - Florida State - #3 (#6)

    2012 - Alabama - #1 (#31)

    2011 - Alabama - #1 (#31)

    2010 - Auburn - #60 (#7)

    2009 - Alabama - #2 (#42)

    2008 - Florida - #9 (#15)

    2007 - LSU - #3 (#26)

    For fun:

    1997 - Nebraska - #5 (#1)  *Michigan was #1 in Total D that year (#44 in total offense!!!)

    1995 - Nebraska - #13 (#2)

    1994 - Nebraska - #4 (#5)

Average Total Defense ranking of the national champions for the last 10 years is: 10.9.  If you throw out 2010 Auburn (unless you have Cam Newton you can consider this an outlier) the average is 5.4.  The magic number for NC's  is in or around the top 10 in total defense.  I doubt we want to rest our laurels on a top 20-25 complacency and rely on anything less.  As the ole saying goes "offense sells tickets defense wins games"...the numbers don't lie.  Average Total Offense was 22.4.  So you can have a non-top 10 offense and still win a championship with a top ten defense, not the other way around (again, unless you have Cam Newton and you are Auburn 2010).  Let's make sure we have our priorities in order.  SF has the tools to make the offense a beast in any conference, that I am sure of.  Let's focus on defense and not sell ourselves short with a 20-25 ranked D...unless of course you are 94,95 & 97 Nebraska and are top ten-ish in both O and D and then you got no worries becaus you curb stomp just about everyone.  ;)

Not bad for a guy Frost moved to LB from Safety.....Who was buried on the depth chart until Frost and Co.....Great little side note here:

"There's not a player I've coached who practices harder than he does," says Frost. Last year, leading up to UCF's Oct. 29, 2016, game against Houston, Shaquem had fallen and broken his right hand. He arrived in Houston wearing a cast on the hand. Fearing he wouldn't play, he cut off the cast. His coaches told him he could play, but he'd have to wear a soft cast that constricted the movement of his fingers. In a 31–24 loss, Shaquem made 14 tackles. He sacked Greg Ward Jr. twice by himself and assisted on another sack. He recovered a fumble and picked off a pass that had caromed off a defensive lineman. "I've played football one-handed," he says. "I've played football with no hands."

Drumstick is a frickin legend, my money says he will be N soon in a GA position.

I feel incredibly comfortable that Frost is going to bring in an immediate plug in play RB and a JUCO QB.  This offense is about tp rebound....would be hard not to as low as it got.

Out of current backs who has the best hands?  Wilbon?

From the sound of things, he will never be the same.  Not because of injury but because it is a lingering thing that will always be an issue.  Very unfortunate if truly the case.  Our highest ceiling back on the roster IMO.

Real bummer, after going back and watching some highlights the past 2 years he would have fit nicely in SF's scheme.  Hope he recovers, if not wish him the best.

  6. Talent development can more than make up for any lack of talent we may have...I think we will begin to notice some players on the depth chart who were nobody before that start making an impact come game time.  Talent development will be key and I have a feeling that SF & Co are going to do very well at it.  This was a hallmark of TO/Tenopir/McBride etc.. and SF knows the drill.  If we can stay top 25 recruiting class (which we should) I think SF and his staff will be more than able to field B1G CCG teams year in and year out.  Occasionally make a splash in the CFP, possibly win it all.  Based on what I saw in the B1G CCG from Wiscy we will have no trouble dominating the West.  We got this...

  7. I think we can all agree that we don't know exactly what type of offense SF will put on the field but we can make an educated guess as to what it will look like based on his past body of work at UCF/Oregon.  That being said, I'm curious what you guys think of Tre Bryant recovering and how he fits in to SF's scheme?  I was impressed by the kid this year and I havn't heard much about him since the injury.

Nice hands on this TD grab:

Yep,here's your starter unless Gebbia puts some pounds on.

Exactly what I was thinking.  I didn't want to discourage the kid but Gebbia seems small and doesn't have the downfield arm that SF may need in his scheme.  Gebbia is slightly better on the run.  POB has good arm strength and serviceable legs.  I think he is a good bet to start but who knows.

That play was in 2008. Suh was a Heisman finalist in 2009. Nothing from outside of that year should be considered.

You live in Chicago and I live in Hawaii therefore I win...still think he should have gotten the Heisman, and yes this play should have counted towards his body of work in 2009, thanks for pissing on our fun time here on this thread

I found it really interesting how many other fan bases felt Suh should have won the Heisman that year, and that was the beginning of the end for the importance of that trophy. If you're bored read a few of those comments, I thought it was Nebraska fans that thought Suh got robbed.

Radical...thank you for sharing.  You know he was special when he got so much respect from everyone, even hated rival fans (see UT).

I don’t understand their cluelessness about coaching the bowl game. Most of the UCF staff is coming here... who should coach them, the water boy , Mickey Mouse?

Thats his team that he coached to get to that bowl game.

Bingo...and yes I'd work extra hours to coach UCF and take care of the transition/recruiting at UNL for 5 million+ a year.

  12. Fear not Husker fans, when your coach does stuff like this:

    http://www.espn.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/138889/ucf-coach-scott-frosts-new-role-scout-team-quarterback

all will be well.  All players are going to buy in, and follow this guy to the gates of hell and back if need be.  That includes the offensive line...which may not be so offensive next year.  Relax, our return to prominence is in the mail.  From the AD on down the program is coming back around to where it should be.  We good..

  13.

Two possible scenarios, both of which depend on which Auburn team shows up:

Scenario 1: Auburn lost the SEC CCG and doesn't care about the bowl game having squandered their chance at getting into the CFP - UCF shows up with chip on their shoulder losing coach and being disrespected so they play with fire and keep it close, maybe even winning the game.

Scenario 2: Auburn lost the SEC CCG in the same location and newly extended coach/team are fired up for payback and ending the season on a good note - UCF shows up with chip on their shoulder losing coach and being disrespected so they play with fire but Auburn came to play and destroys..parts of Milton found scattered across southern states, T Smith is in concussion protocol until 2048.

Key to this game:  Auburn's DLine vs UCF OLine

#Drumstick will get at least one sack and one interception in this game...

Don't get me wrong I hope UCF wins and ends the season undefeated but this is not USF/Memphis...Auburn is one of the big boys and has played the #1 team three times (beat UGA/Bama, lost to Clemson OOC) and won twice this year so we will see what 12-0 in AAC land means.  Good luck Knights!

  14. Bama still has a top 10 SoS with Mercer.  Auburn scheduled Clemson OOC.  When we start scheduling defending NC's in our OOC we can start asking questions about others.  We almost lost to a Sun Belt team this year and most years during TO's time the BIg 8 was filled with doormats (KSU, ISU etc..).  It is what it is.

Bama only played 8 conference games and had essentially two late season bye weeks also.  Oct. 28 off, played #16 LSU following week.  Nov. 18th played Mercer, then faced Auburn following week.

Contrast with Wisconsin who played 10 conference opponents in 10 straight weeks without a week off.

Until the SEC plays 9 conference games they should be automatically scored down.  To suggest Wisky played a weaker schedule due to opponents record or ranking, completely ignored the consequence of playing in a conference that plays 9 conference games instead of 8.  The consequence is SEC teams can buy one more win every year via their OOC scheduling.  That's important because an 8-4 team is going to be ranked higher than a 7-5 team.  Until the SEC plays 9 conference games, they shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.  Agree with your post, Wisky earned a shot on the field regardless what the perception is.

This logic fails to make sense:  the bottom feeders in the SEC are still more stout than in the B1G.  Or perhaps you belivethat Rutgers/Maryland/Illinois/Nebraska(sorry but this year we were atrocious) are  world beaters?  Top to bottom they have a stronger conference so 8 SEC games roughly equals 9 B1G games.   Id still rather play on the road at Purdue when they are having a good year than playing in the swamp when Florida is down.  When we get our crap together as a program AND as a conference top to bottom we can start complaining about other conferences.  We are frequent flyers (and this year almost losers) in the land of Sun Belts so we don't have much room to run our mouths.  Get our own house in order then we can start having expectations.  As of right now tOSU and PSU are the only teams really taking care of business in our conference.  Everyone else, including Wiscosin, is a few steps behind.

  17. After watching Wisconsin and tOSU play I'm sorry but neither of those teams beats Bama.  Bama's defense would have a field day against slower Wiscy and would shut down not-so-great-passer Barrett.  The B1G game was far more lopsided than the score leads you to believe.  Wiscy looked overmatched and the speed difference was astonishing.  I'm not buying into the tOSU bandwagon this year they did not iimpress in the CCG.  Besides, tOSU got stomped in the shoe by OU...early in the season or not that tells you something: Columbus is not an easy place to win any year.  The JT Barrett apologists seem to forget this guy has been a captain for 3 years with one of the best coaches in the game today; no excuses.  Bama loses a close game to Auburn at their house when Auburn was peaking (Auburn  has #1 SoS this year btw)...much better 'loss' than laying an egg vs Iowa and getting blown out at home by OU.  Sorry the committee got this one right tOSU had no business being in the CFP and Wiscy either.  We need to learn to let our football do the talking and stop worrying about stuff like this.  Win games and let the rankings take care of themselves...there is no cospiracy when you stomp everyone in your path (see 94,95 and 97 Neb).

Venables took some heat at OU for his defense at times. Now he’s a genius in the ACC. Everyone likes to say they don’t play D in that conference, but not enough credit is given to how good some of those offenses are as well. Over the years we’ve seen vaunted Big10 defenses like Michigan St. in the college playoff Get ripped open by good offenses

After Diaco/Banker/Cosgrove I'd give a major organ donation to have Venables on our sideline.  One can dream...
